Help - found orange tabby cat! Needs new home

We noticed a few weeks ago an orange tabby cat, meowing loudly, in the back of the Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture. Several people in the neighborhood have been taking turns putting out food for the friendly kitty. Today, I put out some food and as I watched the kitty gobble it up, someone who works at the BSfEC came out and took the food away saying the cat and the food were bringing vermin into the yard. He told me he called CACC and they won't take the cat unless it's in a carrier and he apparently doesn't want to put in that effort. (probably a good thing anyway - I don't know how well a grown cat would fare at CACC) I understand his point about the food but it's obviously upsetting to see food taken away from a clearly hungry and seemingly sweet cat. I would be happy to trap the cat in one of our carriers and bring her to a shelter but not sure if she belongs to someone...any suggestions as to the next best step? We have our hands full already with 2 kitties but I would like to see this cat get some help!
