I like the Ratner exec's comment:
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/06/16/nyregion/16yards.htmlJames P. Stuckey, the Forest City executive in charge of Atlantic Yards, was lukewarm on the presentation, saying that it was "a nice thing to say that we're going to come up with five design principles but ignore the fact that there's a billion dollars of cost in infrastructure and land acquisition" associated with the project.
But wouldn't have "F**k you, MAS, you can't make me," been more succint? -
Barwick said the Society assessed Atlantic Yards using five “design criteriaâ€Â: does it “respect the existing neighborhoodsâ€Â; does it “eliminate streetsâ€Â; does it “create a real public parkâ€Â; does it “promote lively streetsâ€Â; and does it “choke†traffic.
Are "eliminate streets" and "promote lively streets" both positives??By those criteria, Atlantic Yards earned a score of 1 out of 4, according to architect and planner John West, who gave the Society’s PowerPoint presentation at Thursday night’s forum.
Weren't there FIVE design criteria? Also, I wasn't able to determine exactly WHICH ONE OF THE FIVE criteria they think FCR has met. Eliminate streets? I guess I didn't read carefully enough. But West’s presentation began ominously  showing that Atlantic Yards’ 8.7 million square feet is the equivalent of “three Empire State Buildings, 23 Williamsburgh Savings Bank buildings, or 2,200 brownstones  which is roughly the entire population of Prospect Heights.â€Â
Wow. -
Municipal Arts contends that the one criteria that FCR has met (to a degree) is the creation of lively streets. But, of course, that assessment is based on models of the project that FCR showed MAS and the press, but which the public has never had an opportunity to see.
Beats me how they can eliminate streets, design essentially private enclaves of open space, and provide access and egress for thousands of cars and still be friendly to the public.
On the other hand, 17,000 people will be exiting at the same time after games. Now, that'll be lively. -
So did anyone go?
