  • and to the 78th precinct and park police...this is unacceptable
  • that's disgusting. Beave, let me know if you write that letter.
  • let us all know...maybe we can do it in some sort of petition form?
  • So, a search of MIHventures shows them listed at 699 Bergen St. A streetview shows this:

    http://maps.google.com/maps?oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&ie=UTF-8&q=699+bergen+street,+brooklyn,+ny&fb=1&split=1&gl=us&cid=3007982027880568407&li=lmd

Trash in front of their place, too!

Seems like these photos should be forwarded to the Prospect Park Conservancy, NYC Parks, City Councilors, and perhaps NY State Assembly Members and State Senators. MIHventures should not be given another permit.
If I looked at what you looked at on their website, it was the "future" portion which looks to not have been updated for a few years so that July 30 event is from 2006. Let's hope that's the case!

According to the Brooklyn Newspaper, they didn't get a permit this year.
  • Subject: stop the cop whining

just me wrote: interesting...cops stood around doing nothing..dog owners/walkers are doing the cleaning. people everywhere, garbage everywhere and PEPSI is sponsoring this boondoggle? seriously, we should boycott pepsi products, get the word out that they are condoning such disgusting behaviour and we won't support their products if they continue to support these type of events.
i bet this group claims it was just a picnic and they didn't know that all those people would show up so that's why they didn't get a permit.
In also think the police department should have reacted instead of standing around flirting with people. I saw one cop car pretend to be giving someone a ticket who was parked in front of a fire hydrant! yes, you heard me, PRETEND. didn't give the guys a tkt but was making believe he was writing one out...no shit. 78th precinct needs to see these pictures and we need a reply from the captain telling us what they are going to do about this....
The NYC police do not control the city parks.

you all have to stop bashing the police, they can't do everything, and if they did you would probably still complain.

if the police came in with crowd control squads, gear, and horses, you would complain about that too. You'd say the cops were violating civil rights and the right to gather in groups, blah blah blah.

The city did not know about this event, so could not staff the event. The city did know about the symphony.

Don't complain, take action. If pepsi did sponsor this, call them and tell them you are not pleased.

why don't you forward them? put down your coffee, and take action.

Individual letters/calls have more impact. Don't be shy!

Might as well include your city council person on the list of contacts
DiBlasio for some of Park Slope...

  • So where were the Park Police?
  • i'm talking about the NYC cops not responding to the motorcycles riding on the sidewalks, parked in front of hydrants in bus stops and in walkways...the cops never did a thing. that's not bashing the cops, that's making a statement. the cops were lax and unresponsive to protectin gthe public...imagine walking along a path in the park and one of those ninja bikes comes barrelling up the path and hits a kid....who should respond then? HOWEVER...I do believe the 78th precinct is responsible for the side of the park that this event took place, they're the ones who patrol the park too not just the park police

While there's no excuse for the way these people left the lawn, there's also no excuse for the constant failure of the Parks Dept to adequately supply enough trash receptacles.
They can't keep trash cans out there. I remember once a bunch of new cans went out. Within probably 2 months of the cans coming out, maybe 1 in 4 of the many we passed on our walks disappeared. When I asked various park folks and the Fido group (who donates lots of cans) I was told people steal them. They are not being moved, but stolen.

I'm actually talking about huge garbage bins, that each can hold up to about four garbage cans...like container size.

When I was at Yellowstone many years ago, I went to throw out my garbage in one of them, and a black bear was inside, just browsing for food...
  • How do you figure out who is in charge of the Park? Is it the Park's Dept or the Prospect Park Alliance?

Who tells the cops to enforce (or not enforce) the law?
  • I saw the mess this morning as I walked Rosie in the park. Here's the email I fired off followed by their addresses. I also sent an email to Bloomberg, but there's no email address, just an html form to fill out.

I have been told that you are responsible for the event in Prospect Park this past weekend. I hope you will take responsibility for the mess that was left behind. I have never seen so much garbage and trash in the park. It was disgusting. If your thinking is that it's a public park and someone else will clean it up, you are irresponsible. Please tell me what you were thinking.

  • Rosweed - let us know if you get any response.
  • I don't expect anything from the event planners. I don't expect anything from Bloomberg, either. But I find Marty's office to be very responsive to any issues.
  • Cool. I just emailed Marty, and also sent this thread to Brownstoner.
  • Hmmmm... maybe someone could find out their home addresses on White Pages and deliver the garbage to their front doors? They would probably get the message fairly quickly.
  • 699 Bergen St seems to be a good place to start (see page 1)
  • I wouldn't be so quick to think you won't hear from the mayor's office. I emailed the same address you did about jackasses parking at the hydrant on my block and got emails back from one of his staff and calls from my local precinct.

  • It looks like the Parks dept. is going to try to recover some money for the cleanup...

Its nice to know that the parks dept is at least paying attention to this (and is seemingly outraged as well!) I admit that there needs to be a serious review of the police presence and activity in the park if the activities the article sited were true- it's insane that someone will get a ticket for drinking a beer on their own stoop but this party was allowed to continue with the crazy amount of alcohol and (apparently) weed present. Don't try openly drinking a beer in a park in bedstuy, folks...the cops are all over you like flies on shit.
  • good point carmen...remember that one guy who was sitting on his stoop enjoying a nice evening w/ a cold one and he got a tkt?! no one was even cited from this poor event. there were 2 guys sitting in a white bently/rolls royce car double parked (therefore backing up traffic) outside the garfield entrance on PPW for hours. then they moved and illegally parked with dozens of motorcycles to the 3rd street entrance and took it upon themselves to park all over the st that was closed to traffic and designed only for bikes and pedestrians that couldn't even walk in because the bikes were riding along the paths, etc. one cop stood around flirting with two woman and ignored all the bikes around him. I hope marty and mike and the captain of the 78th come together to figure out how to handle this in the future cause there will be more...
oh and a big shout out to all the volunteers who spent hours cleaning up their mess....
  • Probably 1/3 of the trash was alcohol containers--gallon bottles of hard liquor, boxed wine, beer bottles (many shattered in the grass). There's no way that the drinking was not 100% obvious if they needed another reason to tame the party besides the illegal grilling. (Not that I really care if people drink in the park, but it is illegal and I know people who have gotten tickets in Brooklyn parks for having one bottle of wine). There was also plenty of evidence of illegal drug use.

The paper article says hundreds of people, but some parks people and and a couple of women who were at/adjacent to the party said it had to be thousands.

I really think it was such an impressive mess that lots of people who use the park have been calling and emailing the park, papers, and politicians.
  • ringrunner wrote: Who tells the cops to enforce (or not enforce) the law?
No one needs to tell cops not to enforce the law, it just comes naturally to them.

I doubt anyone at mihicon.com gives a shit.

And that illegal drug use left how much garbage behind?

    A few roaches? Please.

Alcohol is the problem, always has been always will be.

I'm just saying that there were many illegal activities that were probably obvious (weed, liquor, grilling in a no grilling area, no permit for >25). I probably picked up at least 50 little bags that once had weed (some still had crumb or two). That surely made a strong smell.

I still think bbqing (not all food, just cooking) should just be banned for a while. Then it's clear--doesn't matter where you are, no grilling. I think the trash and rat problem would greatly subside.

I guess I'm just tired of seeing our wonderful park trashed on Sunday and Monday mornings. I'm not just bitching about it here. I've contacted the suggested people/groups and I've helped pick up trash (as many dog owners at off-leash do, I often end up bagging and taking out trash that is appealing to and bad for our dogs).

Prospect Park is why we live in Brooklyn instead of Manhattan so I'm pretty much in favor or any means of keeping it beautiful and safe for all.
  • I know, I hear ya. We cleaned up the Berooklynian picnic and fit all the garbage in one bag which was left by a trash can.

How the parks department didn't know about this 1000 person gathering is beyond me, especially since they had a permit, supposedly.
  • Absolutely disgusting, and I couldn't believe it when I asked a cop what was going on and he said "a bad ass barbecue" standing next to 5 bikes parked in front of hydrant. who wants to bet off duty cops were part of the club?

I say we call Prospect Park Alliance and 78th Precinct
