edited November -1 in Park Slope
After last nites debacle...there was some impromptu party in the park where about 1000 folks convened. cops did nothing. BBQ's all over the place, glass bottles and alcohol, garbage this morning was holy hell. prospect park west last nite was filled with motorcycles parked in walkways and driving along the pedestrian paths in the park, cars parked in front of hydrants, trucks and cars and bikes in bus stops...cops did NOTHING NOTHING NOTHING..........garbage everywhere. Please tell me why the cops did nothing while the rest of us law abiding citizens get tkts when we double park to run in to get our ill grandparents from the doctor...

  • Amazing.

I was out taking some pictures and helping pick up (I have a dog so I was targeting the tons of bones and small sharp objects) with park employees. According to one employee there was a permit for the area but it probably wasn't for the thousands that they think it had. I hope there was a permit and someone gets fined big time. It was horrendous.

The kid groups that come to the park were having a hard time finding clean/safe play spots with any shade since many of them usually congregate around the trashed area.

There were easily 25 piles as large as this one plus the tons of scattered bottle caps, utensils and broken glass.

  • New website/project dedicated to just that...

Holy cow! Good place to pick up a spare grill. I can't believe people are dumping those!

  • There were at least 4 decent grills. These two were the smallest.
  • Oh, and I sent a few photos to respect prospect since the first people out cleaning asked me to (I think mostly dog owners who clean the park on Mondays).
  • ridiculous
  • I hope some of you with pictures of what they left behind email them to these assholes.

As a person who uses the park and a dog owner who takes their dog there I want to thank you for helping clean up :) xoxo

ah i misunderstood, thought you were saying fido was responsible for the event that left the mess.
  • Here we were, Brooklynians being respectful of the rules of the park by having a picnic and not a BBQ, yet, as I suspected would be the case, mayhem took place everywhere.

As I sat in our tranquil picnic spot I watched some lowlifes start a BBQ directly under a tree. The police drove by. They did nothing. And this is in an area where BBQing is not allowed. The police do not care. This is just a small microcosm of the whole city.

The police never enforce anything, unless their God-like selves decide to do so (mostly because they don't like the way you look). The police will then show up after something goes awry, take notes, and act as if they were oblivious to it happening.

    The police are ass-clowns.

There are no laws in NYC (until you get caught). So break all the laws (because most likely you won't get caught).
  • The national parks have the very large garbage bins, which we seem to desperately need in the summer. While there's no excuse for the way these people left the lawn, there's also no excuse for the constant failure of the Parks Dept to adequately supply enough trash receptacles.

They can't keep trash cans out there. I remember once a bunch of new cans went out. Within probably 2 months of the cans coming out, maybe 1 in 4 of the many we passed on our walks disappeared. When I asked various park folks and the Fido group (who donates lots of cans) I was told people steal them. They are not being moved, but stolen.

People suck. I think they should ban bbqing for a while and ticket all offenders. Maybe that will scare some of the worst ones into being good. :/

At least some people bag their stuff. That's slightly better than leaving it all scattered.

They ticket easy/nice targets--I know several folks who have gotten tickets within the last year for having dogs off leash before nine pm at the Nethermead. They even had an undercover officer just for that!

I like the way you think Beav. But why send the e-mail to some annonymous e-mail account when you can e-mail the asshats who run this joke of an organization directly:

    Jonevan Hornsby
    [email protected]

    Shane Bennett
    [email protected]

    Aquil Stinson

  • You're so smart!! But I still won't go out with you. :P
  • Subject: Stop bashing the cops and call MIH Ventures, www.MIHicon.com

The police are limited in what they can do in this situation, and if you all want to stop the petty cop bashing, direct your unhappiness at the hosts of the party:

    MIH Ventures, http://mihventures.com

call Jonevan Hornsby, 718 622 5665 or email [email protected]

or Shane Bennet, Director, [email protected] 718 622 5665

and let them know your displeasure at the mess they left.

It looks like MIH Ventures, Jonevan Hornsby, executive director is some sort of event planner MIHicon, plus real estate management MIHestates, plus apparel business MIHapparel. http://mihventures.com Not sure they do any of these things very well, seeing the mess they left in Prospect Park. I would not trust my property or event to Jonevan Hornsby and MIH Ventures - MIHicon

one could also check out their client list, and let their clients know what a poor job they did with this event planning disaster.

    http://www.mihicon.com/iWork/index.htm

It would be wise of MIH Ventures - MIHicon http://www.mihicon.com/ to contain this PR disaster quickly, lets hope they learn from this event hosting debacle.
  • The cops could know the laws and enforce them instead of being clueless.
  • From another thread:

"What makes the lack of police presence more stark to me (and I did not see a single cop on the block, not when I was out at 11am, 3pm or 8:30pm) is having just been to the Philharmonic in the Park on Wednesday. I must have seen 50+ cops there to keep the peace among the wine-sipping, classical-music listening masses."

So you can have 50+ cops for the orchestra on a Wed. but 0 cops for that mess on a Saturday night? Makes no sense.
  • There are some serious clients on their. Harvard BS, Columbia BS, NBC...it's worth a look to see if you have any connections at these organizations.
  • interesting...cops stood around doing nothing..dog owners/walkers are doing the cleaning. people everywhere, garbage everywhere and PEPSI is sponsoring this boondoggle? seriously, we should boycott pepsi products, get the word out that they are condoning such disgusting behaviour and we won't support their products if they continue to support these type of events.
i bet this group claims it was just a picnic and they didn't know that all those people would show up so that's why they didn't get a permit.
In also think the police department should have reacted instead of standing around flirting with people. I saw one cop car pretend to be giving someone a ticket who was parked in front of a fire hydrant! yes, you heard me, PRETEND. didn't give the guys a tkt but was making believe he was writing one out...no shit. 78th precinct needs to see these pictures and we need a reply from the captain telling us what they are going to do about this....
  • oh and, thank you oppassum queen for rolling up your sleves and making the park a better place for you and me!

I think that what's going on is that the Philharmonic was a planned event expecting thousands if not tens of thousands of people. Security and such (grass mowing, early garbage pick-up) were planned for a very large crowd.

The event yesterday may not have let the park know what they were planning to do or the numbers they expected, and it may have just been much more than they expected. Either way, I think the event organizers (btw, Pepsi was a sponsor) should be held accountable.

I really have never seen so much trash in one section of the park and never so many broken bottles.

I can understand if this is the first time they had this party but on their invite they said they did it last year, 1000 people showed up and they wanted even more to show up this year. I thought that with that many people the City would make them hire clean up crews and/or security.
  • Shall I start a letter writing campaign? I rock the scathing letter.
  • just me wrote: oh and, thank you oppassum queen for rolling up your sleves and making the park a better place for you and me!
I didn't do that much. There are several folks (I think most if not all are dog owners and associated with Fido Brooklyn) who do this *every* Monday (at least during the summer). They take their dogs out for off-leash, take the dogs home, and come back to get bags and grabbers from the park volunteer office and go clean up the worst spots. One guy kind of organizes it. They are the trash warriors and the park is lucky to have them. There were tons of people out cleaning by the time I had to go (volunteers, paid employees, and maybe some community-service people). That and a huge truck.

We have some great people around here.

Oh, and just the looks on people's faces as they walked up on this was priceless. I don't know how many times I heard "holy shit!". And not one person passed without at least snapping a phone pic and some were even calling people of power that they knew.

    You just rock PERIOD 8)
I would definitely add my name to that letter.
  • You should try to post some of your photos to their Evite invitation. :)
  • According to the MIHVentures website, there is another party on July 30th. Seems like these photos should be forwarded to the Prospect Park Conservancy, NYC Parks, City Councilors, and perhaps NY State Assembly Members and State Senators. MIHventures should not be given another permit.
