I don't know if this was directed at me, but my point wasn't that they didn't come tell me the car was towed...my point is that when I used the online system AND CALLED the police precinct they specifically said they did NOT have the car. How exactly would one track down a car when they don't report that it's been towed? I didn't know if it was stolen, towed by the cops or towed by a private company (since it was parked in a seemingly legal spot.) I believe companies are required to report the tow within a certain period of time (and the NYPD, who towed mine, def should have reported it almost immediately,) but it just sat in the impound while I started filing paperwork with geico for it being gone for good.
As for the poster who said they weren't informed of the tow, they don't have to inform you. It is up to the car owner to keep track of the car. -

I apologize. I misinterpreted your point. I am surprised that the police had no record of it being towed. That is just crazy. How did you end up finding it? -
I've always thought that putting a sticker on your car as described in the original post is illegal. Of course, it is a less severe punishment than being ticketed and towed. But it also is true that the Dept of Sanitation does not want to go through the process of ticketing and towing every car that is illegally parked when it is time to clean the streets. I suppose you could sue in small claims court if you suffered some kind of damage as a result of the Dept of Sanitation's conduct, which I think can be accurately described as vandalism. So until someone successfully challenges this practice, it will continue.

yeah...I hate the money grabbing mentality of the city. When you break the law, then police should leave a marker on the car stating that its ok to urinate on it, and after several offenses, ejaculation is permitted. I think people will abide by the law sooner than whats currently in place.
-
The stickers serve a fine purpose, which is providing some actual form of deterrent for those who find money is not an object and would otherwise care less about the relatively small ticket fine.
When you're dealing with neighborhoods like Park Slope, where individuals are willing to pay $2000 for a single person apartment, $3-4 for a bunch of bananas, etc., then the only way to really get these types of people to follow rules is to threaten them with actual inconvenience if they don't follow them. -

ok, what about the other neighborhoods then? it's not just Park Slope, it's the entire city.

and like i previously said, it's bullshit, they want/need you to break the parking laws in order to "try" and balance the budget. -

It wouldn't be very good form to 'tailor' the penalty for illegal parking by neighborhood, now would it? Stickers only for Park Slope, Brooklyn Heights, the UWS, etc., would raise even more complaints than stickers for the whole city.
I'm not going to disagree with you that the city does hope that many of us park illegally. Kind of like the 'quiet wine picnic in the park' thread, however - if you don't like the punishment, how about not breaking the law? That's usually a pretty reliable way to solve the problem. -

Oh my god Carmen, this EXACT same thing happened to me when I was car sitting my neighbors car! It didn't happen to be on Prospect Ave did it? -

Yes this happens. Eventually, 4 days later as well, while finalizing the theft report, it just "popped up" in the system. And of course I had to pay for those 4 days it was in the pound. Arg.... I had let this go but now I'm getting angry all over again. -

Haha no this was 16th st. I fucking hate that parking spot. The funny thing is that when I finally found the car and went to get it I asked them why it was towed and they said that they had towed 13 cars from the same spot THAT DAY!!! Even now I drive by it and there are always cars parked there. What the shit is that?! -

Yep. I know your pain. Also, to add to our little story: when I called the precinct, and informed the officer of where the car was parked, she said "oh, I'm sure you didn't get towed from there... no one ever gets towed for that violation." -
Take the car to a car wash. They will remove the sticker for free.

if there is a city ordnance saying they can do it then its not vandalism.
and surely there must be..
heres a thought
move your car !
oh yah, i neglected to mention that i showed up at my car 15 minutes before alt side only to discover a flat. despite wd-40 ing the living shit out of the lugs they wouldnt budge. so i drove on the rim to a flat fix.
my dress clothes are no longer dress clothes, i missed about 45 minutes of work, but it wasnt "impossible" -

Honestly, at that point I would be about three shades past Screw It and taken my chances with Sticker, Ticket, or both while desperately hoping to avoid Tow.

After you pay the $15 for washing the car. And the tip, for the courtesy of removing the sticker.
Save yourself the aggravation - move your car the night before. -
Basically, i view these tickets as an additional tax on people who have cars. But the main reason a lot of us have cars is due to inaequate public transportation within the borough of Brooklyn. The transit system is designed to bring people into and out of Manhattan, but if you need to travel within the borough of Brooklyn, forget it-- you're talking 2 buses and a long wait time. So the city creates a situation where you need a car and then looks for all kinds of ways to make money from that inevitability.

Im sure i was three shades past crimson but
i'm one determined sob
besides that it would have had to get done later anyway,
once i was late and filty , being a bit later and a bit filthier
was less concerning.
BONUS
I am strangely smug about getting oil/grease all over a brooks brother shirt. 8) -

i'm bumping this up because BG's car "vanished" early weds morning--we think it was too close to the hydrant. it certainly wasn't stolen; it's a 95 tercel.
he called the precinct and the desk guy said it can take xx days to enter the system... but it's yet to come into the system, so likely accruing storage fees.
has anyone whose had this happen fought those storage fees?
(btw, he will be filing a stolen car report, like carmen did... i came back to search for the thread after remembering it happened to carmen) -
unless he was directly in front of the hydrant i doubt they would have towed him just for that offense. does he owe any outstanding tickets?
you can search online for towed cars.
http://www.nyc.gov/html/dof/html/parking/park_towed_vehicles.shtml -
vidro, he was close to the hydrant and had outstanding tickets.
this happened in the very early hours on weds, and it's yet to show up in the system. as i mentioned, he's called the precinct, they have no record. -
did you try the online search? i was towed off of 8th ave in manhattan once and it was in the system within hours - maybe it's just due to the holidays that it's not in the system yet.
-
yes, we've been trying the online search since wednesday
-

not true. i was once towed for being too close to the hydrant on Carroll and 6th. you're supposed to be 15 ft away and i was maybe 12. i fought and won the ticket only because they had the wrong year on the ticket. like an idiot, i didn't even try to (didn't think to) fight the storage fee.

i had no outstanding tickets either. -
the precinct said, actually, that they can tow you if you're near a hydrant even if you have no outstanding tickets
-
They would tow you for being too close to a hydrant, especially if he already has tickets on the car. it is odd that it hasn't shown up in the system yet, we have been towed before and so has my neighbor and the cars were in the system within hours.
Are you sure it wasn't stolen? '95 Tercel or not, someone still could have taken it. -
he's about to report it as stolen.
but, the police guy at the precinct felt that the traffic cops, not the parking cops, got him and that they were notorious for taking their time to enter those plates into the system.
if this is the case, i think he should fight the storage fees. he's been taking screen-shots of the page that comes up and says as for xx time/date your car isn't in the system. -
try calling the tow pound directly

Any news? Was it actually stolen?
