Let's not argue. I am not pointing fingers Flexi by any means. There are lots of people who want to help and nobody to lead yet. (It is inappropriate for someone who never met her to be that lead person). It also would be a healing thing for people who were personally affected by this tragedy to jump and start the ball rolling--sometimes people just need a nudge to take on that role. I am trying to figure out who, if anyone, is taking it on so I can help out. Let's not argue on this thread!
Well, WTGirl, it's pretty easy to say "I didn't know her.." and then point fingers at other people.
As a single woman, I simply don't want to give out my name and phone number to organize this. -
How about showing up at the next Community Board meeting folks?
-
PrayforLinda, thank you so much for posting. My heart goes out to you and your family. Your aunt was such a wonderful person and I'll miss her kindness, charm and sense of humor.

i just today came across this blog for the first time today. i feel horrible about this woman's murder, but does anyone else find this felicia sullivan's article a bit distasteful, turning a horrible crime into a self indulgent hate-fest on park slope...

I would feel the same were it an article. It isn't an article, it is a personal blog entry. It is about what she was thinking about. She links to a news article if one wants to read that aspect of it. The blog entry is about what it made her think about, which is fine for a blog.

Subject: Such a great woman
PrayforLinda, I just want to add in another voice of someone that thought the world of your Aunt. My wife and I have only lived in the area for about 2 years, but Linda was such a great lady, always quick with a compliment for the both of us. We are just horrified at the situation and want to send our condolences to your family, please tell them again how much she was loved in the community.
We'd happily pitch in for a memorial or anything in her honor; I'll keep checking back and see what can be done. -
If you live in Windsor Terrace....Go to KWTneighbors and you can hook up with a group of people who have started to work on a memorial for Linda.
-
WTG, do you have a link to that discussion? Thanks.

I'm not the girl in question, but here is a link to that group:

Thank you, daver.

PrayforLinda - Thanks for posting. Your aunt was wonderful to me and my wife. She was a very special person, we will miss her.

Good news for part of a memorial tribute-- the city will pay for a memorial tree! They will put a pit in on the 10 Av side of the building and be planting an Eastern Redbud, Cercis Canadensis (a flowering tree). The tree should be planted some time next week. I am happy things could work out.

I just met her two sons - they are standing in front of the store.
In addition to the meeting tomorrow which is actually from 5-7pm (not 6:30) according to the memo I have from deBlasio's office, there will also be a service in front of the store on Thursday night (not sure of the time).
The sons will be at both.
I also pointed them to this site so they could see how many people are interested and cared about their mother.
(and now I'll go erase some of my curse words.....oops) -
I called CB7 today and was given a 6:30 start time , I would recommend calling them tomorrow to verify the correct time.
-
Good idea. Her sons gave me a printout from deBlasio's office and it said 5-7. I'm going to see if I can get some circulated tomorrow
-
Seems like Jamal Winter has a histrory of crime:

This is just so aweful - this woman was such a pleasure and one of the few shopkeepers left that made you miss all the old mom and pop shops that we grew up with. She always had a smile and always remembered me (despite my very infrequent visits). She will be very missed.

You're right the meeting is at 5to7 tomorrow night at PS154 . for some reason I thought the discussion was about the CB7 meeting tomorrow which is at 6:30, sorry thought -
No worries. I have the flier . I will try to photo copy it and see if some of the local stores will post it. One of her sons gave it to me and I told him I'd try notifying some people. I also told him that there have been other crimes on PPW and that there are a lot of people concerned about what seems to be an increase in crime

Here's an unpleasant new piece of information (or old one, of someone already posted it...)
In one of those technicalities you only expect to hear about on Law and Order, a judge screwed up, forgetting to mention that parole was part of the sentence that landed Winter in jail for a crime he committed in 2002. He was automatically placed on parole after serving 5 years, but the judge hadn't told him that parole was part of his sentence. In June 2007, he was incarcerated for violating parole by committing a robbery similar to the one that landed him in jail the first time, but he had to be let out of jail and was able to make the $10,000 bail set for the second crime - which, because of the judge's error, no longer counted as a parole violation entailing automatic incarceration till trial. That's why he was out the day he committed the murder.
Here's the story from the Daily News: http://www.nydailynews.com/news/ny_crime/2008/05/21/2008-05-21_loophole_let_thug_in_brooklyn_slay_go_fr-2.html -
another fine example of our legal system in (in)action
-
so is this just a completely random thing? I'm wondering why he focused on Linda as opposed to any other shop owner.
-
According to everything I've heard and read, it seems to have been just a random thing.
Linda often opened and closed her store alone and the store is on a quiet street and near the park. I'd imagine that it wouldn't take much to scope it out and do something like this when nobody was on the street and even make a quick escape into the park if necessary. -
So here's a case if you see something say something, but then I don't know what good it does. I remember when we first moved to the neighbor hood there was a rash of car window smashings. When I called the community relations desk at the precinct to ask what I could do to avoid this it was like they didn't give a flying, well, hoot
-
Ok, who went (besides me and BrooklynJack)?
Pretty good turn out, but as usual there are some people who ramble on about things that are either irrelevant or not truly a police issue. -
I was there.
