C'mon, Dope. The "Lincoln Park" hint is a Google Local away!
There's a Lincoln Park in Jersey City, no?
  • Tell me it's not Jersey City.
  • Jersey City?
  • Damn you guys! beat me to it!

Now the ethical dilemna... Do I abuse my mod powers and go back and delete your posts so I can claim the carneviento gift certificate?

    Ding. Ding. Ding.

The choice was hard. My criteria was this: $800,000 max. No renovation, but must be live in ready. Must have greenspace. Must be within easy commute to the City for my wife. Townhouse, brownstone or stand alone house. No apartments.

These properties do not exist in Brooklyn anymore. A coworker of mine just bought a derelict place in Bensonhurst that the neighborhood kids had set on fire for $330000. What's left? Bushwick? Not with two little girls, my friends. I looked at a place in Clinton Hill that was $750000 -- townhouse, single family. The realtor was very concerned because the door had been bludgeoned in and fretted that he would never sell the property because it was such a basket case. I added up $200000 in repairs during a 30 minute walk through. The realtor said that the owner feels that any townhouse in any condition in Brooklyn was firmly worth at least the asking price. Right.

It was a tough call, but I just spent the afternoon and evening with the house inspector and we concluded that with the correct restoration, it'll jump in value. The lady across the street from us bought her place 3 years ago for $300000 and just sold it for $700000. All she did was paint it and replace the windows.

Another thing that moved us was Jersey City. Dope on the Slope can tell you that once you get the bug for underdog towns it is hard to shake it. Besides, my uncle owns a string of dive bars in JC and Bayonne.
  • So I guess OnEasternParkway gets the prize.

I've been working in South Brunswick, Jersey for the past 3 months. The one thing you'll need to get used to if you own an automobile is the fact that they have yet to discover a little thing we call the "left turn," not to mention the "u-turn."

Are you going to put out an honest-to-god garden in the garden state?

They grow some mightee fine 'maters there.

How old is your uncle? Did he know Louis "Red" Deutsch of Tube Bar fame?
  • I think ana.log and FLUTE are both Jersey girls! I'm surprised they haven't stepped up to defend their home state!

Joules is a South Jersey gal. I am totally mystified by jughandles ('cept ones with XXXX on the jug). We've got the tomatoes and blueberries hookup down in Atlantic County. But I am definitely putting in a herb garden most rikitik.

I should have said "owned a string." He sold them to some guy in the late 80s/early 90s and beat feet to Florida. He might know "Red." Uncle Steve is in his mid-80s. One of my earliest memories was going with my grandpa to Steve's first bar, picking up Steve and heading to Monmouth Park to put $50 on a can't miss horse that Steve got a tip on, naturally, at the bar. I think the horse came in second but paid off after a steward's inquiry. Now there's a lifestyle.

Steve and my grandfather were both at the Hindenburg crash. They went down to watch it land for the hell of it. When it went down, my grandfather said they both started running as hard as they could because no matter the cause of the crash, Hungarians get blamed for everything. heh.

Completely off topic: If you've never heard the radio broadcast of the Hindenburg disaster, you should check it out below...It's truly one of the best live news broadcasts of all time.

ON first glance, i don't see a lot of people dissing NJ on this thread that I would be required to jump in and defend it, however my standard answer to this issue is this: get a life. It's just really cliche and old to make fun of NJ and most poeple who do it have only been to the airport. If you ever visited Princeton, Sandy Hook, Cape May, the ski resorts, or the many, many other beautiful locales which make up the other 99% of the state, you would know better.

I think that making fun of a neighboring state is a time-honored tradition that's all in good fun - don't think that Jersey is special in that regard. Shit, in the Twin Cities, IA, WI, and SD are all fair game... ND would be, too, but there's really no one / nothing there to make fun of...

Little know fact from your resident Rutgers geographer: NJ has a about 1 million acres of protected lands (out of 5586560 acres) and the most progressive green energy code in the country.

Still, Brooklyn rules (Cept for the real estate market).

hrm. People search for brooklyn like they do manhattan...

While I could never leave my Brooklyn I do like Montclair and Maplewood.

Since my mom came from the Twin Cities I was careful to only make fun of Nebraska. Couldn't mock Illinois, since they have Chicago.

My step-dad was from Des Moines... we were always particularly harsh towards IA...

    ...he was such an asshat...
  • As you should be. It deserves all possible harshness. Maybe it's time for me to change my username too, come to think of it.

Can we at least make fun of Atlantic City?

There is nothing like taking the Casino Bus to my in-laws place in Margate. Nothing.
  • Everyone should go to AC once in their lives to see how a casino town should NOT be run. Then, go to Vegas and you will see what I am talking about. My grandparents used to live on Raleigh right off Vetnor in AC. Quite a difference when casinos went up and the mob moved out. AC has more window bars per house than neighborhood in NYC. The boardwalk is dirtier than Coney Island. The poverty is almost equal that of New Orleans (pre-Katrina), it's just a miserable place.

wow! I've never been but have an adoration for Vegas that I can't quite express coherently. I've often considered visiting AC but I'm always worried it will disappoint me. that said, for pure gambling awesomeness, I love casinos run by reservations (like in New Mexico) where there is no booze. it's strictly a freak show. I fit right in!
