Bed-Stuy living — Brooklynian

Bed-Stuy living

Good eve. I'm a recent law school grad who'll be working in ny this summer at a firm in battery park. I looking to live in bk but don't want to pay out the nose and i'd like stay in a neighborhood with both a neighborhood feel and a lot of culture.

i lived in park slope last summer and it was a little too young couple for me. i've heard mixed things about bed-stuy. some say it's fine, others say it's too hood. I'm not too worried about that, I'm from CO but i've lived all over and think for the most part, i can handle myself cool.

What's the scoop on bed-stuy? pros, cons? particular parts that are cool, particular parts that are not?

any help is appreciated.

  • I just brought a house in Bedford Stuyvesant so I have invested everything I own in this area. I also lived in Park Slope but for 5 years. I not a fan of the whole area. I the area where I am in the south of the neighborhood. Bedford Stuyvesant between Madison and Fulton bounded by Malcolm X and Bedford Ave is the area of the neighborhood that I really like. The area is very block by block. I like MacDonough, Halsey, Macon, Decatur, Bainbridge, Stuyvesant Arlington, Verona, Putnam, Jefferson and Hancock Streets. Some of those streets I like more than others. I like Putman closer to Stuyvesant and I like Macon and Halsey closer to Bedford. You really have to walk the area and get a feel for what you like...

  • Welcome howard, there have been quite a few excellent posts over the past year or two discussing various subsections of that giant neighborhood known as Bed-Stuy.

    Look back and enjoy!

  • I live on Hancock b/x Marcus Garvery & Throop (pronuonced Troop) and I love my street. It's quite, beautiful, and extremely diverse. We also have a private garden and it's a nice additional to the neighborhood.

    Good luck with your move.

    Hi Howard,

I've been living in the North-West part of BedStuy (several blocks from the Bedford-Nostrand G stop) for more than six months. I like the G train in spite of its reputation because I can take it either North to switch to the L train or South to switch to the A/C lines.

Pros: The architecture, the light in a sunny day dressing the brownstones in a golden cloth, the tree lines, the Thompkins park, YMCA, Tiny Cup cafe, Le Toukouleur restaurant, the HomeDepot, the Keyfood supermarket and above all the very nice neighbors who has been helping us integrate in the neighborhood.

Cons: The unfriendly neighbors who apparently are not happy to see newcomers. Where I used to live, people were indifferent, meaning they will not say hello to you or even pay attention to you. But at least they were not giving us nasty looks. Here some people are truly super nice, some others are truly super unfriendly. You choose your battle. I would say that overall the nice people make it worth it.
Another cons would be the lack of stores. However I am very confident that it will change.

    Hope this helps.
Welcome to the neighborhood if you decide to move in.

...You know, being estatic that you "haven't seen a white person" is to my mind the very opposite of "being normal and irie". Haile Selassie I himself condemned this kind of racism before the UN.

Are you living in Bed-Stuy or Babylon?

how many times I gotta tell you only white people can be racist and yes I am ECSTATIC.

    all Amerikkka is Babylon

your incessant whitey defending only makes our case even stronger. why can't you just relax and enjoy life? not everyone is going to like you in this world just like not everyone is going to like me. deal with it tis a part of life.

if I ran around tripping over every person who doesn't smile at me or gives me a screwface or sucks their teeth I would be a pretty stressed out and miserable person.

....Again, that's not what Selassie said. In fact, that's the OPPOSITE of what Selassie said. Are you sure you really know Rasta, or are you just pretending?

...I'm not the one who gets fed up if someone from a different race is in my neighborhood. I'm not the one who's angry if they see someone from another race. I'm not the one who went out of their way to find a place to live where everyone looked exactly the same. I'm fine living anywhere and with anyone. It sounds like you AREN'T.

Which is the person who REALLY needs to learn how to relax?

    1) Selassie was a pretty horrible dictator. Ask anyone from Eritrea. You never cease to amuse me. Nice try but you fail again.

    2) There is a difference between some people of different races and a hostile takeover of a neighborhood which is what happened to Fort Greene. The few white folks who were there before were mad cool and were a part of the community and blended in. These new ones walk around like they own it and make everyone else feel very unwelcome and I am by no means the only one who says it. GET IT NOW?

    3) As for my move I went where I could get the space I want for a decent price and feel happy relaxed and comfortable. I the new kid on the block now and I most def am not trying to impose my way of life on anyone nor interfere with theirs nor am I walking around looking down upon people. I just chilling making friends not enemies. If the Fort Greene new whiteys would have behaved like that people wouldn't have the level of animosity towards them that they have now.

good riddance to you for moving out of our neighborhood. we don't want haters like you in our hood anyhow. how narrow minded are you that you moved to a neighborhood and can say that you have only been there 6 days and the best thing is that you have not seen a white person yet. Moron. you know there are white people in bed sty..............maybe not in the project you moved into...................just saying..................

Bet you I live in a nicer apt than you and it most certainly is not in the projects. Haha I in a beautiful exquisitely renovated landmark brownstone garden apt with a huge yard. You and your arrogant ignorance are a classic example of the hostile takeover people. You stay amongst your people and get ripped off on rent, mediocre restaurants and all the rest. Yes I am OVERJOYED not to have to pass you on the road. As for the few whites in Bed Stuy they behave themselves and have humility unlike you. Karma a real mofo. I wish you the best of luck WD.

    * Selassie is also the founder of Rastafarianism. So if you denounce him but drop the "irie" and "Babylon" talk, then I guess that you're just a poser.

    * Do you know what race I am?

    * I moved to Ft. Greene for precisely the same reason. Do you know how I behave in the neighborhood? Are you even interested in finding out, or have you already made up your mind about me? If you have -- what have you based your opinion of me upon? Do you think that that's enough to form an accurate opinion?

I only need to see how you behave on this forum and do not wish to see any more. That is what my opinion is formed from and you are someone I wish to never meet nor see. Look bitch don't tell me how to speak. I can say irie and babylon all i want and it doesn't have a damn thing to do with selassie. Also you are very ignorant as the founder of Rastafari is Robert Athyli Rogers who wrote the Holy Piby aka the black mans bible. Get over yourself. You know nothing and think you know everything. Typical.

    Learn something first :

The Holy Piby And Other Important Books In Rastafari Theology
The Holy Piby is probably the most important book in Rastafarian Theology. Other books that are important for Rasta Theology are the "King James's Bible" ; "The Royal Parchment Scroll Of Black Supremacy", "The Promised Key" and the "Kebra Negast". Below are brief descriptions of all these books.

    The Holy Piby
The Holy Piby, published in 1924 (Newark, New Jersey), is an occult bible which was allegedly translated from "Amharic". The Piby emphasizes the destruction of white "Babylon" and the return of the Black Israelites to Africa which is the true Zion. It is also known as the "Black Man's Bible". It was quickly adopted by Rastafarians as one of their foundation books for Theological references in the sect.

One Chapter of the book also pays tribute to Marcus Garvey who was one of the most prominent black men fighting for civil rights during the time of publication.

The "Holy Piby" was complied 1913-1917 by its author Robert Athlyi Rogers (Shepherd Robert Athlyi Rogers), who was born in Anguilla. He committed suicide on 24th August 1931. Many Rastafarians say he "took himself away from this life" versus saying he committed suicide when referring to his death.

Below is an excerpt from the Holy Piby Chapter 2.

"Holy Piby Chapter 2 page 23 First Paragraph -"And it came to pass that God gave his name Elijah, and he called upon the name of the Lord God even though he himself was God. Now when the time had appeared for God to return, the supreme angel commanded the chariot of heaven to meet him. And when the chariot appeared unto Elijah, he ascended and returned to his throne in heaven where he reigned from the beginning and shall unto the end, King of kings and God of gods."

Okay, I'll admit I was incorrect about the details of Selassie's involvement with Rastafarianism. But irie and babylon do have something to do with Selassie -- because Rastafarians regard Selassie as the Messiah.

    But that's okay -- a dilettante wouldn't know that.

Go back to Haiti you uneducated racist moron.

Now there's an idiot you don't see everyday. I lived all over the world including Haiti and there is no proof this person is from Haiti based on their comments. As a matter of fact based on the terminology I would say s/he is from the US Virgin Islands, Bahamas or Antigua.

Secondly, it's funny how you associate Haiti with uneducated and racist. Haiti has beaten the USA in Math and Science scores for junior high school and high school age children for almost 20 years!

. . . . and of course if you think this person is racist ... what does your statement make you?
  • While I would be loath to ever defend this country's math and science record, citing Haiti as an example of successful education is a bit much. Even if the statistic you cite is correct, what percentage of the school age population attends high school? And of that how many take the test?
