we have been thinking of adopting a dog, preferably small furry one since we live in an apartment. what kind of dog to start looking at? maybe one that is easy to train, and we are first timers.

Don't necessarily restrict yourself to a small dog because you live in an apartment. Some of those big dogs are really lazy and just lie around all day. Amazingly, the racing greyhound does not need that much exercise, gofigur.

shih tzus!!!
they are easily trained, incredibly smart, adorable, hilarious and have more personality than most people...

of course, i'm incredibly bias (see photo)

There are lots of wonderful, already trained dogs available for adoption. The shelter staff will be able to give you an idea of their energy level and exercise needs.

KhuntienNang - you should meet Ella she is a great apartment dog - no separation anxiety, 100% house broken and loves to just hang out. She is the perfect dog for a newbie.

ooh, i was just a first-timer too. i did a ton of research and got a havanese, who i LOVE! he's perfect. (look at his little face!) havs are closely related to bichons, easy to train, companion dogs, 10-20 lbs, hypoallergenic, and adorable. and they don't have "little dog" personalities - lots of "big dog" people have told me that havs are the only little ones they like because they act like dogs. (only smaller.)

I have a min pin and he is the cutest! most definitely at home in an apartment, but also have that big personality, small dog thing going for them.
