We got a new doggie! I need to know Pet-friendly Slope stuff

Like dog-friendly places I can take her, good pet stores in the area, if there are any dog parks (or special off-leash areas for small dogs), any small dog playgroups, etc.

My last dog was a Great Dane (I lived in another hood) so I'm a little lost on how small dogs function & operate. She seems a little bored (or maybe not as interactive as my Dane was)? But sweet as can be. We rescued her from Sean Casey Animal Rescue http://www.scarnyc.org/ on Sunday - we didn't know we would be adopting a dog that day so we were a little less prepared than I wanted to be.

  • wow thats annoying.
  • WTF is up with that ad!

MOD EDIT: We've got a spammer, post has been deleted. Carry on
  • OMG I can't see my original post so I can't edit it. How did that happen?!

Nevermind, it was the person below my post - they just posted a big brown box? If you right click and block images from that address it goes away. Here's what I said if you can't see it:

I know, I am too. Or I guess I *was*? I am an all-dogs person now. But I do love the Danes still. We're just on the go a lot so we needed a dog that can travel with us and come to work with me, etc.
  • Congratulations! What a cutie. I was just at the Sean Casey Halloween party on Saturday with my newly adopted little furry one; although my dog didn't come from there, they seem like a nice operation so I'm glad you got your pup from those folks.

To answer some of your questions - there is a dog run at J.J. Byrne Park (5th Ave at like 4th St.). The dog run is the small fenced area behind the playground and to the left of the little building (when facing the park from 5th Ave.). This is for off leash play at all times, for all sizes of dog. Be warned that it is kind of dirty in there (due to the woodchip surface not really covering everywhere), so I'd only bring your dog there if you have time for a bath afterwards.

There is off-leash time in Prospect Park - 9pm to 9am, in the Long Meadow north of about 9th St. (and some other areas on the other side of the park as well).

As for pet stores - people like Pet/Dog Delight on 3rd Ave at around 25th St. I found the guy in there very helpful; he even offered some training suggestions and gave me some samples of his high-end food he recommends. The other pet stores I frequent are NYC Pet on 7th Ave at 11th St, Petland Discounts on 5th Ave at 13th St., and two places whose names I don't know - 7th Ave at like 4th St (west side of street) and 7th Ave at like 15th St (east side of street). Those are listed in decreasing order of inventory size. Prices are similarly semi-high at all of those. I found NYC Pet to have the best assortment of quality foods. For buying a bunch of crap at once (like the bed, leashes, collars, brushes, treats, toys, shampoo, poop bag holder, etc.) when on a budget, I'd actually recommend a trip to Target.

And I know of no small dog playgroups, but I'd love to set up a group, especially among others who frequent Prospect Park nighttime off-leash hours. I'm too much of a sleepyhead to do the morning times.

Oh - also, for days when I have to work late or when my dog is a bit hyper and I can't take her for off-leash play - I put her in Dog's Den daycare. She really has a good time - so much that I can't walk her in the direction of 5th Ave... as soon as we cross to the west side of 6th ave she starts pulling on the leash to drag me there! And when she comes home she's exhausted, so I can get work done around the house instead of playing our usual hours of fetch. :)
  • Thank you so much!! That is all so helpful & exactly what I needed to know!
We were actually at the halloween party on Saturday also (thats where we saw her & the pic was taken) and then poof - on Sunday we had her! It all happened so fast - but I'm so glad we went & got to find her!
  • this doesn't help, but post more pictures of your dog, she looks awesome
  • From all of my looking, Target has the cheapest poop bags. 120 (biodegradable) for $6 or $7. The same online or at other places ranges from $10-15 in my searches.

I second off-leash in Prospect Park if it's doable for you. If you're not ready to let her loose, you can still go and let her socialize. I've heard there are some small dog play groups in the park so it could be a good time to ask around about that.

My dog is a picky eater with less than the toughest stomach, so I went through all kinds of foods to find one that he likes and makes for good digestion. The Halo Spot's Stew (we mainly do dry food, but it's the only brand of wet food he's ever actually eaten) was the obvious winner for my pup. It's pricey but probably wouldn't be that bad with a small dog. So, if you're looking for a really healthy dog food for your pet I recommend it. Plus the kibble is really small so I'm sure a tiny guy could handle it.

Ikea is where it's at for poop bags!

    Toys, lots of toys!
  • And don't forget the Mexican hat!
  • Thanks, everyone!! I'll post more pics of her soon, Comfortable Smug ;)
She came down with kennel cough from being at the shelter and also has been licking her surgery site where she got spayed so she went to the vet this morning and is now sporting a super fancy giant lampshade collar.

Hopefully she'll be back to good health soon!
I always thought people who bought dog clothes and shoes for their dogs were just a little eccentric - but she shivers outside without her sweater so I guess the little ones really do need all that stuff! Now I have to stock up on some stylin goods. . .
  • www.muttropolis.com has cute little dresses! Get her a little pink dress!!!!
  • We need a pic of your boxer in a pink dress!

RockerGirl - hope the kennel cough isn't too bad. My furrygirl had it, too - she sounded like a giant wounded goose. And when she sneezed she'd always hit her head on the floor.
  • I highly recommend NYC Pets on 9th Street between 4th & 5th Avenue (formerly VC Pets) now that Mike is back. He's so knowledgeable...and yes, they deliver.

I value my life. However, I do have this:

  • Haha. Oh man. I don't think I'm ready for any fancy dresses yet - she's maybe more of a hoodie/sweater kind of girl for now, although I wish I had had her on Halloween so I could have done something funny.

I just did a big order of cheapie dog clothes through petedge.com - I saw so many of them on other sites for 3x as much as they had. It's going to take me a while to accept the fact that dog clothes for some reason cost the same as human clothes.

Her cough was really bad, but seems to be improving today. I'll grab a pic of her in her beautiful giant lampshade when I get home.
  • Congrats on your new addition to the family!
I just want to plug this website

because it is run by caseopele and her mom and we all know how much caseo does for the animals in her and other 'hoods.
I know caseo won't pimp herself out so I though I would ;)

My husband and I are getting very close to caving in on getting my son a dog.

Those little rubber boots are genius! I was looking for a boot that wasn't huge and didn't require anything complicated. I wonder if they sell them anywhere local that i could pick some up?
  • Oh my god! How CUTE! Oscar (and the new puppy [what's her name, anyway??]) needs an Evil Elf t-shirt!
  • All of the message board dogs should start a gang where they all walk around the hood in the same shirt. haha.

Her name is Magdalena Gran Reina de Caninas, but we just call her Maggie. ;)
  • that dragon getup ROCKS.
  • That's DOGZILLA! RRAARRR! He hated me for that ALMOST as much as he hated me for this:

  • OMG I just want to squish his cute face!
  • I love his underbite!
