Definitely way more yuppie blandness than hipster hang. This is an affordable neighborhood - why can't we have a bar with modest drink prices?! Many more expensive neighborhoods have these in spades, e.g. O'Connors and Great Lakes in Park Slope, Palace Tavern in Greenpoint, Rosemary's Greenpoint Tavern, The Abbey, and Daddy's in Williamsburg, Sonny's in Red Hook, and Alibi in Ft. Greene. Furthermore, the absence of any discounts on opening night doesn't bode well for regular drink specials.
Sounds like you like "Dive bars" Any decent bar nowadays has beer for 5 and 6 bucks. Stay at home with your PBR cans...
  • Had a great time. Staff was great and the vibe was chill with great tunes. Glad to see it was not a 'hipster' bar. I have to echo The King.

Feel free to enjoy the bars where they charge 3 bucks a PBR when the going rate at real dive bars go for .75.

    Congrats on the solid opening!

No- sorry, it was freaking great- if you have a problem with the prices of BEER, than you need to stay home with your cheap ass 6 pack.

Ok here we go, for the cheapo guy who is crying about beer prices, a complete loser, there is night flight at the bodega last time i checked it was 50 cents a can, buy 10 of those and its only 5 bucks and you´ll get wasted.
Anyhow , Franklin Park last night was a success and i am glad that Toli and Matt had the balls to open up a place in Crown Heights, the decor is amazing done by Local artist and Manager from from South Paw, DJ Palms did a great job with the music, staff was helpful and the ambiance was of festive mood and yes i was glad to not see the hipster wanna be´s from Vanderbilt. The beer selection is also very good different from Soda and Barrette, the Rattenburger
being one of my favorites and the Schneider Weiss was sublime. I really wish them all the luck and from the looks of it i think it will give Soda a run for its money, the garden is def 10 times better than Soda. Also Bartenders were very attentive and very fast unlike the ones at Soda where asking for a beer is like asking for mercy from a judge who is about to give you a life sentence. Will be seeing you there...

  • i hope the loudness of the music was just a one-off opening night thing and i will not be able to hear it in my apartment every single night this summer. i mean it is an unenclosed space and they should at least be respectful of their neighbors. maybe one of you who knows the owners can ask them to buy me a white noise generator or something?

i don't know why everyone is complaining about the beer prices, both the beers i bought there were $5. but hopefully it will become more of a chill hangout, less of a club. they space is definitely beautiful. they also need FOOD.

I'm afraid you're probably out of luck as far as noise level goes, I mean, it didn't seem to me that the music was at all loud, and unfortunately, you can't make people talk quietly. I also seriously doubt the owners are going to buy you a noise machine.
  • yeah, i was thinking last night how nice it was to be going out so close to home and how very glad i am that i don't live next door.

sorry about the noise, lindsay. :(

but the bar sure was nice. :D
  • i mean, fine, it was a friday night and this area usually has a lot of street noise. but if it's that loud on an average tuesday i'm not going to be very happy. i was kidding about the owners buying me a noise generator btw but i do think they should be respectful of their neighbors.

the bar was nice! there is a sign out front right now that says it is happy hour and all beers are $4. i wonder if they have bloody marys...
  • I enjoyed it quite a bit but I did feel sorry for the neighbors, though as a smoker I was pysched about the garden. It was funny, everyone was ordering pizzas (from some place called Amarina, it was excellent) because the kitchen wasn't open yet. All the staff I spoke to were incredibly nice and not snotty in the least - beats BBurg by a long shot!

Girly drinks were not cheap but I was not expecting them to be so I wasn't concerned. The Cosmo was heavy on the citrus and light on the sour mix, not the way I like it, but I've had worse. They did put a decent amount of alcohol in it, unlike so many places.

All in all I would definitely go back, too bad my house will be so far away from it.

    lame! stalker!
  • I'm definitely a fan. Expected to pay $5 for a beer, so it was nice to choose between a pretty wide selection of GOOD beer for that!

Hey Zach! Didn't see you Friday- wha' happened?
  • stopped by this afternoon for some quick drinks
the bartender who was working also works over at Soda..
he mentioned that they intend to start serving food next weekend
"Cheese plates" and a "Bistro type menu" is what I was told...

as for the price of drinks... anyone who is complaining needs a reality check
decor and feel of the place is cool as well

def even seems like a nice little place to have a singer/songwriter on a weekend in the summer.. perhaps right in front of the bar playing out towards the outdoor seating area... just my idea though..

    def will be going back
  • Oh - and I tried to go to Homage before FP, but it did not appear to exist anymore! I saw the sign but no actual restaurant that I could see. Am I insane, was it just temporarily closed or what? Anyone know?
  • hey all - can someone PM me with Toly's contact info? I have some information he requested on Friday night. thanks!
  • i think homage just closes (relatively) early -- like 9ish. we had also hoped to get food from there on friday and found it closed, but it looked open on sunday.
  • Ah, thanks ST. I'll be sure to come back earlier next time.
  • is there a website or menu listing anywhere online for Homage?

    thanks in advance
  • shut the place down last nite. lovely all around. cheese and meat plates in the near future, real food later down the line. Thanks to Franklin Park!

A friend of a friend was playing at Union Hall, so I had to go there. I thought I'd catch up with you guys at some point, but ended up staying there for a while and then wanting to check out FP.

Just a comment in defense of my earlier post related to drink prices. I agree that the beers the have are generally appropriately priced (though I've seen a lot of the $6 beers for $5 and $5 beers for $4 in tonier neighborhoods), and I like a lot of those beers. I just don't understand why in a working class neighborhood they can't at least offer the option of a Bud or PBR for $2 or $3. The existence of such a larger range of drink prices would attract a more socioeconomically diverse clientèle. Wouldn't that create a more interesting bar?

I think doing that would turn a a beer garden into a trailer park, so no, not more interesting.
Keep the PBR in Billyburg where it belongs.
  • Ok, most of us can't afford NYC living. So yeah, I'll have to vote on the side of 'whatever', BUT ONLY SLIGHTLY. A cheap Shaffer or PBR within a mix of cask ales/Belgiums is always a nice mix, especially if payday is a few weeks away. Anyways, love FP and will go there often.
  • the music has been MUCH quieter since the opening. btw, they have stone ipa about 7% abv compared to normal beers @ 5%, which makes me feel a little better about spending a $1 or $2 more per beer than usual to get drunk faster on fewer beers :D hey, it's practical.

i didn't stick around long enough to find out if they do buybacks? anyone know?
  • also they did have a sign up saying that they have happy hour during the day with $4 beers.
  • sweet!

I don't think that Bud or PBR are big sellers around here generally. Red Stripe, Heinekin or Corona maybe. But I don't see Budwiser or PBR as big beers in the hood, no matter how cheap they are.
  • still haven't gotten a chance to check this place out, although it looks great. went by just now hoping for an afternoon beer, and they were all locked up. Website says 3pm-2am everyday. Bummed.
