  • Thanks for doing this! I know you didn't want to, but I bet it'll really make things more pleasant around here. Sometimes you just have to take a hard line with terrists.
  • I think that's "tersts," apollonia!

I'm very happy about this, but I feel like it's making life too easy for the new mods! Where's the trial by fire?!

"Back in my day, we had to fight trolls all over the place while using spotty dialup!"
  • Thanks Andy! I guess it truly is a festivus miracle - or maybe the airing of grievances really does work.

By the way Andy where were you last night? Carnoivoire pointed out that festivus is not truly over until the head of the household has been pinned. We have decided that you are head of the this "household" and should "watch your back"
  • horray!
but yeah, andy, we miss you! we needed you for the feats of strength!
  • Thank you, Andy!
  • so did we figure out whether this applies to all boards or just the PH board?

We think it's just on PH for now.
  • It's sad that it has come to this. I started out as a guest, myself. Then I realized that no aliens would invade my brain if I registered.
I am hopeful that this will improve the board.

    praise the ancient old ones.

    and "bob".
  • Okay, maybe this will not inprove doodly-squat...
  • Dang, now I won't be able to log out and then write anonymous snarky comments.

    Just kidding.

I'm glad you did it. I post regularly on another forum which banned guest from many of their forums about a year ago and things definitely improved.

    CHEERS!

    :cry::cry::cry:
  • YAY! it's JUST what I wanted!

let's hope one tiny hurdle will be enough...
  • I know it's only been a few days, but has anyone else noticed how much better the board has been since the guest-posting ban?

Thanks again Andy, for the early holiday present!
  • Subject: posting registration

I don't think requiring registration to post to Dailyheights is a good thing because it will shut out some of the more interesting voices on the board.

Granted, the new rule forced me to register to post this message (I have been reading the board since April and had posted twice as a Guest -- once to answer a question about a condo on my block and another time to make a banal statement about ellis g.), but it will shut out some of the more interesting post-ers.

It was a post by RichBlackGirl that was picked up by another site that first brought me here. The ensuing conversation was fascinating and kind of served as a Gentrification 101 primer. It also revealed some VERY interesting thoughts by members of the Dailyheights community on race and class. As far as I can tell (correct me if I am wrong) RBG posts (even still) as a Guest.

While it is the prerogative of the Site Admin to require registration -- I think it is short-sighted and is a first step to cutting the board off from the outside. Other than RBG, I have read many inciteful comments from numerous Guests. At the same time, it has been Guests that have from time to time been able to answer neighborhood questions that need historical knowledge or have been the first to describe the number of shots heard on Carlton in October (?), among other things.

Sincerest apologies for being contentious on what is essentially my first post, but I find this site to be a valuable resource (and entertaining) and feel registration just to eliminate the occasional uncouth post may not ultimately produce the best result.
  • With all due respect, I don't think the amount of time you've spent here has given you a particularly accurate view of the level of nuisance that the much more than "occasional" obnoxious guest posts created, or the number of valuable registered posters who felt like they were being driven off by it.

I just don't get how requiring registration to post on DH will "shut out some of the more interesting voices on the board." It takes under 10 seconds to register. You click a button that you agree not post anything abusive and then fill out a form with a username, an email address, a password, and a confirmation code. It really is about as quick and simple as it gets.

I searched and there is a registered user called Richblackgirl.
  • some people are too lazy to registered. hmm why dont you guys just let them post by ip this way instead of guest they'll be ip# guest instead so you'll still see whom it is.

He said he has been reading the board since April
  • We voted on this a while ago, and the results were overwhelmingly in favor of the ban. Andy gave the guests plenty of chances to behave until A.G. essentially forced him to listen to the will of the people by derailing threads faster than the mods could repair them. And the #1 grievance at the "airing of grievances" at the DH Festivus party: GUEST POSTING.
