10% of $150,000.00 is $15,000.00 (which is more than a person who earns minimum wage takes home annually before taxes)

I partially agree with you Captain M but police must ensure their surroundings as well as the person they are after. I have a good family friend who lost their son because he was playing with a toy gun in the stairwell of the Gowanus Houses and he was only 13.

on nice days, i see little kids on washington ave. running down the street and pretending to shoot each other with toy guns.

it seems asthough parents might buy their kids different toys, especially considering how many times the above situation as mentioned by stacey has indeed occured.

  • Subject: I'm disgusted

First of all, if you're walking around with an iPod, know you are advertising that you've got a $200-300 item in your possession. Know that you are asking to be robbed - there are a lot of people in this city - in all neighborhoods - for whom this is a significant amount of money. I'm not saying you deserve to be robbed - it's just a reality of the place you live and the conditions that others live in. And, yes, even some poor people have computers that they can sync with their iPods....

Secondly, who are you to question where this kid got his bail money. Perhaps someone in his family has money? Perhaps someone has property who put up the money? Perhaps he's got money? Don't make assumptions.

Finally, you're a cop. Either a kid brandishes what looks like a gun at you or you hear a description of a kid with a gun and you think you see that kid. Honestly, do you stop to think maybe I shouldn't shoot at this kid? Maybe he won't shoot that gun at me? Maybe I won't die in the line of duty? No, you do what you need to do for self preservation as a human being. I am thankful that they didn't kill him - but judging from the fact that they fired 22 times and hit him twice...maybe that wasn't on purpose.

One more thing - before anyone gets too up in arms about this kid - he has been accused (not convicted) of beating and killing a man for being an immigrant. Not really the character most people would want to put up as their martyr of the week...just in case he's convicted of the original crime.

Know the world you live in - it can be both dangerous and unjust. Pick your battles well.

Well, $15,000 is a lot of money, especially, as you point out, when earned at the sort of regular job that a typical 16 year old can get.

Maybe this explains why young Master Higgins was out robbing and such: to quickly earn enough money to reimburse whoever put up his bail. Perhaps that person was very insistent about being paid back in a timely manner.

Hmm, so all those people driving around in their automobiles that cost thousands shouldn't because they're advertising that they got a $1000 - $50,000 item in their possession?

    Give me a break.

You can blame society and all the envy and greed out there but in reality it comes down to the nature of the person. Either they are a criminal or they aren't.

Holy Toledo! Everyday I wear a $1500 watch, $150 shoes, $800 blazer, $1000 briefcase. Am I sending out the wrong "signals"? Maybe, I better hire a security guard to accompany me on the subway. Or maybe I should just move to the burbs where I'll be safe.

if i were hungry and couldn't get more than a minimum wage job, if I were working two jobs to feed my family and still couldn't afford to send them to the a good doctor when they were ill, if my kids hated school because the school hated them and I had no money to send them elsewhere, if I had less than I needed to survive but constantly had to walk alongside those who have much, I would rob you, Oiseau.

Ordinarily I'm quite a nice person. We all are.
  • 16! Minimum wage job. We've all been there. Big deal. That's where you start your working life, and learn how to be prompt, take direction, etc. Besides, I doubt this thief/alleged killer had any job.

The signal you're sending out is "materialistic fop".
  • For what it is worth, and it's probably not worth very much, and I have no idea why I feel compelled to admit this right now, but:

I am a 24 year old white, college educated woman with a full time professional job and I cannot afford an iPod or a digital camera or whatever. I've never thought of stealing or shoplifting one, but everytime I see someone my age or younger whipping one out, I get jealous. I get a little jealous and I think, "what the fuck? how come they have one and I don't?"

Of course, I have other possessions I can go home and comfort myself with. And I have resources to express this feeling, and I can foresee a time in my future, albeit distant, when I will be able to afford the things I want. If I didn't have these comforts, who knows how this feeling might grow and motivate me....
  • If he were a white teen most of the negative comments wouldn't even be made- despite the crime. Somehow in our society a poor black teen is 10 times more dangerous than a white teen (poor or not) who has committed the same or similar crimes. The fear that we have for things black, things poor, things outside our everyday is astonishing.

No one seems to think excessive force was used 15+7= 22 shots... come on now.

What's a fop? I looked it up on my trusty www.acronymfinder.com and my best guess is fresh off the plane but um...
  • From Merriam Websters:

2 : a man who is devoted to or vain about his appearance or dress : COXCOMB, DANDY

Oh, there I go assuming every three-lettered word is a friggin' acronym! That makes much more sense!

Has anyone been robbed at gunpoint in prospect heights or crown heights by a white guy lately? If you are looking for caucasion thieves try Enron, Worldcom, Tyco, etc...
  • I would say the force used was justified, but the marksmanship skills were not. More bullets does not equal more force. One bullet is just as deadly as 100. They think he has a gun and is going to use it, then they can use theirs.
  • Anonymous wrote: The fear that we have for things black, things poor, things outside our everyday is astonishing.

Actually my little cousin a 14yr old girl was robbed by 2 WHITE boys with knives right on Underhill and Park. The police didn't believe the description she gave them. When she said they were WHITE they ask her if she was sure. What the hell is that about? White, Black, Blue or fucking green, a criminal is a criminal and they should get treated the same way.

Two shots hit him. And the shots were fired while he was being chased.

Painting this as perhaps a new Amadou Diallo is race baiting. Diallo had no gun, and was hit 19 times out of the 44 shots fired and was not on the run. He was standing still.

Diallo was a damned misjustice and an execution. No doubt. "Wrongful death"? Beyond that. Way beyond that. Diallo was murdered by trigger happy cops.

Javaughn Higgins is a stone-cold thug who was out on bail for indictment on murder and feels he was 'innocent' enough in that case that he could simply go out mugging and threatening people with a b.b. gun that he clearly used because it looked like a real gun.

    It's as simple as that.

Sounds like a fantasy story that old ladies who gossip on front stoops share.

Do people even look at who Police officers are anymore? Not for nothing but there are tons of different races, ethnicities and genders represented in the NYPD nowadays.

Well I hear Target is investigating the theft of 2 cases of Choxie - hmmmm.

and how many of those shots came after he was down? If it took precisely 22 to bring him down and ensure that he was no longer a threat, then I don't see excessive force.

White kids robbing people?! That's unpossible!

Just to clarify: I have no doubt anyone of any race can commit a crime. Anyone of any race is capable of anything. But I do think the "...police didn't believe the description she gave them (becuase they were white)..." is the fantasy story part. It's a perfect nugget of gossip spreading the concept that police are simply racists.

No, no- it's possible... you see, while all of those nifty status symbols, like iPods and fancy cell phones, are well within the reach of all white youth, they soon become bored with the process of legal acquisition through purchasing. At that point, they tend to turn towards more radical acts just for the thrill of it. You see, they too are victims... Pity them for being born in to their socio-economic status... Pity them...
