Sick of Gunshot Posts! — Brooklynian

Sick of Gunshot Posts!

I've been seeing gunshot posts on this board for the past few years, and frankly I dont find them interesting nor informative! Maybe it's just me, but hearing gunshots in Crown Heights or for that matter Brooklyn North, is not all that uncommon. If theres something unusual about the gunshots, IE: gunshots coupled with someone getting shot or some other strange incident please feel free to post, otherwise lets just chalk it up to fireworks.

  • You may be getting tired of hearing about gunshots, and find them not interesting, but I think it's a really bad idea to start thinking they're "normal", and should just be ignored. They are most definitely NOT fireworks, nor even remotely comparable.
  • I don't think gunfire is ever normal, however it is a common occurrence in certain parts of Brooklyn and therefore to me it's not noteworthy.
  • When I see a post title that doesn't interest me, I generally don't bother to read the contents of the post. Must just be me.
  • I'm kind of in agreement with KWAK here. Posts usually go like this:

    - Say, did anyone hear anything?
    - Where?
    - Not sure
    - yes/no/maybe
    - Anyone know what happened?
    - ....................................................(silence)
    - Gee, I hope everyone's ok......
    - (snore)

It does get a bit redundant after a while. Unless you KNOW something, don't bother posting about it. Might be a car back-firing. People always think that guns sound like they do in the movies....
  • I like to know what's going on. especially after having been the victim (in another country, long story) of a home invasion robbery. I want to know who is up to what, and that's what I love about the neighborhoods in brooklyn. everyone knows who is up to what. can that be said about manhattan? I lived there for years and nah, don't think so. neighborhoods here are, well, neighborhoodie and people understand the need to pass along critical (or not so critical) info to each other. I appreciate this. if you don't, no problem. ignore the threads. but, I like to know when I'm interested in the info.

then again, apparently my home invasion robbers were finally identified and the community is deciding whether to bury them alive or cover them in gasoline and burn them to death.

    Newsflash: Whynot agrees with KWAC
  • When I see several posts about the same topic with little to no comments other than.... I heard shots at this location, No I heard shots at this location, I heard 3 shots, no I heard 3 and then 2 more. it does get quite boring.
  • You know, come to think of it, posting of gunshot threads could be looked at as a form of "KWACing"

    LOL- YES!

Finally, someone who understands the definition as it was initially intended....

You've got access to Victor's picture, don't hesitate to use it.
  • I hate all the "did I just hear...." type of gunshots posts. Especially since inevitably someone wanders into the thread months later all "zomg, i was going to move there but the neighborhood is so dangerous! Is it really like Baghdad?"

Then again, keep going if it persuades someone like that not to move there.
  • yes, but there is some truth to the threads in Crown Heights being about crime, and the threads in Park Slop being about Coffee, muffins, tailors, etc.

    ...they would be different neighborhoods.

Reading the Park Slope thread, you'd think there was no crime and all coffee (bad conclusion).

Reading the Crown Heights thread, you'd conclude it was all crime and no coffee (also bad conclusion).

^ This just totally KWAC-ed me up.

    #-o

I somehow missed the recent origin of the above Victor thingy.

Can I get a link, so's I can be up with the Kool Kidz?

Sucks being on the outside, staring in. (hah)
  • I did actually try to upload the Victor pic for my avatar and his package had too many pixels.
  • Victor is more than his package. Stop objectifying him.

you might have to save it in lower resoltion first. Daver has fun with pictures, he could likely give you an avatar version of Victor holding a kitten....
  • Oh, THAT Victor!

[quote=Mamacita]Oh yeah that's hot baby

    AAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAAaaaaaaaaa.

    Thank you folks.

Oh, and here it is in avatar size:

  • I moved to my current residence in PLG 14 months ago. I sleep in my front bedroom, which faces the street, and is in earshot of Flatbush. Generally, it gets loud after midnight pretty regularly - music and yelling and the like. While I'd prefer that it be quieter, I don't mind that. Sometimes, someone sets off fireworks, and I don't mind that either. It's been like that since I moved in. I just invested in some earplugs, works like a charm.

There have been three nights of gunshots in the last week. This was out of the norm that I have experienced, and as far as I know also still illegal, so I thought I'd look out there to see if there was a forum of folks who lived in the area who might know what's going on.

I think it's too bad that instead of fostering a supportive or informative environment, you've chosen to make this a forum where you can express your blase attitude towards this kind of activity. Gunshots are out of place in any high population area, and I hope I never get as casual about it as some of the folks here.
  • It has nothing to do with casual, rather than just posting something that occurs day in and day out in the City and basically contributing nothing to this forum other than,"did anyone hear the gunshots last night"?
  • I kinda agree. It's kind of pointless if you hear vaguely hear gunshots somewhere in the distance and in that case creating threads over largely vague, non-confirmed information is not productive. If it is verified and has a notable impact on the community then I think it's worth posting.
  • superkpg, so far you are in the majority. KWAC's poll numbers (see above) say a total of 11 people (8 + 3) "find them informative" or "somewhat care" about gunshots and find the posts informative, while only 5 think that they are "Useless and only creates fear and paranoia".

those who find the posts annoying (like me) seem to be more vocal, however.

I'd like to think I'm supportive of you using earplugs, and definately don't want you to get shot. ...but I'm not sure I can help make the gunshots go away.

there's been lots of anti-crime advice written inresponse to the gunshot posts, please follow it. Please realize that you are at low risk of gun violence as a regular person. ...but yes, occasionally a bullet hits wrong target ...and, yes, occasionally people get shot during robberies or randomly. Things like this are newsworthy.

A new coffee shot opening, definately newsworthy.
    Need a tailor, definately newsworthy.
you get my point ...wait, what was my point?
  • The reason people like me ask that question is because we want to know. How does that inconvenience you? Why wouldn't pathetic people like me use a forum like this to ask for information that we wouldn't otherwise get in the regular media?

Someone else suggested you don't read those posts if they bore you so much. I agree.
  • A new coffee shot opening, definately newsworthy.
    Need a tailor, definately newsworthy.
you get my point ...wait, what was my point?
Nice slip, or was that intentional?

I probably wrote shot after seeing Victor's photo.
I'm shaking my head, because on the Crown Heights board we are tired of reading "did you hear that gun shot?" posts, but somehow will tolerate Park Slope's endless threads coffee shops, etc.

    "moths that eat cashmere?"

Truce? When people will post their Gun Shots heard posts; I'll try to ignore them.

I'll only "Victor" them if they KWAC.

Gunshots are more routine than "cashmere eating moths" or even a new coffee shop opening, so I'm not sure they are news ...like I said, truce.

P.S. So far the "pro gun shot posts people" are ahead, and only 36% of people find such posts annoying ...but its a small sample.
  • Not to take the hopeless stance but really, what do the threads do? I really hate to say this, but we live in Crown Heights... gun shots are a regular occurance. It's just a byproduct of the demographics and conditions in the neighborhood. I understand the concern but don't see the purpose.
  • I don't really see the harm in trying to ascertain if someone was shot. I think people in the community have a right to know of the shootings in the area they live. Besides, it is not like everyone is forced to read every post. I understand it breeds into the stereotypes of the area, but unfortunately gun violence is a reality in CH.
  • We should just have a "gunshots" board, not bound by geographic location.
  • bolletje wrote: We should just have a "gunshots" board, not bound by geographic location.
Now that's an idea. I understand about the single posts that are unanswered, they do seem to clog up the board at times, but it guns we're talking about, which, as someone above pointed out, are highly unwelcome and inappropriate in a crowded neighborhood. I, for one, always want to know what's going on...

So, can we have a "Gunshots?" board?
  • um....

a gunshots board doesn't make sense. i mean, i'm sort of nebulously sorry to hear about crime in, say, williamsburg, but it doesn't interest me the way crime in my own neighborhood does.

but that's just my opinion. feel free to ask DH.
  • Guys...at 10 pm I heard gunshots on Clarkson at Bedford, maybe 2 doors down from me with plenty of people were walking on the street minding their own business. At least 6 shots. I think they were fired from a car. Seriously, it was scary :(
I dropped to the floor. I Don't think anyone got shot but the police did roll by 5 minutes later.
