  • Do you still owe animal kind money? I take my dog there and will be taking her in for a check up this week. Could I give them some money in your name somehow? Not that they haven't made a mint off me already, but I'd love to help you out. I too am in grad school, so I know that not only is money in short supply, but time is also a precious commodity. Excellent work!
  • Thank you so much for taking this guy in! I've got a fund, www.ihearttripods.com, and could donate money to the cause. I'm currently updating my Quicken file to see how much I've got, but I'll email you as soon as I know. I'd be thrilled to help out with the costs as this shouldn't be all on you! Also, if you email me flyers, lulumomma [at] gmail [dot] com I can print some out and put some up here in Prospect Heights.
  • My dog's appointment is on Thursday. If you PM me before then, I will donate on your behalf.
  • Wow! This person deserves a medal!

I wanted to bash on Animal Kind here but that's off topic. I was thinking of starting a new topic but apparently from reading earlier topics this ground has been covered.

But why was this poor doggy out running around in the street? How sad. He's a really handsome fella!
  • You are an absolute saint!
As far as Animal Kind, yes, they were wrong and they're not my favorite vet in the area (just think they're pricier than others) but I don't know if any other vet in the area would have done any better. It's a shame...they really do make plenty of money and it wouldn't kill them to do some work pro bono in a case like this. It just makes it hard for the next kind hearted soul to bring an injured stray animal to a vet.

But to end on a good note....you are a wonderul person!
  • I really believe that a good deed comes back to you two-fold and in your case I hope three-fold. Thanks again for caring.

PS - Caseopele set up a paypal account so that others can help defray some of her vet costs in the past. I wonder if that can be done with a DH account that can be used to fund some of these rescues. I know many people donate to animal humane societies, but sometimes I would like to help the little guys who have no one.
  • How do we find the paypal account?
  • Yeah - paypal would be mad easy for things like this - I'd kick in.
  • Subject: Amazing people

Wow. I'm bowled over by all these offers to help. You're all so kind.
The dog was picked up by Ambuvet yesterday and transported to a specialist vet in the city, thanks to the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals. I'm so, so happy that happened. And as I said, the Brooklyn Animal Foster Network paid the remaining $460 in vet's fees at Animal Kind... so maybe people will remember them next time they're thinking of donating to a charity? I know I will!

As for our costs... well, I've talked to Diane (the woman who drove the car to the vet and split the bill with me) and I think we're both (a) amazed at all these generous offers, and (b) prepared if embarrassed to admit that we could really do with a hand in terms of the fees. Basically we split the total - $960 - down the middle on our credit cards. If you really, really want to help us pay that back, that would be amazing. I have a paypal account already, so if you wanted to donate there, I could make sure Diane gets half of whatever anyone cares to give. The account is registered to my email address, nicky DOT agate AT gmail DOT com.

    And thank you. Wow.
  • perfect!
    i just contributed!
    thanks so much!
  • So have I.

    Thank you!
  • Me too. Glad to help. Wish it could be more, but I'm a grad student too.

    Great job!
  • I'm contacting you all individually, but all I can say here is thank you so much. This is so unexpected, and so kind.
    Nicky.
  • I canceled my pay pal account as I kept getting spam....Please PM me
  • Flexichick wrote: I canceled my pay pal account as I kept getting spam....Please PM me
Yeah.. no paypal account for me but if the bill is not already paid in total.. PLEASE pm me and I will send you a check directly snail mail if you leave your name and address.

hey,,,, you did a good thing!

And I hope this does not go in to an Anumal Kind bash because (forget about the expense) we are blessed with a facility in the Slope that on emergency care is just one level below the Animal Meidcal Center in Manhattan and if you have ever had THAT kind of emergency with a pet you will understand how valuable the local facility is.
  • Stacey, at first I thought of setting up a paypal account but ended up having people pay the vet directly. I set it up so people could donate under the cat's name, which was under my account.

11thstreet, I know how you feel. I rescued a cat the day after Christmas of 2006 that someone just tossed out on the street. I had just moved so I had no money and since I have cats and dogs of my own I had to keep the cat locked in the bathroom. The amazing people here donated enough money to get him tested for everything and all his shots so I could let him out of the bathroom. He ended up being adopted by a customer of mine who adores him. I was overwhelmed by the compassion and kindness of virtual strangers for the sweet boy kitty. At that time I was feeling so disgusted that someone could throw one of their cats out like garbage. But I found out that there are good people in the world and we're lucky enough to have some of them here on this board.

I'm so glad this poor little guy is getting the help he needs and he has his very own fairy godmother in you!
  • Oh, and I'm pretty darn sure that in this type of situation that my vets would have worked something out. All I'm going to say is the way AK handled this doesn't make them look very good. Veets, you know I don't want to argue with you!
  • I thought I had a pay pal account, but I'm having trouble accessing it. It was set up long ago, so I've forgotten my password, and they seem to have sent it to an old email address.
PM me and I'll happily send a check via snail mail.
  • I wasn't pressuring anybody. There are plenty of other shelters in existence that do not euthanize animals. I'm sorry that I cared enough about an animal to not want it killed but didn't have enough time to do the research.

BTW-I adopted my dog a month ago from a shelter. How many would you like me to take at once?

  • Subject: doggie update

    Hi everyone,

Both Bide-a-Wee and Sean Casey were ready to step in and help, it's just that the Mayor's Alliance confirmed that they could help first, and promised that the pooch would not be handed over to any kind of terminal shelter.

I got an email from them today, by the way! He had his operation, and it went well, and now he's recovering... I'll copy & paste it below.

Thank you, again, for all your support in this. I feel like I've met some really amazing people over the last week!

Hi Nicky, he went in for surgery last night so he is recovering. He didn’t have pneumonia or anything like that so he’ll just have pure cage rest. We are going to contact some rescue groups to see if they want to take him and we’ll also put him up on the website.

    Siobhan
  • I paypalled ya!

    Peace
  • thanks for the update
    those sweet eyes haunt me
  • Any ideas on who the owner is?
  • What is the status of this dog? I would like to help. I may be willing to donate at least...
  • I just a call from someone who had seen a "lost dog" posting for a Shiba Inu / pit mix on Serius Dog Chat, but she couldn't remember who posted it or when. I've contacted the list moderator and she's going back through the archives, but in the interests of speed, did any of you see it?

He's recovering from his operation in the city, by the way! Crate rest...

  • glad to hear that he's recovering
  • Did the owner ever turn up? Any more news on his progress?
  • I saw that dog tied up outside of the Key Food on 7th and Carroll about a month ago.. I remember specifically because it was around midnight and totally freezing out, and I thought to myself 'who would leave their dog tied up outside in this sort of weather'..

The dog was wearing that plastic collar thing around its neck that it's wearing in the pic.
