Apartment break in - 7th ave and 9th Street — Brooklynian

Apartment break in - 7th ave and 9th Street

drunken revival
edited November -1 in Park Slope
They came in using the fire escape via an open window. The window should have been closed and locked, but it wasn't.

I say "they" however it could have been one person. What I can say is "they" didn't take much - just and old laptop and about $25 in change.

Anyway, just wanted to give people a heads up as these crimes sometimes go in streaks and often coincide with school holidays.

  • Thanks for the head up. it happened to 2 of my friends in the same why it happened to you. They went through the fire escape.

Everyone should get rental insurance. Its about $100 per year and worth every penny.
  • $100 per year? I'd check your policy because you're deductible must be like 10K. I pay about $800 a year with Allstate and they were the cheapest I could find.
  • $800/yr for how much coverage?
  • My last policy premium was $225 a year for $30K coverage on contents and $50K liability. The deductible was $500.
  • OK...just dug out my policy (instead of actually working at my job).

    I pay $533 a year.
Allstate pays for living expenses up to a year
    My deductible is $250
They will pay $38,000 for replacement of property
    $100,000 for Liability

It all sounds good but I'm not too curious to find out if they actually will do what they promise.

But I see they won't cover anything damaged in an insurrection or revolution.

It's a shame your fire escape was not unscrewed, but then I guess you or your landlord would have to pay for the robbers' injuries.
  • Has anyone ever had any experience trying to get one of these companies acutally pay out on a rental policy?

Allstate. They quickly gave me a check for about $3500 and I had only been on the plan for 4 months. I'm a huge rental insurance advocate now.

you might want to shop around a bit. i know i get far more for far less from USAA--granted they are cheaper than most, but this is for homeowners. it's in the $685 range per year, 500 deductable, 36k on possessions, 14k on loss of use
  • I'm a minimalist. I keep my cash in the bank, valuables in a safe deposit box... My room is big, my floor is bare, shelves, both literal and metaphorical, uncluttered.

I live in luxury yet doubt I have much more than the deductible sitting around my apartment... no TV, couches, fancy furniture, electronics (save a highly depreciated $1000 laptop), stamp collections,... I suppose I do have a wardrobe to be concerned about, however, a fire that destroys it all would only be viewed as a blessing barely disguised.

I'm happy for those that pay $500 + dollars for piece of mind, however, my decidedly under-consumptive lifestyle in the material goods arena precludes me from such costly paper work.
  • I used Esurance for my renter's - I have my car through them as well - and it was about 290.00 for the year, $250 deductible, 30K on contents and 50K liability.

You have metaphorical shelves? I need some of those...

Sorry about the break-in. It may not be worth much, but the loss of a computer is such a pain in the ass. Hope you didn't have any irreplaceable stuff on it--like metaphorical photos or illusions of grandeur. ;)
  • Thanks caahyoko... I actually keep my illusions of grandeur safely tucked in my back pocket.

As for those shelves.. I'm selling a few on craiglist:

  • After reading this thread, I got on the phone with Geico. They gave me $50,000 for property; $100,000 in liability (in case my two kitties attack anyone) and $500 deductable for $422 a year. That's seems like a really good price and seems really worth it.
  • How did you decide which company to go with? My roommate and I want to get renter's. I think we can get it together, or just say all the crap is mine, right?
  • Ok, but if it you don't own the place and are just renting is it really worth it?

Using the above math you'd have to claim $922 the first year to payoff.

$1,344 the second (I'm simply adding the yearly fee assuming it stays constant)
    $2,188 the forth
    $3,876 the seventh year

    Plus the deductible...

It isn't worth it for me.. then again, I'm a minimalist with only illusions of grandeur.
  • And I have a LOT of crap. Expensive crap.

Scarlett: I chose Geico because I have car insurance with them.
  • DR: I didn't get insurance to protect against a break-in, although I suppose it depends on what they take, but rather to protect against a catastrophic event - mainly a fire that destroys your apartment and all of your belongings. I have enough stuff (guitars, piano, etc.) that it's really worth it to me.

I'm interested, but I can only pay you in self-effacing commentary. I have a lot on hand, and I need to clear some out of my metaphorical pantry. I think I can send it through Paypal.
  • huh...i'm on 9th Street btwn 7th and 8th. Was this on 7th Ave or 9th Street?
We don't have a fire escape but still, scary stuff.

We have Renters Insurance from Travelers. I think it's about $400/year for something like $50k. It went up slightly when we added my fiance's engagement ring but not too much
  • I hope they hit up my place. I got all kinds of junk I can't seem to get rid of.
  • I pay about $330 a year for the usual amounts of coverage with a $500 deductible from Liberty Mutual. That includes a 5% group discount through my job.

That break-in was a couple blocks from me, and we also had one right here, though not in the apartment specifically. I'm with those who got the insurance mainly for fear of fire, and for the liability (I too have a vicious attack cat), but I have enough crap that a burglary could get me over the deductible pretty quickly.
  • I can't believe a thread like this caused a long time lurker like me to actually post. Now I will be subject to Flexi and Mamacita's bawdiness, Sweet Tea's sage advice, Caaahyoko's sarcasm and Daver's
whatever-ness-ism and all the rest of ya. I'm doomed I tell ya, I'm doomed. Now I need to figure out links and quotes and smilies. And maybe adopt another kittie. Oh crap.

this sounds like she is considering posting, but hasn't committed to yet.

We should wait to call her names until she actually posts.
  • I expect to get a lot of critisim from Raw for not naming other names. Um Um Livetotravel, Pitu.. um. Maybe it's easier just being a lurker.

And Why - you assume I am a woman because I have cats? That's just lame. I'm a guy. I guess I can start a thread on sexism on Brooklynian....
  • Any thoughts on Travelers?
  • Now I've high-jacked a thread so I guess a Mod needs to break it off into a new one called NuuB or whatever. I should have stayed a lurker. It's a very happy place.
  • raw wrote: Any thoughts on Travelers?
So far, so good. Haven't had any issues and coverage is pretty comprehensive. :D

I pay $150 with a $500 deductible. I live on the border of Greenwood Heights or what is sometimes known as South South Slope, not Park Slope "proper".
  • filmlover, who do you use and how much coverage do you have? Is it for robbery as well as fire?
