Charcuterie: neglected treasure or cop dive?
evil triumphs over goodness, darkness blots out the sun, etc etc., but while we wait for the end let's enjoy what we've got.
I defy anyone to order a Godfather sandwhich at weird Charcuterie on flatbush and st. marks and not agree that it's the best damn Italian hero in Brooklyn. And where else can you eat your meal under a stuffed bull's head?

i am so excited to hear that! i've always wondered about that place ... and i love a good italian hero. i might stop there on my way home.

You can certainly get an old school, filling meal there at a decent price. I used to get the ziti sometimes in the winter. Some of the packaged stuff on the shelves is a bit dusty, but as a takeout lunch place, it's great.

Subject: Love The Place
I love this place...his Pastrami sandwich rivals Katz's in LES...he also has fresh baguettes and a smokin' cheese selection. He's also much less expensive than the fancier places in the slope or on Vanderbilt. Interesting side story: The people from St. Mark's Bistro opened a fancier, hipper charcuterie right next door to his place, but it went out of business in months because the locals continued to support the old guy. -
OK. I'm going there tomorrow to check it out.
-
I also like that place. It's totally old school.
I also sometimes go to Russo's on 7th Ave in Park Slope for that type of thing, but the Chacuterie place is way closer and the guy there is really nice.. -
glad to see I'm not the only one who appreciates this place. And check out the large wall mural while you're waiting for your meal. Original artwork and a gut-busting hero...it doesn't get any better than this.

Subject: sandwich sooooo goood
I agree 100% about the sandwiches on Flatbush Ave's Chacuterie!!
However, still not sure why there is not a good butcher in Prospect Heights.
I use a butcher in Rockaway Beach when I visit my parents because their meats are far superior to most! If you ever visit the Rockaways don't miss Currans on 129 street.
Bon Apetit -
As promised, I have taken up the challenge offered by the queen_of_pies. I am currently eating a Godfather sandwich from Charcuterie. It is very tasty. It is also one hell of a big sandwich.
It's a very, very good italiam hero.
I wish they had sopresatta there.
Why is roast beef featured so frequently in their sandwiches? Is it particularly excellent?
News Flash: Charcuterie will be moving!
According to Mike (the owner), the landlord wants to raise his rent from 3K to 10K. So Mike's moving across the street into a storefront that he owns (between the laundromat and the medical offices on the north side of Flatbush between St. Marks and 6th). According to Mike, the owner really thinks he can get 10K for the space.
Mike also told me that the guy who's taking on the City Lighting space is "scared" about how he's going to make his 10K rent (I believe someone on another thread said that the owner of the building was doing the upcoming Mexian restaurant--not so, according to Mike).
In summary:
1) A very, very good sandwich. I'm willing to try more if anyone will suggest another (I get overwhelmed by the choices).
2) Charcuterie is moving. Please continue support in the new locale. Of note, that locale is in Prospect Heights, so we can all support it wholeheartedly.
3) City Lighting may (surprise!) be setting up to fail. Still, the windows look nice. -
thanks for the info about charcuterie's move! i love going there for cheese and bread. mmm.

Despite the fact that I do not eat beef (ick -- sorry) I am disturbed by the extraordinary rent increase ... is that legal?
I really do want to support PH businesses ... particularly ones which have a long-time relationship with the community ... -
it's so counterproductive too because there's such a symbiotic relationship between keeping good businesses in the neighborhood and owning property in a neighborhood where there are really good businesses. if landlords charged reasonable rents we wouldn't see new businesses closing their doors left and right and the neighborhood would be more valuable to the landlords -- EVERYONE WINS.

Most Italian cold cuts are actually made from pork, not beef, so bon appetit!

... even worse ...
... but, thanks for the 'heads up' --- much appreciated ...

I would be shocked if there were any restrictions on raising commercial rents in between contracts. -

Medussa:
You wished they had sopresatta. A&S Pork Store on 5th, bet 1st and Garfield has it and they make one hell of a sandwich;
The guys @ Chacutterie are moving to a new location: diagonally across the street next to the laundromat they own (The former bike shop next to Goodwill and laundry) bet St. Marks and 6th on Flatbush -
They also have both hot and sweet sopressatta at Russo's on 7th Ave and 11th St. You can stop there on your way to get real bagels at Bagel Hole on 7th and 13th.

medusa, thanks for the excellent info about mike's move across the street. all the more reason for PHers to go in one (or more) last time and soak up the weird and wonderful ambience of the current store. i fear the mural will be lost
...commercial folk art has almost ceased to exist in our modern world.
cheer yourself up with one of their ruben sandwiches, not on menu but utterly orgasmic. -

dear Anonymous "Deepthroat" Guest, thanks for whispering this news to medusa. got anything on Home Heating Oil??

Nothing on Home Heating Oil, but Muddy Waters sends their regards.
But what's up with the commercial space on the Southeast corner of Carlton and St. Marks Avenues -

Are you talking about the new "iSoldIt" eBay consignment store? -

I think he means that which used to be Peralta Supermarket. I've heard (here?) that it is to be a French restraurant. I think I heard French. Now that I type it it looks crazy. -

I heard that too.
But actually... I might've heard it from you.

I was sad to see that this place had been turned into a Dunkin Donuts.
The old awning and sign were so much cooler than the generic orange D&D.
Did the owners ever open up at another location? -
i went there 2 or 3 times last summer
it was really dark and dank.
i did order this sandwich they made called the godfather. it was freakin huge. it fed me for like 2 days.
i bet it was a pretty cool spot in its hey day. and i wasnt too happy to see it turned into a dunkin donuts, sometimes when i walk past it now i think i have been transported to astoria. -
does this place have any vegetarian sandwiches?

Subject: the Charcuterie
the Charcuterie was the best place there was within walking distance to get an awesome sandwich. Great selection, felt like a food institution of the Tom's Restaurant type of ilk & longevity. Huge, huge sandwiches too. I walked all the way over there just reaching the door before they closed at 7pm only to find that the Charcuterie had closed for good.

I liked that place too. I thought Medusa had posted that they were planning to re-open diagonally across the street (maybe in the "Prime Meats" spot?).

I heard that as well. Did you tell me that the last time we headed to FF? I miss having the corned beef on top of the baked ziti combo. -

I don't remember, but it sounds plausible.
Medusa, are you out there? We need confirmation!
If the search function wasn't broken right now, I'd definitely find the original post.
