So the room with the toilet isn't going to be the main room for the bar?? And, I guess, the main entrance will be down the driveway with the Franklin Place sign?

That could be a challenge for visibility to attract new customers.

And I hope they have a great exterminator, cause the building is crawling with cockroaches.
  • i walked by the place today and saw a guy inside. I asked him when they were opening and he said next week. I didn't get a chance to look inside the bar, but the picnic-style tables they are putting outside look really cool. It will be an awesome place to hang out when it gets warm.

    I am officially happy ':D'
  • well ,45py7x, logic dictates that the room with the toilet is probably the bathroom, not the main room :)
  • Subject: bar

If you looked at that building you would never know there was anywhere behind it that could be a bar, especially since the driveway area has been used for the dumpster and strewn garbage for the past year. Only the empty room with the toilet looked to be the only possible space for a bar, thus the conclusion that it was to be the bar area. It looked way too small for any kind of bar and, as Whatchuwant agreed, it seemed only to house a toilet.
  • One thing keeps nagging me...when they open (hopefully soon) will they already have a liquor liscence? Or just food for now?
  • it looked great last night, as did the wine bar at classon & st. johns.

couldn't get a drink to save my life at 95 south.
  • Is the wine bar on Classon and St. Johns Place open? Could you describe what you saw in greater detail, alafairnadia?

    Thanks!
  • It's not open- but they are certainly moving along (Franklin Park, especially- the tables are out and what was hiding behind the cars, trucks, and dumpsters shows a large glass wall containing the main bar part). The Wine bar (need more coffee, forgetting name...) has its sign up, along with the website (wait, Sophia's???), Argh. You can't see inside though, paper on windows.
  • abigail's, i think.

Photos! And it's not the room with the toilet :)
  • OMG! It's gorg! Here's more from that blog:

Move over, Radegast--you're not the only shiny new beer garden in Brooklyn anymore. Introducing Franklin Park (on St. John's Pl. between Franklin and Classon), the latest in a slew of new and notable bars to set up shop in BK. This one is the brainchild of Matthew Roff, co-owner of Southpaw. In an email that was forwarded to us, Roff described his latest venture (we've bolded the salient points):

Franklin Park bar & beer garden is located in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn, three blocks from the Brooklyn Museum and Brooklyn Botanic Garden ... Franklin Park was a 600 sq. ft. 3-car garage with 1400 sq. ft. of outdoor space. We converted the garage to an 800 sq ft. bar boasting 12 taps and a 1200 sq. ft. outdoor patio with multiple picnic tables and other outdoor tables and accessories. A kitchen will soon follow but for now the bar is where it's at.

We're told Franklin Park is awaiting its liquor license, but barring any unforeseen problems with that the bar will supposedly open its doors "within the next two weeks." We're also promised a photo by Friday, which we'll share as soon as it arrives.

There a comment below from someone who flips out cause they're saying its in Prospect Heights when its actually in Crown. Hilarious.
  • right? stunning. I can't fuckin' wait!
  • i'm partially excited for this, but a little worried it will be very noisy </grumpy>
  • OK- I just got back from there- still not open yet. Sigh. However I did go in, and I did get to meet the owner (co-owner- BOTH the Southpaw guy and the Soda guy are opening this)- it's coming along nicely, but they are taking their time to "do things right." Which is no good for us drunkards.
    :(
He's hoping for a very soft opening "next week, no big party," but was very vague when I tried to nail him on a day.
He ALSO said that the room with the toilet is going to be a cafe! Till then though, Park will have cheese plates and charchuterie (sp).

I say we just go their with a case of beer, sit at the picnic tables, and act like its open.
  • I heard this weekend that Toly, the guy from Soda, said the bar was opening this week at some point. we need to get confirmation! :)
  • would be nice to also know whats beers they will be serving!
hopefully one belgian if not more

I'm pretty sure that's gonna be a given. I just hope they have something other than beer. a nice cask of bubbly on tap would be beautiful. very med, though, not so beer garden-y. maybe I can beg.
  • The website is live: http://www.franklinparkbrooklyn.com

It's got some sweet pics and says:

    "Welcome to Franklin Park

"We're pleased to announce that Franklin Park will be opening on Friday, April 25 in the early evening. Please come by and say hello!

"Franklin Park is a 2000 square foot beer garden and bar located at 618 St. John's Place in Brooklyn, New York. We're a little less than three blocks away from The Brooklyn Museum and The Brooklyn Botanic Gardens. The closest subway stop is the 2/3/4/5 at Franklin Avenue. For door-to-door directions, please click here to find your best route.

"We're open weekdays from 3pm - 2am and weekends from 1pm - 2am. All guests must be 21+. Franklin Park has a full bar with a wide selection of premium liquors, a large selection of imported and domestic bottled beers as well as twelve beers on draught which will change from time time.

"Currently on draught we're serving: Coney Island Lager (brooklyn) , Kastel Rouge (belgium), Green Flash IPA (california), Schneider Weisse (germany), Raddelburger (germany), Ommegang (cooperstown, ny), Six Point Righteous (brooklyn), Blue Point Toasted Lager (long island), Original Sin , Jever (germany), O'hara Irish Stout (ireland) and Stone Pale Ale (california).

"Franklin Park is available for private parties and special events. If you're interested please contact Matt Roff.

"Thanks and we hope to see you soon!"

The beer list is rad! Even though there's no cask (more of an English pub feature anyway) I'm impressed. Solid german contingent! The Belgium beer, Kasteel Rouge, is something I've never heard of. Some vegetable beer - curious. And I've never had the O'Hara Stout or the Green Flash IPA. Ooooo I'm excited!

Looks like they weren't able to get a 4am permit. Even still, having a legit bar in the hood has been worth the wait! And I checked it out on Sunday and talked with Matt, the owner. He's doing this sucker right. Prost Freunde!
  • do you think they will have some food too? i am excited about it, but i can't drink that much beer without any food on my tummy!
  • The developer of the website and logo has this on their website:
    image

    I think that's awesome.
  • just as suspected only one belgian beer (on tap)

    still i like the selection
hoping for food options too sooner than later
vegeterian options are probably going to be too much to ask for

i also notice their website just mentions the street address and leaves out any mention of prospect or crown heights
maybe they have seen the comments on this and other sites.. hmm
always good to see a place that can learn from mistakes :D
  • The food, mentioned prior in this thread, will be cheese and charcuterie until the cafe opens. Don't know what the cafe will serve though, that's still a ways off from opening.
  • I'm happy that this establishment has chosen Crown Heights as their location. It helps bring much needed amenities to the nabe. This establishment is currently being discussed on Brownstoner. It seems that anytime this blog has any discussions regarding Crown Heights, specific bloggers brutally bash us. It infuriates me that people how know nothing about our nabe can speak so negatively. Grant it, Crown Heights is no Mulberry Street. It has crime, drugs, etc., but is it really that bad. The way these morons on the other blog speak of CH, it makes CH seem like the South Bronx of the late 70's and 80's. I live here and I don't see any of that.

They did reference Brooklynian - stating that once Franklin Park opened this blog would be posting on how people got mugged leaving there. That is so unfair. Yes...the Crown Heights forum has lots of mugging & robbery post, but so do the other forums. Does anyone have good things to say about Crown Heights as a whole? I think that if people are going to judge Crown Heights based on a forum, it's pretty sad! Crown Heights like Brooklyn has good and bad. Sorry for the rant!!!

Didn't look too bashy to me, just a negative post or two.

    Judge fer yourself here.
(Check it out, mod friendly link but NOT tinyurl!)

P.S. I _liked_ the mugging post, you left out the context!
I can see it now. Within one month of this bar's opening, the brooklynian.com board will be replete with postings about drunken hipsters being mugged as they stumble home at 2AM
    Lol @ drunken hipsters.
  • I read all the brownstoner comments, and come on, do you actually take anything commented on Brownstoner seriously? I mean really, I post there and have an account, but anyone who's got half a mind knows that it's notoriously prowled by trolls.

Either way, the comments were pretty funny. I loved the one about the old folks in CH that are too slow to catch and mug the hipsters

Hey Faithful- First I want to thank you for defending us in Brownstoner (and it looks like you made a friend in Mr Morris there  ).

F them, they suck, they're all from OHIO anyway, so yea, let them think that Park Slope is the center of the universe, we all know its becoming less and less like Brooklyn every day...and has anyone told them that they probably get mugged more often in their nabe then we do in ours? I mean, they're the ones with all the cash....
  • Thanks Whatchuwant. Mamacita, I'm an intelligent person and I understand the troll issue on Brownstoner. The point that I was trying to make was that it doesn't matter what the topic is, if CH is referenced the majority of the posts are negative, Montrose Morris and I being the exception. If you search previous threads that have anything to do with CH, most comments are negative and inflammatory. My comment on Brownstoner further establishes that I know most people that post don't know squat about Brooklyn because they only frequent certain nabes. At one time, Brownstoner was a very educational and informative blog, but as I stated on my Brownstoner post -- it's now just a watered down version.

Walked in and walked right back out. Only one beer for less then $5 - some random bottled beer for $4. Most of them were $6 or more. Definitely way more yuppie blandness than hipster hang. This is an affordable neighborhood - why can't we have a bar with modest drink prices?! Many more expensive neighborhoods have these in spades, e.g. O'Connors and Great Lakes in Park Slope, Palace Tavern in Greenpoint, Rosemary's Greenpoint Tavern, The Abbey, and Daddy's in Williamsburg, Sonny's in Red Hook, and Alibi in Ft. Greene. Furthermore, the absence of any discounts on opening night doesn't bode well for regular drink specials.
