The Parks Dept is in charge of Prospect Park. The Prospect Park Alliance is a citizens group that raises money & volunteers to support the Park. (There is NEVER enough city money to go around.) The Prospect Park administration office is in Litchfield Villa, in the Park on PPW about 5th St.
The police report to the commander of the 78th precinct, who ultimately is responsible to Police Commish Ray Kelly. The Parks Dept has no jurisdiction over the Police Dept.
I have organized dog events in city parks & am totally flummoxed at how this MIHicon group could get away with this. Complaints to the client list should get their attention. -

Just took the dog for a stroll through the drizzle and the cleaning job was pretty awesome. I'm sure there's still some food bits and broken glass in the grass, but from the sidewalk it was as if this never happened.
It was nowhere near that point when I left yesterday, but I did have to go just as the truck was arriving. I am impressed.
Also, I know there are other things happening around here but I'm glad this is getting some local press. The mess left even by the routine weekend bbq's is pretty disgusting and sometimes takes days to clean since it's not actually contained to the bbqing areas. -

I love that this issue has bubbled up. Thanks for the info.
For the past two years, my daughter's bday has fallen on the same weekend as these joker's event and we have lucked out by picking the day of the weekend that this thing doesnt fall on.
This one has me kind of fired up to make some calls, emails, letters to get this series of events shutdown. I certainly dont want to have to compete with Heatwave 10. My crew wouldnt have any place to park their strollers;)
Also, lets stop the bitching about the cops on this one or at least start a new thread. Let's focus on the real issue at hand. These assclowns clearly showed no respect for the park. -

The cops were a big part of the problem, allowing them to 'take over,' I am as annoyed with them as with the party goers who were doing what they wanted until told otherwise. Noone told them otherwise. Why the hell should we leave them out of it?!!

Oh i agree with you that there was a lack of enforcement, That's why i said new thread;) I dont think a few cops are going to go into that mess to try and end it by writing a ticket for a open container/bbq violation. They certainly arent going to mobilize the troops to escalate the situation even more.
Did anyone get hurt? As far as i can tell no. So fine, the police sat back and montiored it. Hopefully, they had a plan to deal with it if it got really out of hand. I cant speak to that...
We're talking about trash. Make them pay for it and make sure #10 doesnt happen. That's all I am saying.. -
What?! Do you know anything about tipping points, slippery slopes, etc....Guys were easily doing 60 down PPW on their motorcycles at 7 in the evening. They were riding motorcycles on the sidewalks immediately in front of police. It is not shut it down or do nothing, there are other options. And 'noone got hurt'? isn't that the point of this thread, that people can't behave this way, it's not a "victimless crime" - -I don't want to get distracted and turn on each other, but why the hell you want to leave the police out of it is beyond me.
-
Flaco - put your money where your mouth is, and start making calls if you are so riled up.
Just sayin' -
What do you think I have been doing? in addition I have spread the brooklyn paper article far and wide. I have complaints in through 311, the Mayor's office, city parks dpt, park alliance, and the local precinct. I trust that everyone complaining here is doing the same, i just didn't feel the need to report on it since there is nothing to report. I don't know why you're just implyin' otherwise.

I have no idea what you've been doing, since you didn't say anything along those lines other than "I say we all.....". It SOUNDED like you weren't doing anything other than saying what people should do without doing anything yourself. -

Thanks spartynyc, I will as well. Flexi - I'm sorry that I gave that impression, I don't see where I was "saying what people should do," I am happy the Brooklynian community was/is very actively concerned about this problem, I apologize to spartynyc that I flew off the handle about the police, touched a nerve I suppose, no idea why you're piling on though, flexi, can't say as next time I will keep you posted on who I have called

No politician or police official or Parks official will ever enforce anything, or even complain about these incidents, which are making the Park unusable, because it is, to be blunt, a race issue. They do not want to be called racist by the Al Sharptons of the world. The organizers of these events know this, and are happy to rub it in the faces of those that respect the law, their neighbors and the Park.
These groups want you to know that the Park is their own personal toilet, and nanny-nanny-boo-boo there's nothing you can do about it. Except clean up their mess for them.
They are laughing at you. -
Korla speaks truth, kemo sabe.
No one in this borough wants to be shocked by touching the third rail of racism, implied or not.
Slobs unfortunately transcend race. They're all over the park. -

So the cops are supposed to wait till someone gets hurt to do anything?

Wow, those pictures look just like Sunset Park every morning. Unfortunately, we have only the local residents to blame.
-
I was at the event. I didn't mean to attend. We went Sunday to have a BBQ and the onslaught occurred around us. The crowd was well-behaved but there were too many and I knew it would end up a trash heap. People used our big bag of garbage to throw their stuff out in because the organizers didn't bring any of their own! The cops should have simply come in and said, "Do you have a permit for the Public Address system?" When the organizers said "No" the party would have been over. No music, no party. I've been arrested for blaring a boom box too loud yet they had 120 decibel speakers blaring from 1pm until about 8pm. The cops are dopes here along with the event organizers who I hope PPA sues up the wazoo.

I gotta tell everyone that I sent an email to all of the addresses that rosweed supplied, and copied Marty on it.
This morning, I'm sitting in traffic in the BBT, my cell phone rings and it's....Marty. He told me that he was outraged at what happened and that the event was totally illegal, with no permit and that the police were caught unaware. He also told me that they were going after the organizers to make restitution to the city.
Regardless of what you think of Marty's response, the truth is that almost no other politician would pick up the phone and call a constituent. Marty's very unique in that way, and I have to admire him for that.
My wife told me I forgot to mention that dog owners are always getting ticketed for violating leash laws, but this kind of thing never gets fined. -
Yes! I hope he does it, too.
Thanks for the update, BGC!
I'll try to remember tomorrow to call his office as well. -
we were having a picnic in the park near this event when hundreds and hundreds of people started arriving. we figured they must have a permit because there were giant grills and tables with catering trays/sternos, not to mention a loud PA system. while we were there, TWICE a pickup truck was guided out ONTO the lawn by two men to drop off huge barrel grills. how did these trucks get into the park without anyone from the parks department/police department noticing? obviously someone from the parks dept on the inside looked the other way here, and so did the cops.

BINGO. Sharpton and his bullhorn are never far behind.
