What are you planting this spring?

  • try upside-down berry baskets (weighed down with something) to protect seedlings from birds. starlings are the worst about this.

parsley will occasionally overwinter in our garden, but not at all reliably. and window boxes get much colder. you could probably keep it alive for a while at least by bringing it inside when the weather starts to turn. keep it in the sunniest spot you've got that won't freeze.

i did an accidental experiment with my parsley seeds this spring: half i soaked overnight and planted as normal. they began to appear in 2 weeks. half i soaked overnight, wrapped in a damp paper towel, and left in a plastic bag for a week. they sprouted vigorously in that environment, in half the time! ...but then i planted them, and now there's not much difference in growth between the two groups. oh well.
  • sweet tea, parsley specialist
    :D
    (parsley ninja?)
  • Sweet Tea- the boyfriend did the same thing with our parsley (plastic soaking trick). We'd read an old wives expression about parsley being notorious for superslow germination, but I can't remember what it was now.
  • Just got back from Home Depot - I thought their quality and selection was excellent this year. Here's what I got:

    Petunias
    mutant marigolds (seriously, they're ginormous)
    Dahlias
    Hydrangeas
    Gerber daisies
    Hibiscus bush
    Foxwood lavender
pixie dwarf asiatic lilies (??? - really bizarre looking)

Need to go back to Lowe's tomorrow for herbs (and catnip if they have it) and more soil. Now I just need some energy to plant everything.
  • We took a zipcar out last night and by the time we got to HD (a little after 9) they weren't letting people into the garden stuff outside :( That's why we went there and last time we went there that late it was open but they were very mean last night :/

Lowe's didn't have the specific plants I wanted but did have catnip and some gorgeous light yellow and almost red petunias (I think I bought most of them!). HD's garden section is much bigger and healthier looking! Sadly I can only go when the boy can right now b/c my injured feet literally cannot bend to push the gas and brakes. Ugh.

Voodoo I want to see your garden--it's going to be awesome!
  • good job, voodoo...wanna come plant my stuff while you're at it?

I have marigolds in my window box. I swear they smell like skunk weed :)
  • I'll help babe!

I LOVE gerber daisies. One of my favorite flowers. I miss having a garden :-( I used to plant a 'salsa garden' had all the herbs, hierloom tomatoes, tomatillos, all sorts of chiles. Sigh, miss that house.
  • OQ: It was completely mobbed today, but that sucks they wouldn't let you in after renting a car. Agreed that HD is way way better than Lowe's although I usually like Lowe's herbs better. Also not really a garden but a deck with a lot of pots, but you're welcome to come visit!

Flexi: I'll be right over. What was the address again?

Mami: Most likely getting dirty planting tomorrow if you and Papi are up for it. Cold beer in the fridge!
  • Woot! I'm there. We have food for the bbq, plus my tomatillo salsa. (not hot so don't worry)
  • I've got 75 baby tomatoes already....woohoo!

I need to find some good shady flowers/plants....

Does anybody know the street location of the nursery in Greenwood?
  • sweet tea wrote: WYW, you could try one of those hanging upside-down tomato deals. they're supposed to do well that way, and since they hang, you maximize your space.
I have a coworker who swears by these things.

I planted a few pots of flowers and herbs on our back roof area. Picked some mint and made mojitos yesterday!
  • I found the Greenwood place (5th and 25th). Bought SO much stuff and the garden is looking FABULOUS. I'm so excited by how pretty it is!
  • Flexi-
I love that you counted your tomatoes- (I only have flowers now) -it is so incredibly nerdy. I can relate.
Harvest so far: Strawberries, couple of beets, chives, radishes & lettuce. Yahoo. Enough with this rain though. Waiting for the sun.
  • I am such a geek. I love that the tomatoes are coming - I did 5 plants this year from saplings and every one of them has tomatoes (I can't remember what they all are - one is golden, one is bush early girl, one is beefsteak, one is cherry). I get so excited to see them each day :)

I never managed to succeed with radishes. It looks like I am going to get a bunch of raspberries really soon. And my cucumber bush is growing fast...so I hope that produces something.
  • today i got big snapdragons, mini snapdragons, double impatiens (they look like little roses), alyssium, basil, and so many other things that I'd have to go look at to find the names of. It looks so great! If I'm going to be stuck on crutches for a while, the backyard at least will look pretty
  • Today's tomato count.....drum roll, please.........EIGHTY NINE
  • "Today's Tomato Count"-- I like it.

Tell me that you also do little diagrams of where you have planted everything so I will feel I have a companion in nerdiness.

Your yard sounds lovely. Hope you enjoy it while you heal and watch your tomatoes grow.
  • I wish I had made diagrams - I might have to start! I totally messed up when I was planting seeds in a little hothouse inside. I had labeled the plastic top, and then it fell off and I didn't know which way it went and everything went to shit :-(

I do keep the little plastic descriptions and keep them by the plants so I know what they are and how to care for them. Maybe I'll make a list.

I figure each year I get a little better......My lavender and raspberries have come back and are doing well. Tomatoes are a smash hit....

I took some pics, but forgot what my Flickr account is . I'll have to make a new one.

Oh, and it IS lovely, although disorganized....I can't wait until I can go out there and sweep and weed and do it right...my friend has been a HUGE help, but it needs to be done almost daily.

Flo, you will get tomatoes soon, and I want a report! I can't wait until mine start turning red. If any squirrels get bright ideas, they are gonna get hurt!
  • I think I need a garden gnome
  • Today's tomato count is............................96!
  • Today's tomato count is.....107. I have 2 bumblebees who come by every day and hop from flower to flower.

I also have my first cucumber flower....so I should have a cucumber soon!
  • Here are some things I planted last week

    image
  • that's a lot of tomatoes, and very nice flower you got there. do you have backyard or something?

my chili peppers are starting to turn colors too, the last time i counted a few weeks ago, there were close to 30 of them (but i have plucked quite a number of them too for my cooking). as for my strawberry plant, a squirrel just stole one of my biggest strawberry. i think right now there are probably about 5 or so that are still very small.
  • Yes, I have a backyard. The picture is in front of the nursery, waiting for my friend to pull up with the car.

My raspberry bush has lots of buds, but no fruit yet...I imagine the squirrels are going to try to steal them
  • how do you keep squirrel out? i have put some kind of cage on all of my pots now, including my strawberry pot which i have cut the top of the cage off because it outgrew the cage, but i left the fence along the perimeter of the pot. i have to say it is pretty sharp too. but squirrel still manage to steal it. i ran out of idea and now i took the pot indoor. not sure if my strawberry plant is happy about it. i would love to leave it outdoor but im not sure how to keep the squirrel away
  • spray cayenne pepper on the tomatoes once they turn red
  • 109 tomatoes and (literally) counting. Woohoo!

Plus, I now have 2 cucumber flowers
  • 126 tomatoes and a whole bunch of cucumbers coming. Yay!

I bought Sluggo and put it out yesterday, so I hope that the slugs and snails are on their way out. The all you can eat buffet is O-VER!
  • My aphids seem to be gone without ladybugs! Just some wiping down and possibly drowning from the rain.

My ground petunias are completely stripped by the bastards, though! Let me know what you think of the sluggo.
  • what exactly ARE aphids? something is eating my basil, my coleus and a few other things...all of the leaves have holes.
