that's pretty much the way to go by subway. the only less tedious method is a car service.

I've occasionally wondered if it was better to take a bus and then walk, but haven't bothered to hopstop it . . .

That's assuming you are anywhere near the 7th Ave Q station.

The bus routes to get up there would take forever. I tried so many different ways of getting to and from there and Wburg. I used to just accept the R-N-L super dooper switcheroo but then got curious and tried taking the R to Lawrence then hopping on the 61 bus that goes up Jay St. It wasn't too bad if you're lucky with timing the train and the bus. After I started hanging in Greenpoint more I started doing the F to G and that was my favorite way to go. The G is one spotty bastard, but once it's there you're on your way nicely.

I like to take the R to Pacific and get out and walk to Fulton St. on the G. Another option is to walk from DeKalb Avenue to the Bond St. entrance of Hoyt/Schermerhorn station. Using this method (from Prospect Ave) I can usually pull off a 45 min. door to door trip.

Of course, if I see an N train (or sense that one is about to arrive), I'll just get on it and switch at Union Square.

How about the 8th Avenue bus (B69) to Lafayette Avenue, walk over to the Clinton-Washington G stop? The B69 is on a pretty tight schedule. I wouldn't do this on the way home; the thing rarely comes at night.

i sure hope G gets extended to 7th avenue

i work in east williamsburg, and im commuting from park slope. usually i take the F-G-L combination to work, that's the fastest. i either change to G at carroll or bergen on winter, or smith-9 on summer. i never really had any problem with G, it comes pretty frequent (maybe because it's rush hour), and not as crowded as F, i actually like G. it takes me about 45 mins to work, or almost an hour door to door.

There is another silver lining: The G will be extended to Church Avenue throughout the project, and one express track will be rehabilitated — potentially opening the door to a permanent F express in years to come.
