Try this Australian website http://www.petnet.com.au/selectapet.asp?at=43
You enter information about your lifestyle and it comes up with a list of breeds.
Don't necessarily restrict yourself to a small dog because you live in an apartment. Some of those big dogs are really lazy and just lie around all day. Amazingly, the racing greyhound does not need that much exercise, gofigur. -
This dog sounds like she may make a great match for you - especially with the free dog walking.

I hope you find a great pet to bring into your family -
shih tzus!!!
they are easily trained, incredibly smart, adorable, hilarious and have more personality than most people...
of course, i'm incredibly bias (see photo) -
There are lots of wonderful, already trained dogs available for adoption. The shelter staff will be able to give you an idea of their energy level and exercise needs.
(I hope Ella finds a wonderful home!) -
i agree! adopt a shelter pup if you can!

Thank you Stacey:)
KhuntienNang - you should meet Ella she is a great apartment dog - no separation anxiety, 100% house broken and loves to just hang out. She is the perfect dog for a newbie. -
Oh, Ella is so cute...maybe you should at least meet her?

ooh, i was just a first-timer too. i did a ton of research and got a havanese, who i LOVE! he's perfect. (look at his little face!) havs are closely related to bichons, easy to train, companion dogs, 10-20 lbs, hypoallergenic, and adorable. and they don't have "little dog" personalities - lots of "big dog" people have told me that havs are the only little ones they like because they act like dogs. (only smaller.)

I have a min pin and he is the cutest! most definitely at home in an apartment, but also have that big personality, small dog thing going for them.
Miniature Pinscher
A proud, vigorous, hardy, spirited little dog, the Miniature Pinscher is frequently called "King of the Toys". Originating in Germany where it was known as the Reh Pinscher because of its resemblance to small red deer it is important to note that the Miniature Pinscher is not a miniaturised Dobermann.
The "Min Pin's" loving nature, loyalty and intelligence make it a favourite with both adults and gentle children. Bold and flashy with a tendency to show off, the "Min Pin's" distinctive hackney gait gives it a style few breeds can rival.
Bright, attentive and trainable the Miniature Pinscher often out performs far larger breeds in the obedience ring.
The Miniature Pinscher's sleek black, blue, chocolate or red coat sheds minimally and requires little grooming. "Min Pins" are ideal for flat dwellers and may obtain sufficient exercise in a very small space. They have a low tolerance to cold therefor it is necessary to provide warm housing for this breed.
