Did you happen to drink anything right before hearing them?

Sophisticated aircraft using precision instrumentation in an attempt to decipher, once and for all, the REAL boundary between Park Slope and Windsor Terrace.

did they look for the % of homes on a given block that had both organic food and a stroller? -

I didn't hear anything last night, but I did hear something strange once a few months ago. Like a weird oscillating whistle. Almost like something falling, but the wrong pitch, and like I said it was variable too. Woke my girlfriend and I up in the night (read as: loud) and neither of us recognized it or could tell what it was. It lasted maybe 30+ seconds. Never heard it again.
Does it sound like the same sound? -
Definitely sounds like UFOs.

sometimes people race crotch rockets on the expressway late at night, i could see that being interpreted as a ufo

could be the subway workers, using airhorns to communicate with each other (for example, x blasts means "all clear the tracks, train coming" when they work late at night).

i think they use whistles, but i dunno. -
Hmm, like I said, we couldn't recognize the source of the sound, I don't think it was an air-horn, and I live several blocks from the subway.
That being said, it was a while ago and probably more importantly, it was the middle of the night so we were disoriented from being woken up, so I couldn't really nix anything reliably.
I am curious what the sound Yankee Fan heard was like, and if it was at all similar to the one I described. I had completely forgotten about it until this thread came up, and now I'm really curious! -
...the night subway workers use a variety of noisemakers, some of which are very loud.

whistles for the track workers, the horns are the trains themselves
