Best renter's insurance?

I use MetLife. 2 cats, garden apartment. So far, so good, but never had to file a claim.
I saw some other posts on this (do a search) and know that any type of pitbull mix can be a problem. Do some research before calling and letting them know your dog is a bully mix (regardless of whether it's fair, the fact is that insurance companies don't want to insure pitbull mixes) -
I have Allstate. Had to file a claim in Seattle and they were amazing (just wrote me a check). So I stayed with them when I moved to NYC.
I have a dog (see pic). -
Mpmav-how much was allstate?
-
Speak to a guy named Walter Wright at the Allstate office on 7th Ave between Garfield & 1st. He may just handle auto insurance, but he'll throw you to someone who handles renter's insurance if that's the case.
-
Um, I think it is like $340 a year. But, I don't really remember the specs of the plan.
Good investment when my last apartment was broken into and $6,000 worth of stuff stolen. -
It should not cost much. $340 sounds right to me - it might even be cheaper. I paid about $15/month, but I have USAA. Most people will never make a claim, so don't spend too much. But it is nice peace of mind.
-
plus, for most renters, it's not just "renters" insurance, but really more like property insurance. So, if you get jumped or something, your property is covered. I carry my laptop everywhere, so that's a big plus too.
-
i love USAA -- I pay $300 a year for up to $30,000 of stolen/damaged to my things whether they are in my apartment or not (ie; if my laptop is stolen on the train, it's covered) and up to $2,500 for jewelry. they are great to work with.

I use Gotham Brokerage in Manhattan http://www.gothambrokerage.com
which has worked out quite fine over the years. My policy is with Travelers. -
I own now, but when I rented I had Allstate (actually, I still do, but now it's homeowner's insurance). I never had any problem with them, they were easy to deal with, and rates were reasonable, but I never had to make a claim.
-
We also have USAA but no claims
I avoid Allstate like the plague. I've had 2 auto accidents where the other driver was at fault and insured by Allstate and they fought tooth and nail for every dime of claim. Don't know they would e any different if I was the policy holder -
I have allstate as well, just got broken into 2 weeks ago here in PS.
They have been really helpful so far. Would defenitely recommend them. -
Consumer Reports just did a review of Homeowners insurace

i have USAA, wouldn't give them up for anything

my friend got a discount on renter's insurance for having a pitbull mix - even though when he broke into his own apt the pup hid in the closet!
-
ooh yea people are talking about USAA! I love them. Whenever I'm in a group and someone pulls out a USAA credit card I get all excited.
I'll spare you the full gushing. But seriously - if you're eligible for them and haven't yet looked into using them - do it now. I do most all my banking/financial services with them and couldn't be happier. I've been hooked ever since the year they sent me a refund on my auto insurance because people didn't get in enough accidents to use up all the money they collected. Seriously.
I'm also not sure USAA will charge extra for bully breeds. They have a video on their site warning their users that "some insurance companies" might charge more for them (and advocating choosing mixed breeds instead!), but don't say if they do themselves. I also read through my policy documents and there is nothing about dogs mentioned. -
I called USAA today after going back and finding this thread and they said I had to be a member of the military to get the renters insurance. They were very nice about it.

I just called Amica, they quoted me $455.00 for $50.000 of insurance including personal identity theft but not my wife's wedding ring (that is extrea). I might call around, but I have read good things.

There are also ways for family members of military to use USAA. I got my USAA access after my grandfather (Air Force officer) shared a bank account with my mom. My mom (non-military) then received her own USAA member number and was able to open her own accounts. She shared one of those accounts with me (non-military) and I then got my own USAA number and access to their full range of services.
But yeah, you have to be related to someone in the service to use them.
And I do find their customer service always ridiculously nice. Love them! -
Subject: Geico!
We got renters insurance for our 1 bedroom garden apartment with dog through Geico. The actual insurer is Liberty Mutual. We have a car policy with Geico, so I'm not sure if that effected the rate, but we're only paying $130 per year. I would call them and get a quote as well if I were you. -

My father in-law was in the Navy so I could probably find a way to join that way, but I will probably just go with another company. But I am curious, it sounds like it was a little trouble for you to join. What was the draw? Price? Special benefits? Customer service?
The lady on the phone seemed to want me to find a way to join, but it didn't feel right. -

If he does not handle renters insurance, someone in his office probably does. Otherwise you could always just go to the renters insurance quote page and find an agent closest to you. That website is http://quote.allstate.com
I also agree with a later post, getting quotes from different places and doing research online about companies is extremely important. -

lol thats the funniest thing i read in a while. I still don't get why people don't get it. home owners get it cause its required when you buy the place. but renters should get it too. it saves them alot of grief if anything happens.

Then you qualify easy. USAA recently expanded to all military, not just officers, and there children. I am in because my wife's father was military.
Anyone can join USAA however and use some things like banking and mutual funds but you must be military or dependent to get insurance. Banking is pretty good too from what I hear -

Right -- My grandfather was in the Coast Guard so I can get USAA -- I honestly can't rave about them enough. I have banking/credit cards/insurance -- anything I can do with them, I do. They have great rates and are SO helpful. If you CAN get in, try it. -
Subject: Shopping for Renters Insurance
Many consumers don't know that if you combine your auto insurance coverage with a renter insurance policy and the same carrier, you'll qualify for a multi-policy discount. The savings can add up and even negate the entire cost of the yearly renters insurance premium. -
I am very, very happy with Amica! Use them for car and renters insurance, and I did a lot of research before hand in chosing them. They're great.

How many claims have you had? What has been your specific experience to call them great? What kind of research did you do before choosing them? -
I will also mention that as a USAA member you can get discounted car rental, very big discounts
