  • Was this the community board meeting or the safety meeting? Can someone post what was discussed at both? (Those meetings always have a few who ramble on and on and on about something irrelevant it seems.)
  • This was the safety meeting.

DeBlasio was there, as was somebody from the DA's office and a police captain.

Honestly, I don't think much was accomplished, except maybe having them hear the neighborhood concerns.

A few store owners were there - Christine from the beauty salon on 10th Ave. and the woman from A Moveable Feast on PPW, who was robbed last week.

The big message was to keep calling 911 if you see something suspicious.

Jamal Winter is going in front of the Grand Jury tomorrow and it seems tha they'll have enough proof to indict him (I've read that his prints were found in the store and he already has been convicted of another crime). Grand Jury burden of proof is lower than what it is at trial. If he's indicted, he won't be eligible for bail. Right now he's out as there was an "oversight" from his last conviction (he should have been locked up for violating his parole by commiting crime #2 (an armed robbery on 16th st/4th ave), but because of a law change and nobody telling him he'd be on parole, he was out on the street and able to do this latest crime).

there's a website: www.windsorterracealliance.org which apparently keeps in touch with the precinct and offered to provide updates.
  • If he didn't do it now he would have done it in 5 years or whatever his sentence should have been if the judge didn't screw up. Store owners need to carry a gun. Cops can't get there quick enough if they're even called.

5 years in jail did nothing for this low life. Either life in jail or the death penalty cause there is a good chance he'll get out in 10 years or even sooner on a technicality and he'll do it again.

Was Al Sharpton at the meeting? /sarc.

    I feel the same way.

They (very) briefly addressed the problem of lack of communication between precincts but they don't seem nearly as concerned as they should be. For example, they consider the park out of their jurisdiction. OK, fine, but TALK TO THE COPS IN THAT PRECINCT! When my apartment was broken into and my dog was stolen back in January, none of the cops or detectives I spoke with were aware of the increasing frequency of pet theft despite mutiple cases I've read about in Park Slope alone.
  • Y'all were on NY1 last night.

I suspect that one can get more done through the community board. Maybe I'm wrong.
  • Eh, it was mostly the same crowd as who attends the CB meeting

I saw the news trucks and they were filming the whole thing. I didnt see the coverage yet on NY1, but I'll keep an eye out
  • News 12 Brooklyn was there as well.

Ah, nice break for CB7 then...
  • Here's the info on the tree being planted for Linda:

I'm still searching for news on whether Jamal Winter was indicted today, as he was due to go in front of the grand jury. If anybody hears anything, please post
  • Can anyone give me the name of the DA, and how he/she can be reached?
  • The DA's name is Charles Hynes. Here is his website:

    http://www.brooklynda.org/

What might also be helpful is to call 1-888-VINE4NY which allows you to enter in Jamal Winter's name and get an updated status as to whether he is behind bars. I checked on Saturday, and he was....and I also gave this info to Linda's son (the younger one) at the store
  • Reopened for business. Glad to hear it! Please show your support. I personally have some dry cleaning backing up :-)

  • June 21, 2008 -- ALBANY - Gov. Paterson's administration revealed yesterday that more than 50 violent felons were released recently because of a Court of Appeals finding that judges failed to tell them they'd spend up to five years under parole supervision.

That comes just days after The Post reported that Paterson lawyers had rushed to court to delay a ruling that would spring hundreds of additional murderers and other thugs and end parole for thousands more.

A state Supreme Court justice heard the case in Albany yesterday but reserved judgment.

Officials said the 50-plus felons who were let out had been returned to prison for technical violations of their parole - which, their lawyers argued, had no legal basis to begin with.

State lawmakers, whose summer recess is to begin next week, have been working overtime on legislation that would reverse the court ruling.

But that would come too late for Kyung-Sook Woo, 62, who was killed on May 16 in a robbery at her Brooklyn dry-cleaning store.

Alleged killer Jamal Winter, 22, was freed from Rikers Island weeks earlier after his parole order was thrown out, according to court papers.

  • I don't intend to hijack this thread, but, I'm moving to Park Slope this week, 6th around 12th st, from the Upper East Side. I feel really safe in the UES, and I assumed that Park Slope was a very similar neighborhood in terms of crime. Am I wrong? What's with all these robberies and murders (ok, one)? Is this highly unusual? We have an odd schedule where we are usually out at 1, 2am on the UES, is this not advised in PS?
But on a related note, this is horribly sad. :(
  • this thread is a year old and was resurrected by an asshole who wanted to shill for his business.

you'll be perfectly safe where you are moving. yes, this was highly unusual.

i'm hoping this thread does not get resurrected so that I don't have to think about poor Linda Woo whenever I see it.

in fact....MODS - please lock this thread. Anybody can start (yet another) new thread on safety in the area. Thank you.
