Holiday Trees In The Slope

LongTimeSloper wrote: so, tell me oh wise Carnivore, just what holiday are secular people who go out and buy trees and then exchange gifts on December 25th celebrating? did you come up with a new holiday just to fit your ideals?
They are celebrating the holiday season, which includes every holiday during that time. And some people just like the smell of an evergreen tree and exchanging presents.
And, I am still wondering what you call those colorful eggs that people decorate in the spring.
And the eggs that Christians decorate for Easter are Easter eggs. -

Yes, everyone should honor my lord. Question is: Who can guess what lord I honor?
Loki!

And what should we now call the planets? See, I don't worship the Greek gods, and I'm offended that it's suggested we call them Mars, Venus, Mercury, etc.
-
Yeah, it used to be Mooney's :P but they closed my church down

You are a riot, you really are! -
Why is everyone yelling? Can I please have a german chocolate baby Jesus for Christmas? I like chocolate. I like Jesus. We all win!
Carny - call her Harriette. She likes that. -

Straw man argument. I'm not suggesting we need to change the name of Corpus Christi, or any of the San cities in the West and South. I'm just saying that you can't tell people what to call something that they put in their own home for their own reasons. -

Do you know where one might purchase a holiday German chocolate baby Jesus?

You're the one who was so outraged that someone would dare to not mention Christmas when inquiring about a holiday treehitokiri wrote: Second of all, you are CORRECT. It is not a Christmas Tree if the person is not celebrating christmas
Exactly. And just because they buy it in December doesn't mean they're celebrating your holiday.
Decorating trees has nothing to do with the birth of Christ.
Would you be outraged if I refused to call you a human?
Ok, they used the name Holiday Tree... but you cant have a holiday without a name. WHICH holiday are they getting a tree for? Christmas. Hense it's a Christmas tree.
Have you ever gotten a "holiday tree" for Memorial Day or the 4th of July?
it's as simple as this.
If it looks like a duck and walks like a duck... -
Anyone know where I can get a potted tree? Christmas trees are sad for the environment imo. I know Union Square has some potted ones, but how about in our nabe?

Why is it so complicated for you that when someone has a tree and doesn't celebrate Christmas, it's not a Christmas tree?

What do you think the Pope (not to imply that all Christians are Catholic, but just as an example) would say if you asked him what it means to "celebrate Christmas"? Do you think he would say that someone who buys a tree and puts tinsel on it is celebrating Christmas? I don't think so. -
My 2 cents worth - since no one knows when Christ was actually born (some say May, others put it in the summer), Christians adopted the winter solstice as a means to incorporating the pagens into the Christian faith without too much disruptions. Some say that pagens worshipped trees, this would possibly explain why we still have a "Christmas" tree - without Christianity, modern day pagens could have easily called it a "Bernard" tree and we'd be wishing everyone a happy Blue Sky Day while shopping at target for the latest rune game.

Carnivore,
If people are free to call the tree whatever they want, as I believe you claimed, then non-Christians are free to call the tree a Christmas tree. Just because they call something by it's name doesn't mean they're falling for the particular dogma behind that name.
Again, I'm not Jewish, but even if menorahs get so popular every household in the world has one, I'm calling it a menorah because, well, that's what it's called. -

Call your own tree a Christmas tree, but don't call mine one because it isn't one. It is more accurately described by another word that we have known as a tree.

And if you don't celebrate Channukah and want to call your menorah a candelabra, I can guarantee you that Jews are not going to take offense. -
Pretty sure you don't speak for all the Jews.

No, I don't. But the point remains clear. -

Dont try to make a point by severely cutting up a quote and making it sound like I am closed minded without an actual point.
Let me help remind you of the full post

The bold part is the MAIN point that I would like you to work with.
Coincidentally it is the part that you left out and shot at me saying why cant I cant understand your reasoning.
That bold part IS the reason why i dont understand your reasoning. -

But who will speak for the Druish? -

The schwartz. End of story! ;p -
With the power vested in me by me, I hereby declare that all trees are now called Holiday Trees, except those trees that are decorated in commemoration of Christmas. Those trees will be called Christmas Trees. All other trees will remain just trees.
Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah
BTW - anybody know where I can get a Holiday Menorah? -

I didn't cut up your quote. I quoted you directly, and then you went back and edited what you said afterward.
And to address your point, I've already answered that question when LongTimeSloper asked it.Carnivore wrote: [quote=LongTimeSloper]so, tell me oh wise Carnivore, just what holiday are secular people who go out and buy trees and then exchange gifts on December 25th celebrating? did you come up with a new holiday just to fit your ideals?

Carn - you're going to have to stand behind me at the Festivus party while I use Harriette to beat people back who want to do you harm.
-
my edit was 11:17
your post was 11:21
but it was an edit, so its possible it happened. I'll give the benefit of the doubt -

The post is timed from when you hit "submit". I probably had quoted you and at least 4 minutes elapsed while I was typing my reply.

Surely no one will want to do me harm based on a simple debate!
But thanks for the offer.
-
Nah, this isn't physical. I've never been to an outing, but might have to attend this one to see how ridiculous the drunken debating gets. Please, no recording devices.
-
I just want an excuse to bring my pretty pink tree with me. Kick Carny's ass everyone!

Remember, there will be the traditional Festivus "Airing of Grievances". I think I know what yours will be...
Howdy, Stranger!
