This "victim of circumstance" excuse is pathetic. It is dehumanizing to assume that people from certain socio-economic backgrounds are powerless victims, who are incapable of making responsible decisions.

The above guest post about "circumstances" is obviously a joke. And a funny one at that! I, for one, am glad that this sociopath is off the streets. I agree with EmilyM wholeheartedly: pack up the iPod. They're the shearling coats and gold chains of the 21st century.

Sell them or give them to people as presents perhaps? But, it wouldn't surprise me if some just keep them. I see a lot of kids listening to them on the train. The music had to come from somewhere.
If you guys see any thugs on the subway shuffling their ipod music and stuff like "Arcade Fire", "Johnny Cash", "Groove Armada", and "Fleetwoood Mac" comes up it might be safe to say its from the forementioned group. But then again thats like comitting grand theft auto for a 76' gremlin. -

This always makes me wonder...I mean, your average teenager would HATE my music. Plus, I recently bought an extra power adaptor for mine so I could charge it at work, and between the plug part and the cord part (sold separately), it must've cost $50. Sooner rather than later, the iPod thief would need to recharge it. At a certain point, wouldn't it make more sense to just buy your own low-end iPod and put your own music on it? (That's a rhetorical question. I don't think teenage iPod robbers are stopping to think about the economic rationale of their actions.) -

Thank you, Jack, it's OBVIOUSLY a JOKE, riffing off of the post above declaring sympathy for the robber. Jeez.
That being said, crime *has* risen dramatically in the past few months in PH. This is the worst quarter for it. Happens every year. Watch your back, and try to always be aware, that's about all you can do. Hide the damn ipods, already! -

Actually, why can't a "thug" listen to Fleetwood Mac if it's something they happened to be into? "Thugs" watch MTV/listen to the radio just like everyone else. Maybe you shouldn't be so quick to judge a book by its cover. (That of course has nothing to do with the robbery at hand, but it's a pet peeve of mine.)

Let's say that thief sells the 20 GB iPod for $100. If you paid $100 and then spend $50 on a charger, etc., it's still cheaper than buying it brand new at a store. -

Man, those gangbangers, lowriding down the block, thumping that Air Supply out the speakers... Talk about a menace to society
Yeah, sure they probably sell them at school or whatever, but also, everyone knows at least one person that owns a computer. They probably steal an ipod and then dump all their friend's music on it. -

Nobody touches the rims and neon on my iPod.
Also, EmilyM's comments are not so far fetched. New iPods are still worth a lot. But the older 3G and even 4G models are cheap enough as new-dead-stock from Apple and tons of other stores. And the mini iPods are running about $150 from resellers all over. -

Sell them or give them to people as presents perhaps? But, it wouldn't surprise me if some just keep them. I see a lot of kids listening to them on the train. The music had to come from somewhere.
Somewhat related- I was on the shuttle yesterday, and there was a young (13? 14?) would-be thief that was beating himself up over not taking a cell phone from a younger kid. "Yo, I should have took that shit, B... he was just sittin' there, playin' games and stuff... wasn't no body else around- DAMN I should have took it!"
The friend that he was talking to was a little bigger (16? 17?) and this exchange took place while I was checking email on my phone, literally four feet across the car. I wrapped my fingers a little more securely around my phone and gave a 'try it, you little fucker' look just in case they glanced my way. I was pissed. -

I know this is the most cliche line ever, but seriously, this is why I don't have nice things.
Besides being unable to afford an iPod, I didn't want to buy one only to not be able to use it in public for fear of having it stolen. My MP3 player cost 40 bucks at Target. Also, it's bright pink chrome: most days I'm embarassed to be seen with it. If I ever get mugged, it will be for the six dollars in my wallet. :? -

Fun-Facts About iPods (and MP3 Players in General) & Muggings:

1) While the initial price is high, the cost of 30 CDs at $15 a piece is $450. If you own 100 CDs you got used or discounted at $10 a piece, then that's $1,000 right there. iPods are cheap when you realize you'll most probably pay more to begin with but it will save money after time and after you learn how MP3 creation works.
2) Some people's iPods--like mine--never leave home. It's my MP3 jukebox connected to the stereo. Not having CDs is great!
3) People often don't get mugged solely for what they have but how relatively easy the mugger thinks they can get what someone else has. You might have your iPod tucked away or not even have an iPod at all, but if you look 'ripe for the picking' you'll get attacked. Not saying you should look like you'll go all Bruce Lee on someone, but self-defense classes often teach you how to carry/present yourself so you're not an appealing target. -

Bright colors/patterns are mother nature's way of warning would-be predators- think it would work in the 'hood?!
Look like a bit of a freak and you don't get messed with?! Anybody?! -

I would find it a lot easier to take the view that this was a kid who just made a mistake if he weren't under indictment for manslaughter. The police may have fired more shots than necessary, but I won't lose sleep over it.
Running around with a pellet gun robbing people is idiotic and criminal (again, if he did it, since he hasn't even been inicted of this yet). But I hate to see people calling for the crucificition a 16 year old kid. -
