Juniors Cheesecake?? Not so Yummy anymore huh...

  • Unfortunately,
The person who took the photo has refused to talk about it.
As I stated before I did not take this image however the person who did posted it on facebook first. I am horrified by it, but not naive enough to think this is the only eatery in the city suffering from this kind of infestation.

The images have been picked up and splashed across many media outlets, some even putting their logos on them.
I am glad Junior's seems to be taking responsible measures to ensure this does not occur again. (a more secure cake case would probably help)

As for the photographer who seems to be taking a "no snitching" approach to this matter, which makes "perfect sense" (rolling eyes)

This matter is a concern for public health, and responsibility/ liability.
Now that I see how much attention it has garnered from the media I will make sure to keep my eyes peeled for any other instances where the safety, health and well being of the public is at risk.
Brooklynian.com will always get the exclusive.
    lol

Restaurants and bakeries this should serve as a warning, in this tech savvy day and age you cannot afford to cut corners. You never know who is watching.

    Signed,

    Rachel Rae
    the culinary watch dog!
  • I think the friendly folks
    @ brooklynian.com

owe me dinner at a non-mouse infested place. They are about to spike in the number of uniques.

    lol
  • Junior's on Flatbush has always been nasty, a glorified grimy diner.

Horrified but not surprised by that photo. I'll buy my cheesecake at the Grand Central outpost and pretend that, since it didn't sit in the Brooklyn window, it's mouse free (**lalala hands-over-ears lalala*).
  • ^after all, who's ever heard of a mouse in a train station basement?
  • ^ (runs screaming)
    :D
  • p.s. I love Juniors. I only go every couple of years now, but it's always a fun trip, and I do mean *trip*

AND the cheesecake is quality stuff. I don't like Italian-style dry and lemony cheesecake from Court St. (I don't like mouse poop either, so I hope they work it out)

Junior's (and all-night Korean BBQ places on 32nd St) used to be a great late night post-club spot for me when I was doing that kind of thing. Fun...always a fun scene between the party folks and the church folks and the everyone else that happens to be at a diner early early in the morning. I like the folks who work there - very old-school.
  • I guess the owner doesn't know the difference between mousse and mouse
  • All in all, it really is quite an adorable mouse! I'm guessing it was just there
to clean up overspill. I'm quite certain it was careful when walking by the
cakes not to bush up against them. It was just there to keep the cake case
clean. It's job is to police up all sprinkles and crumbs around but not ON
the trays. Prior to the photo being snapped the little bugger was busily
washing it's face with it's little tiny hands.
  • It's a damn good thing I never liked Junior's cheesecakes anyway...too rich for me, but the little buggers seem to have more discerning tastebuds.
  • Subject: Rachel Rae is such a LIAR!!!!

OK Rachel Rae is a damn liar, so yea she may have put it on THIS SITE but her "friend" wasnt the one who took the picture and it wasnt first posted on Facebook. I know who took the picture and I was the one who posted it FIRST on Twitter trying to create a Trending Topic called #boycottjuniors and I used the 2 pictures as proof and i have proof of it because I favorited the first time I even tweeted about it if you go to my twitter page and look through my tweets Twitter.com/SickAndTwisted6 dont let her fool you and lie to you, of course the person you know who claims they took the picture wont talk about it because they didnt take the picture so you can tell ya friend to stop lying to the people and take my picture that I POSTED on twitter down off of there facebook page because if you ask around twitter you will find the truth that @SickAndTwisted6 and @IWillCreate03 was the first people who posted the picture and knows who took it and i can even post my @'s in screen shots and show yall all when they were said to me!
  • Hey! I just saw the story about this on NY1 and it cited the Brooklynian!!!!!!

    Go Brooklynian!

whoa. . . and this is relevant because. . . ? personally, i thank rachel rae for posting it here, whoever took it or tweeted first.

i'll add here that i happen to love junior's cheesecake, although now i will have to wait a while until my short-term memory is reformatted before i go back.
  • lol @ Drew Bellz

the person who posted it on face was believed to be the person who took it. Calm your damn nerves.

As far as me being a Liar, I never said I took it, and really don't think I did anything wrong.

I asked the person to talk about it and they said they did not want to be a part of any media expose. I was quite annoyed that they wouldn't reveal any other info.
Perhaps they are the same person or perhaps they took the picture from you

Either way the point of the matter is that there was a rodent in food that was being sold.
Again, that's a public health concern.

I did not garner any fame off of this, nor was I looking for it. I seek only solutions to problems and accountability.

I am sorry if your trending topic didn't turn out the way you had hoped.

Also, if you know who took the actual photo than perhaps you can encourage them to come forward and talk to the people who matter about when the mouse was discovered.

And usually if you are trying to seek fame or recognition off of an image a watermark :) or logo does the trick!

    Let them eat cake!
  • checked out your twitter page @ Drew Bellz

I love the Stop the Violence image in the back and the quotes about kicking my door down.

    lmao...
  • Well said Rachel.
  • Drew,

You are becoming famous, but perhaps not in the way you would like.

    Go Drew go.
  • Don't you think you are all jumping to conclusions? I see a photo of a mouse in a display case. I haven't been in Junior's in a while, but display cases all look the same more or less, don't they? Does anyone have independent verification that this is Junior's? Even the Daily News says that the photos are "alleged". Is there a date on the photo? Any way of verifying that it is from this year or even this decade? I think you all should reserve judgment until there's a bit more proof. And shame on the Daily News and other news outlets for running an un-sourced story. Seriously, what is journalism coming to?
  • When it was posted on facebook the poster made the P.Diddy reference implying the Brooklyn Juniors Location.
  • sloppy journalism gives people the idea they can fake something?

    Balloon Boy :)

I think Juniors has effectively stated that the photos were legit and they are addressing the problem.
  • Regarding the local news scoops aspects of this...

Interesting how being a big topic in an active but merely local site blew up much larger than broadcasting the same info a full day earlier via the uber-huge Twitter news firehose.
  • whynot_31 wrote:

Maybe, maybe not. They merely responded to a media story by saying they'd look into it, and hire the appropriate experts to do so. I don't see anything in the Daily News quote (I didn't look at any of the other news stories) that says that Junior's acknowledges a mouse infestation. Did you? Here's their quote:

As soon as this isolated incident was brought to our attention on Sunday, we took immediate action to determine the cause," said owner Alan Rosen in a statement. "It was addressed professionally, and I can assure you the problem is being fully remediated

I think it's more a reflection of the fact that they are sensitive to media hype that can surround stories like these. Do you think the News reporter actually got up from his seat to report this? He just browsed the web, then called Junior's for a quote. It's this sort of shoddy reporting that allowed the Bush administration to get away with invading Iraq. Excuse me for going on a rant, but the state of US media is sad, and this is just another example of it. Blame declining revenues, apathetic public, whatever, but this is a terrible situation.
  • I agree the state of journalism is pathetic. This story should have never ran in all of these outlets without being verified as true. This is the age of photoshop, nothing should be taken at face value.

That said, DOH did find some mice droppings in non food areas.
    http://ny1.com/7-brooklyn-news-content/top_stories/107668/mouse-photographed-in-junior-s-cheesecake-display

...but, seriously, what food place doesn't have mice?

And one mouse does not equal "overrun"? No.
http://animalnewyork.com/2009/10/juniors-cheesecakes-overrun-by-mice/ (not a news source, but still)

Sadly, these stories get viewers ...and viewers get counted, which get advertisers. The Daily News may not have even called Juniors, she/he may have just taken it from a another source.

I agree, we move a little closer to Idiocracy (a movie everyone should watch) everyday.

Clearly a bad day to be the manager of Juniors. ...I worked in foodservice for 6 years though, and a mouse doesn't freak me out. You try to control their numbers, you never get rid of them. I'd eat at Juniors tomorrow.

    yeah, zactly ^^^ Smokin' Joe

Rachel Rae linked to @SickAndTwisted6's Twitpic. Maybe y'all know each other - she posted Saturday afternoon, and you started Tweeting this Saturday too. Maybe you're yelling at a friend of friend, Drew Bellz.

Neither of you claim to have taken the photo. You might want to be happy about RachelRae posting it here, Drew -- the picture got picked up by all those news outlets that you're excited about because they saw it on this site. The trending topic thing on Twitter is really hard to get going btw...

Anyway, I don't see a problem here. If your friend's mom that took the picture wants the credit, she can claim it. She should have gone direct to the Daily News in the first place *if that was what she wanted.
  • Can't a professional chef chime in on this BS. There are mice and bugs in EVERY kitchen in NYC. Yes a spunky creature got into the display case. Italians? ShiLanka? Who cares where the people are from the rodents don't. Mice and rats are a way of life. Go down to Atlantic ave station at 3am 10 to 1 ratio rats to people. Meatpacking district 430am bars close and the rats wake up for work! They are everywhere. I don't think this is a bad case of infestation.
  • Ewww...but then again...who knows what else we're putting into ourselves that we don't even see. I still love my Junior's cheesecake. Even Diddy eats it, and we all know that he normally only puts gold bars in his mouth.
  • I personally think its kinda douchy that WHOEVER took the photos decided to do a slanderous campaign against the restaurant without even talking to them first. Instead, they go straight to the web with the photos not even giving the proprietors a chance to address it first.

If the "photographer" spoke to the owners and said- hey, I see a little mousy! and the owners said- yea? well, he won't eat much- then I can understand the bad publicity. But, that probably wouldn't have happened, they would have addressed it right away and no one would be the wiser, giving them a fair opportunity to take care of it.

    Douchy.
