About to make the move - what channels do they offer in HD?

  • Check the website. Not complicated. Definitely easier than someone listing all of the channels for you on a message board.
  • But apparently it was not too much of burden for you to leave a snippy and unnecessary reply. Thanks.
  • Google the term "Time Warner HD" and click on the first link.
  • I'm not looking for a list. Maybe I should be a little clearer: what's Time Warner HD like? Are there any decent offerings? You know, so we could have a discussion, like on a message board?
  • Well it's nothing special. Doesn't offer all those extra HD channels like satellite does. Also Time Warner's signal completely sucks, the picture will freeze, jerk, and scramble constantly (especially during big plays in tonight's monday night game on ESPN HD).

The staff is friendly, courteous, and helpful IF YOU SEE THEM IN PERSON at their office location. If you try to get help by phone, good luck.

Not that there's really any choice other than Time Warner so what're you gonna do.
  • Thanks smug.
  • I've been happy with their HD service... they have a good assortment of channels and have just rolled out movies on demand in HD. I haven't experienced the signal problems that smug mentions. My main gripe is with the HD-DVR interface... it's really clunky and slooooow to respond.

Actually, the reply was very helpful... if you arent looking to be lazy that is :)

....now you have a completely different story. Well, as a TWC customer, it's fine by me. They used to have next to nothing, but it seems to have more than tripled within the past 2 years. Now they just got HD movies on demand... although I am not sure how recent some of the movies are as I dont see Ironman on it yet.

But all the other movie channels have their HD counterparts. Showtime, HBO, Skinamax.

Almost all of the HD's are in the 700's.
So if you want channel 5, it would be 705
  • I have both Time Warner Hd and Directv hd in my house. The HD picture on Time Warner is far superior as Directv has issues with compression. But Directv is hassle free has more HD channels whereas Time Warner has issues every now and then.
  • Pretty decent. There are occasional signal hiccups, but I would imagine you'd get those with anyone, and I'd would say they're rare.

The number of channels is mushrooming, but (through no fault of TW), many of those are pointless HD re-broadcasts of SD channels.

Picture quality is generally great if you just like to watch TV (if you're a videophile with a boner for analyzing the picture rather than watching the show, sure, there are issues).

There are comparions/reviews on the web - consensus is that FIOS has better quality, but we don't have access to that yet. And some/most of the picture quality problems originate with the broadcasters, who try to save bandwidth on their distribution networks, before the picture even reaches TW or Comcast or DirectTV.
  • I love Showtime and HBO HD - Dexter's killings are excruciatingly gruesome, and Bill Compton's fangs are frighteningly more realistic in HD!
  • I agree that our TWC HD channels are rough at times, as smug described. Some of the HD channels are worse--so bad that you can't actually watch a show at times.

But as 8th said, I think it's our HD-DVR box. We just have to trade it in every few months for another one and that seems to do the trick.
  • there's a new Time Warner box explorer 8300 hdc that is much better than than the 8300 hd. I guess the "c" they added stands for some improvement
  • We've actually found the HD to be far less prone to problems but it does mean I have to go into a center and request one.
  • I have TWC--and all the HD channels as well. But I can't find the HD Movies on Demand Channel! I live in Carroll Gardens--is it not available in my neighborhood yet? Do I need a new cable box or something? What channel is it??

    EXCELLENT POST!

The previous generation's remote was FAR FAR FAR SUPERIOR.

The new remote for the HD DVR is just TERRIBLE

    TERRIBLE TERRIBLE TERRIBLE

The response time is unbelievably slow, the buttons themselves are clunky. I offered the guy 100 dollars cash for the previous model's remote at their customer service center and he said the old remote doesnt work with this receiver.

As for the actual receiver, the interface is CRAP.

Try searching for a show, its a ton of fun using their worthless on screen keyboard input.

The receiver constantly causes picture and sound hiccups, during sunday's games I marked down the hiccups per hour on a pad of paper, 25, 21, 20 per hour respectively. That means the signal is basically screwing up every 3 minutes.

As for it being the fault of the receiver, its absurd to make the customer have to constantly change out the receiver.

It grinds my gears that a lot of you park slope bastards can go for days discussing a dog bite or a drinking ticket that has no impact on your life, but the majority of us use Time Warner and put up with this shit. I personally call and go crazy and failing that, have my friend fax a letter in from his law practice on even the simplest of inconveniences but there needs to be a more broad action taken by a greater number of people.

On the bright side, if you go to their customer service office to sign up for service, and are very very courteous to the nice ladies that work the window they often do nice things in return like 6 months of free HBO and getting their fastest internet speed for the price of their mid speed for a year. Just say you are considering HBO packages etc and wanted to try them out, those old ladies are starving for conversation.
  • One word about the TWC DVR: Tivo. The HD Tivo is amazing and the best interface out there. It was a huge pain in the rear getting it set up initially since it uses cable cards and none of the TW service guys knew how to install them but I've heard that things have gotten a lot better. The only down side to using cable cards is that you lose On Demand, but with HD Movies On Demand coming, I don't really care.
  • I have TWC HD. When it's working, the picture is fantastic. Like others here, I've had problems with signal hiccups, and occasionally the channels appear or disappear, the DVR reboots itself at random, the DVR controls stop working at random, and the series recordings I've set up don't work properly (it misses new episodes but diligently records the Conan O'Brien reruns that come on at 3 a.m. every night -- but not reruns in the normal time slot). I'd also like to see more selection of channels. Something weird happened over the summer; USA-HD appeared for a while at channel 195, well outside the digital tier, which is the 700s. Then it jumped to the 700 tier for like two days, then disappeared altogether. Can't wait for FiOS.
  • My favorite is trying to record the Amazing Race. It is always, ALWAYS bumped by football and the DVR is too stupid to know this. I am also too stupid to ever remember, so I end up with 45 min of 60 Minutes and 15 min of Amazing Race. Aaaaaargh!

I also hate how you can't search for a show if it is going to appear more than 6 days from the present day. So, for example, if you just missed Heroes and want to set it to record next week, good luck because it won't be in your list of shows until one or two days later!

I love LOVE love France's satellite tv interface, called Mosaic. Shows you video thumbnails of all the shows playing. When you "mouse" over the thumb, the audio for that show kicks in. Brilliant!

    A FUCKING MEN

Last night the DVR didn't record GOSSIP GIRL even though I have it scheduled to record new and repeats because I know how stupid the DVR machine can be. Still it messed up. I was exceedingly pissed off and so I downloaded it illegally off the internet because the fucking cable service I pay over a hundred bucks a month for can't deliver a fucking program from a BASIC channel.

That French interface looks amazing. Someone on this board combine a slingbox, a mac mini, and an apple tv so we can all cancel our subscription to Time Warner HD

Could not agree more. Hate the new thousand undifferentiated tiny buttons uncomfortable new remote - love the ergonomic, logically laid out old one.

BTW, I think TWC were BS'ing you. I have one of each, and I seem to recall the basic functions work just fine if I happen to bring one into the wrong room.

Considering wasting money on a fancy universal remote to get away from the new remote.

    should be channel 700

You know what the new remote is missing?
    That 15 min skip button!

On the old DVR's I was able to hit FF and then skip every 15 min. Now I just gotta wait on the FFx3 speed... why the hell would they get rid of that?
  • Yes, it should be 700, according to the channel line up. However, when I hit 700, I just get ???. When I asked the Time Warner people about 700, they said they didn't think it was a channel! Does anyone out there actually get channel 700, HD Movies on Demand???

I should add, aside from maybe a glitch every now and then, we've been very happy with the picture quality and service.
  • I don't have HD On Demand on Channel 700 either. The TWC website still says "coming soon" so maybe it hasn't been rolled out yet.
  • Thanks, VoodooNYC - I didn't even think to check their website
  • But then again the website also lists the movies that are supposed to be showing on Channel 700 so who knows. I'll call them at some point today and see if I can get someone who actually knows what they are talking about (although I'm not terribly confident that's possible).
  • Some of the new channels are only available on the newer boxes - for the DVR boxes, the 8300HDC gets HD On Demand, but the 8300HD does not - and apparently never will.

Ditto for many other new channels....

Check the last few dozen pages pages (of this 500-page thread) for more info:

  • Ahhhh... Thanks that was very helpful and saved me what promised to be yet another frustrating call with TWC. I need to go home and check which boxes I have. I realize now that I was also trying to view Channel 700 through my Tivo instead of the cable box and that is never going to work.
  • tbh, that doesnt sound right.

I dont see why it would depend on the box. Adding new channels has nothing to do with the box afaik.

Perhaps your box hasnt updated itself? Try forcing it. Unplug it from the power for a few minutes, then plug it back in.

HOWEVER, if you have a TIVO with a cable card, you will NOT get any On demand channels due to the cable card limitations.

I dont know how it works if you have a tivo connected to a cable box.
  • Well, I just checked the Time Warner site and, if I'm understanding it correctly, HD Movies On Demand, Channel 700, is only available in Hudson County and Staten Island. IF this is accurate, than it's probably just a matter of time until Brooklyn gets it, too.
