Recommendations On Finding a 1br Apt in Park Slope

Seriously. There is no hidden gem to park slope real estate.

My wife and I actually found our broker-free, relatively inexpensive 1 bedroom on www.rdny.com. It's a subscription based service, so I was obviously skeptical at first, but they let me try the service for free for a few weeks and I was sold. We probably got lucky, but we found our place within a day of signing up for the service. Nice thing is, they put you directly in touch with landlords and owners, so no brokers. We paid $200, which is a steal compared with the 12% annual rent we would've handed over to a broker. I doubt everyone's experience is as positive as mine, but I would recommend checking it out as an alternative to Craigslist.

Like I said... Not everyone's experience was as positive as mine. Seems like the best way to find an apartment here is a fortuitous combination of patience and luck. Just try to use every resource at your disposal. I wasn't having luck on Craigslist, so I tried rdny and just happened to find a very cool building owner with a very cool building. This is -- I'm certain -- not the norm, but it worked for me. And if you're completely against trying them out again, looks like constant Craigslisting is in your future. But, it's my understanding that most apartments in PS are shown by brokers, and that may ultimately be your best bet, I'm sad to say.

There is much more than "some" shadiness involved with these guys. A number of their agents will list for no fee on craigslist these amazing places, only to "just" rent them (one time, they "rented" the unit 20 minutes after posting to craigslist). It's one huge lie. I would never, ever, go with an org. that lies. anyhow, I agree that craigslist, checking every day, and fighting your way through the scammers and fake ads (like Rapid does)... you'll find a place.

I used Steven Sommers at 353 7th Ave (718-965-1155) to find a place. He seemed like a genuinely nice guy. He has some listings in the area in his front window so it is at least worth walking by.

Stay away from Destination Real Estate. The guy there refused to show me the apartment I called about and then basically kidnapped me and drove me all around Brooklyn while he looked at new apartments that *he* wanted to see... he even kicked me out of the apartments to take pictures and left me alone for 15 minutes at a time while he went off and talked to the managers himself.
