Recommendations On Finding a 1br Apt in Park Slope

Hi all,

My girlfriend and I will have to move into a new apartment by October 1st. We're looking for a 1 br somewhere in the slope under 2k. Does anyone have any info on brokers or know of any apartments opening up in their area? If it is a nice place I'd evn try to jump in by 9/1.

Any help would be great!

Thanks,
-Pete

  • i know this guy craig who has a list for these types of things.
  • I was hoping someone with less brokers...
  • craigslist. reload all day. email EVERYONE.

Seriously. There is no hidden gem to park slope real estate.
  • My wife and I actually found our broker-free, relatively inexpensive 1 bedroom on www.rdny.com. It's a subscription based service, so I was obviously skeptical at first, but they let me try the service for free for a few weeks and I was sold. We probably got lucky, but we found our place within a day of signing up for the service. Nice thing is, they put you directly in touch with landlords and owners, so no brokers. We paid $200, which is a steal compared with the 12% annual rent we would've handed over to a broker. I doubt everyone's experience is as positive as mine, but I would recommend checking it out as an alternative to Craigslist.

Hope this helps and good luck!
  • www.rdny.com was a waste of my time last year. I wouldnt recommend them to anyone.
  • Like I said... Not everyone's experience was as positive as mine. Seems like the best way to find an apartment here is a fortuitous combination of patience and luck. Just try to use every resource at your disposal. I wasn't having luck on Craigslist, so I tried rdny and just happened to find a very cool building owner with a very cool building. This is -- I'm certain -- not the norm, but it worked for me. And if you're completely against trying them out again, looks like constant Craigslisting is in your future. But, it's my understanding that most apartments in PS are shown by brokers, and that may ultimately be your best bet, I'm sad to say.
  • I'd recommend using Rapid Realty on 4th Ave. I've found two great no-fee apartments through them in the last 5 years. There is some shadiness involved with this place, but if you give them time they'll find you a good apartment. It's worth a shot. Tell them your budget and tell them you want to pay no fee and they'll find you something. Be prepared for them to push you to take the first apartment you see! Be firm, tell them no and have them keep showing you places. They have apartments throughout Brooklyn as well.

There is much more than "some" shadiness involved with these guys. A number of their agents will list for no fee on craigslist these amazing places, only to "just" rent them (one time, they "rented" the unit 20 minutes after posting to craigslist). It's one huge lie. I would never, ever, go with an org. that lies. anyhow, I agree that craigslist, checking every day, and fighting your way through the scammers and fake ads (like Rapid does)... you'll find a place.
  • Call marvin stein, 718-768-1001. He's how i got my place and how my friend got hers.
  • I used Steven Sommers at 353 7th Ave (718-965-1155) to find a place. He seemed like a genuinely nice guy. He has some listings in the area in his front window so it is at least worth walking by.

Stay away from Destination Real Estate. The guy there refused to show me the apartment I called about and then basically kidnapped me and drove me all around Brooklyn while he looked at new apartments that *he* wanted to see... he even kicked me out of the apartments to take pictures and left me alone for 15 minutes at a time while he went off and talked to the managers himself.
  • Steve Somers! Wow! he's my favorite WFAN talk dude. So cool!
