  • Aphids are very tiny bugs that you will often find in clusters along the vine and stems and undersides of the leaves of your plants. They suck the life out of your plants slowly. They can be different colors. Generally they don't leave big holes.

Bigger bites are probably something else. With all the rain, probably slugs or snails and I even see pill bugs eating everything this year.

Harvest update: Holy Giant Zuchinni batman. Sister-in-law's rooftop garden (house/cat/gardensitting, I am) is producing like mad. Ate first rooftop cherry tomato today. In the fridge, some beets and lettuce from my garden.
  • thanks, Flo. I'm hoping that Sluggo does the trick and stuff stops getting eaten. Maybe I'll take pics and you guys can let me know what you think is doing the damage.

I'm jealous that your SIL's tomatoes are turning red already. I have 134 tomatoes as of today...including cherries...and not one of them is even a tiny bit turning red.
  • I'm jealous too. SIL's got it going on with the roof garden. My own tomatoes are wee flowers and suffering from something due to rain. But I reap the rewards of housesitting even as I also must scoop cat poop. Am off to my garden to pull some weeds. Enjoy your day.
  • Where is her garden? Local?

Did you grow your tomatoes from seeds or saplings? five of mine are from saplings and they are doing fabulous. The one from seeds is doing ok, but is well behind the others and doesn't even have flowers yet. I'm learning a little more each year about what works and what doesn't. I only wish I was able to really get outside to pull weeds and take better care of everything
  • Local, F. Greene. And when I say garden, I mean a few planters/pots on the roof. She's doing less this year, which makes sense, because its tough to bring up the soil and pots and watering isn't easy. (Way up is the fire escape or inside ladder that's similar.) But she's the kind of gal who can slap something together with a paperclip and gum, so it works for her.

Tomatoes-- from seeds and saplings and one volunteer that sprouted on its own.
Today's harvest surprise: Two red potatoes. I wasn't expecting that.

If you need help weeding, let me know.
  • Today's count = 138 tomatoes. All green. I'm hoping the sun will start turning some of these babies soon. Next I have to keep the squirrels and raccoons away. I will probably spray cayenne pepper....unless somebody has better ideas (couldn't find any cages that would work)
  • More tomatoes than I can count....I was up to 164 and then lost track

However, the big news is that I see 2 baby baby cucumbers. Yay!
  • On the menu tonight for dinner: Peas and beets from my garden..zuke from sister-in-laws roof. Will be replanting some beets this week or weekend. Mmmm beets. Congrats on your baby cukes Flexi.
  • Thanks, Flo....still tons of tomatoes, none turning red....I have about 4 cukes now...super tiny..any my raspberries are coming. Four are out now.....

Sounds like your garden is yielding a lot of good stuff
  • Here come the cukes!

And the lilies popped yesterday (the one remaining bulb that the squirrels didn't eat)

  • Very nice Flexi. I shoveled some horse poop today. Built myself a compost pile finally.

wow! how much space do you have?! we need some pictures, please

I also have more raspberries today and 178 tomatoes...ALL GREEN!

Oh, and a little garden gnome - he's adorable.
  • Lettuce,Potato,Pepper

Ha. No horses in the community garden, just horse poop. I have a plot, 10x20. This is a bed with potatoes, lettuce and a cubano pepper.
  • sweet! How deep to potatoes have to go down?

I think Jackson was trying to help me fertilize today by pooping in my garden. At least that's what I choose to believe :-)
  • I planted them somewhere between 4 and 6 inches down. They are cool to grow, but they look sloppy for a while. You have to let them die back to let the potatoes grow fully, so for a while you have a plant that doesn't look too pretty. Then you dig 'em up, which is good fun.

I hear you can grow them in bags too.
  • Jen's tomatoes

Since you requested pics...here are the sis-in-law's rooftop cherry tomatoes too. :)
  • Oooh...pretty! I wish I knew how to speed up the ripening process. I'm dying to eat some of these tomatoes! Maybe now that we're getting a lot of sun, things will start happening.

His name is Nikolai, but I often call him guh-Nikolai the guh-nome
  • flexi has abducted Karl the Druid.

10x20 is a serious plot for a community garden! Which garden is it? Don't worry, i won't come eat your potatoes.
  • Serious, yes. Because you are a fellow community gardener, I'll PM you. Must protect the garden from potato pillaging. Did you read Omnivore's Dilemma? It's like the mushroom foragers.
  • My neighbor just told me that her tomatoes started turning last week and she ate 3 already. I hope mine are going to start soon...a lot of them are really big.
  • OMG! Three cherry tomatoes are orange. I saw them during my daily pep talk. Yay! Here they come!
  • they're coming! these started turning on Saturday and today 2 more plants have started. Yay!

    and, my cukes!

  • Tomatoes look great Flexi. Here's a red potato and baby carrot from my garden & corn growing in the boyfriend's garden captured on my crappy phone.

  • wow! that's a "baby" carrot? It looks big! That potato is awesome, too! When is the corn ready?
  • I forget the actual growing time of this corn--I'd have to look at last years calendar to tell you. I don't think it was early though--so maybe around 100 days? I'll let you know. This corn is still really young though...not taller than two feet yet, so it's got lots of time to grow. I bet you will be eating your cucumber by next weekend. Yay.
  • I hope I'll be eating cukes and tomatoes! I bought some early tomatoes which should have been ready almost a month ago - June just screwed everything up. Now I have to get my spray bottle of cayenne pepper to give any squirrel who tries to steal my tomato a nasty surprise :-)

I also slugg-o'ed the garden, released the lady bugs and set up a mosquito trap. I gave my neighbor a trap too - we're hoping for a skeeter slaughter! I simply cannot believe the amount of mosquitos we have
  • I ate my first 3 cherry tomatoes today and one of my yellow tomatoes is ready. I have a few others starting to pop too. Yay!
  • Yay. I bet they were delish. Did you eat them right then and there or actually have patience to bring them inside?
