Eastern Parkway - Labor Day Weekend

Enforement at other large gatherings is made difficult by the participants being confrontational and, well, violent. They all want to fight at the "WIDP" instead of admitting that they are in the wrong. These enforcement attempts turn into near riots and thus "not worth it". The drunk guy on St. Patrick's Day will just take his summons and go on his way (or get dragged home by his friends).
That is an interesting theory, and I think may I actually buy it in part, but not all. But I will certainly think on it and contemplate a bit further. So, uh, thanks.

as someone who used to work in midtown (52nd & 6th) aka prime location for people pre and post st. patty's day parade, that was a day that I often tried to work from home, work late enough to get a car home and, if I were in the building for work, not fucking leave it. it is a pit of drunken frat boys and sorry, I know how they act: they like to grab, force, beat, barf, and scream. the WI parade does have violent acts associated with it, but I DEFINITELY feel personally safer there than I ever did anywhere near the st. patty's day parade. that's all I gots to say.

Are we talking about the actual parade and parade route or the "festivities" that occur on that day? I'm talking specifically about the West Indian Parade and actual route and how it compares to other parades and parade routes in this city. I could also add events that occur near the West Indian Parade or as a result of; such as the rape of a 15 year old girl in the hallway of a large apt. building on St. Johns last year during the parade.

ah jesus. I didn't know about that rape. that's horrible.
I guess I'm talking about how I feel about the surroundings because I NEVER go to the st. patty's day parade - I give a crap (okay, so maybe someone on my mom's side is irish like a million years ago but really - they moved to argentina and my dad is cuban and I self-ID as hispanic, despite the pale-face) about that parade while the WI parade, though I realize does no rep cuban culture, has a certain element of hispanics involved that make me feel welcome. oh. and there are rum drinks. but I didn't just say that.
in any case, I've felt far more threatened on washington avenue in other circumstances than I have during the WI parade, while I used to feel threatened WALKING to work at 9:30 a.m. the day of st. patty's from the rock ctr train station. I think I have a lot of street smarts and instinct. I know when I should be scared, aware or chill. it's really not fun to feel scared in the middle of midtown, with cops everywhere, and not feel scared with a bunch of drunk/stoned dudes wandering your nabe mid-afternoon labor day.
but yes, my 'evidence' is anecdotal. I merely have 5 years on this detail. -
Having lived on Eastern Parkway for 10 years now (wow), I can say that Saturday and Sunday generally aren't that different than any other summer weekend, car-wise. But you will absolutely want to get your car off the street by midnight-ish Sunday night and don't even THINK of parking in or near Prospect/Crown Heights on Monday.
Also, if you plan to be in your apartment on Monday during the parade, buy earplugs. You will want them by about 3pm.
Howdy, Stranger!
