  • I hope you didn't bother him.
  • My feeling is: if they’re actually doing anything to you, then call the police. But if you just can’t take seeing them on the same street as you, then move.

I don’t "know" for sure they‘ve been here longer than you, but it's a safe assumption. Most of them have lived around here their whole life. I remember they were here in the 80's & early-mid 90's, and nobody seemed to really mind. It was after the late 90's, when this neighborhood got super-gentrified, that I started hearing the new people say “I want Farrell’s gone, I want the homeless bums gone, I want this and that changed in the neighborhood.” So judging it by your attitude I think it’s safe to assume when you came here.
  • I'm moved here before the 90's

The reason no one bothered with the homeless of the 80's who hung out on PPW between 12th to 14th was they were very low key and kept to themselves, they didn't, urinate or defecate in full view of families, hassle people for change , go into ranting rages and throw bottles at each other as the current group does.

Gentrification was not the reason people wanted Farrell's closed, [which I did not agree with] it had more to do with groups of drunks with containers of beer blocking the avenue and bellowing every obscenity you could think of and totally ignoring people trying to pass by .

There was also the rumors of cocaine selling and use in the mens room.

Fortunately that unruly crowd no longer patronizes the bar and I havn't heard anyone complaining about Farrell's.

As far as moving , why would anyone move from a neighborhood that is on the upswing.

lol, wow, now I KNOW you have no clue what you are talking about.
  • Lets hear your version, if you have one..

"the current group" are the same people who were here in the 80s. And I've never seen any off them do anything you described.
  • The group I mentioned from the early 80's are long gone , the current group i'm speaking about are Sweat his wife/girlfriend, the armory girls and the crowd they attract.
As far as not seeing anything I described, consider your self fortunate.

The way I look at it, I like them there because 1) I know them (namely Sweat), and they are not the pariahs you are trying to make them out to be on this board; and 2) they keep people like you occupied and away from me.

Let's not kid ourselves and pretend for a minute that if the bums and 'offensive bus stop advertisements' were to somehow disappear overnight, you would hang up your badge and stop your crusade. I've dealt with your kind my entire life, and not just in Brooklyn. We all know very well that you and your block association gestapo would just search for the next thing to harass people about.
  • Sounds like someone forgot to take their Prozac
  • We need Giuliani back to clean up these quality of life issues sneaking back into the city. Subways, especially 7th ave & 9th st are filthy with homeless garbage. You can't walk down 7th ave without getting approached a half dozen times by panhandlers. What next, prostitutes on 7th? Graffitti on homes, mailboxes are more prominent.

Murders are up over 7% since last year, rapes are up 6.2%. Bloomberg, who can't even get Ground Zero started, could care less. He's more interested in taking away trans fat from our diets or giving out free condoms. He was handed a successful City and has been letting it go to pot.

As Giuliani said, start with the smaller gateway crimes before they get out of hand.
  • yeah, like Giuliani did that all by himself or even came up with the ideas.
  • i'm no giuliani fan, but regardless of how it happened it did indeed happen when he was in office.

    Care to elaborate?
  • I was on 7th ave this morning and ran into a neighbor who is totally pissed off at the 72nd Pct.
She said her 17 year old daughter was walking past the new co-ops on 16th st above 7th ave and was harassed by a hulking individual who started spewing obscene suggestions at her , she said ,who do you think you are talking to his response was F--K you , you white C---t.
Her mother called the cops ,who showed up at the co-op and addressed the Jerk who it turns out works there and he said he was sorry and didn't mean anything.

The cops left without filling out a report or checking to see if this dirt bag has any outstanding warrants.

This stunned the mother who later found out he recently grabbed a 14 year old by the arm and has been harassing other young girls in the neighborhood.

I advised her to go to the 72nd pct speak with the Captain and file a complaint before someone gets assaulted by this lowlife.

I guess under reporting results in higher pay.
  • aren't those the coops that destroyed several buildings next door? i'm sure the owner cares a lot about the nabe
  • I think your referring to the co-op on 15th st that cracked the foundation of 1408-8th ave, which forced a neighborhood heroin dealer to move to Sunset Park to ply his trade.
  • no, i know exactly which building that is on 15th, and watched it destroy everything around it.

the coops on 16th left several houses in their wake.

    Two words.

BILL BRATTON. Google is your friend.

Yeah, and then he fired the guy responsible when he started getting credit for it.

God, I hate the cops, except for the ones that I know personally. Why are they such jerks?

From what I can tell based on the account above, the 'scary man' did not actually break any laws.

Should the cops simply make some laws up to charge him with?

Actually, I'm pretty sure you can't do this:
...who started spewing obscene suggestions at her , she said ,who do you think you are talking to his response was F--K you , you white C---t.
    to a minor.

Actually, you can't do it to an adult either. If nothing else, it is harassment.

    Check it:
Hallowell, 24, said in a lawsuit filed yesterday that he spent 30 hours in jail on a bogus harassment rap - a charge levied by his ex-boss, the librarian at the prestigious Riverdale Country School, who received the e-mail.

"I want your sweet body against my skin!" the e-mail read. "We could do it . . . in the library?? I could spank you with a vintage of finigans wake (sic)."

William Hallowell said cops banged on the door of his Riverdale apartment on April 25, 2007.

"They took me out in handcuffs. It was an embarrassing spectacle," said Hallowell, who was in custody for 30 hours. It took three months before the DA's Office dropped all charges.
NY Post - E-MAULED BY E-MAIL HOAX JERK

Dude spent 30 hours in jail for a lot less than what is described here.

I'll elaborate. The credit should probably be equally shared between James Q. Wilson, who wrote an article in the early 1980s about how broken windows, if left unfixed, will eventually bring a whole neighborhood down, and Bill Bratton who first implemented the strategy to address quality of life and minor crimes in the subways to bring crime down. Bratton has actually cited the article as providing the inspiration for his strategies. Giuliani happened to be Mayor when Bratton's policies were being implemented city-wide, but he should get no credit for the ideas. Filmlover is right, the only "credit" Rudy should get is that he held his over-inflated ego in check long enough for Bratton's ideas to gain traction before he fired him.

Um, Bratton was appointed Commissioner of the NYPD by Giuliani. He was commissioner for 2 years. He's now working in LA. Giuliani cleaned up this city,
