BROKE IN BROOKLYN (FREE STUFF/ SERVICES)
Anyone have info on free/ dirt cheap info?
We can all use some extra $ saving ideas right now. Here are a few of mine;
Steve Wildman Brill gives free foraging walks (I think year-round on good weather days)
freegan.info has great info on free (recycling) flea markets where everyone brings stuff they no longer use, and you can take whatever you need, and they have
free food parties
dumpster diving trainings and tours,
info on workshops where you can make and/or repair bikes for free, and
The Cheap Bastard's Guide To NY is a fantastic book to check out, and
Freecycle, a yahoo group, is a forum where people can give stuff away or post for things you're looking for, and its all free.
And I've gotten one penny tickets on SpirtAir.com to places like jamaica, mexico, guatemala, and $19 to Puerto Rico.
Brooklyn Legal Aid gives pro bono legal assistance, including helping people to Apply for SSI/ SSD
PBRC (Public Benefits Resource Center are advocates who help (and fight for) people applying for (and fair hearings) public assistance, including welfare, ebt food stamps, medicaid/ medicare, etc, AND they are a fantastic resource for absolutley anything you might need like glasses, free/ low cost/ and sliding scale doctors and other services
And 3rd Root Community Center in Bed Stuy I think gives a free acupuncture and (reiki sometimes) community day once a month for people in recovery 12 step programs but have a sliding scale from $18-40 for acupunture and yoga classes weekly
Launch Pad will be opening soon on Franklin Ave (near Park Place I think) and dont ask me to explain what they are, its a community center but its not really , a performance space, sort of, a place for artists, space for groups & for people to hang out, and possibly a barter group and a bunch of other stuff, but you have to contact the owner because its diifficult to explain exactly what the space IS, but it sounds really cool. And free, (but they really really need donations)
OH, and most importantly, there is a free Women's Writing Group very informal, all genres and skill levels, not a workshop where you can learn writing skills but a place to get feedback and support and inspiration and just talk about fears and dreams and ideas about writing, and to meet your neighbors. For now meetings are held on Classon Avenue near st marks, 2 streets away from the shuttle train at park place, monday nights from 6-8pm, but hopefully we will be meeting at the new space on franklin when it opens (LaunchPad)
And of course, we can't forget The Brooklyn Museum's First Saturday event (check out their website of you've been living in a cave for the past few years)
i think the Heart of Brooklyn Free Trolley operates year-round
Any other ideas, anyone?

a little fact-checking...
Brill charges for his tours, unless that's changed.
Third Root, while completely awesome and using a sliding scale fee structure, is not anywhere near Bed-Stuy. Unless of course there's a second place called that...

I have never actually seen the "Heart of Brooklyn" trolley... does it actually exist? I see signs and I'm out an about the park etc.

Thank you, Pitu. I thought Brill's tour was free or by donation. I didn't go with him, I went on another, similar foraging walk but don't remember the info.
And thanks, Jeffrey. I have heard about Brokelyn but not theskint, thank you! -
I was about to mention Brokelyn and the Skint.

and cheap ass stuart's guides to san fransisco and nyc - http://brokeassstuart.com/
really really free markets in sunset park and manhattan - you can find them on facebook for updates
there is a group that does a swap in bed stuy semi regularly (i think i've seen it posted on bed stuy blog before. generally neighborhood blogs tend to post a lot of fun free stuff. i regularly check greenpointers, bedstuyblog, ilovefranklinave, newyorkshitty, and of course this site)
3rd ward had an amazing swap last year and i think it is supposed to be bi-annual (someone walked away with a soundboard!). the last one was promoted by bust magazine and called Score! I ended up with a ton of amazing vegan cook books, jewelry, a couple of vintage dresses and a couple of dvds and managed to get rid of martini glasses, clothes that were too big, and more.
i also do some organic couponing that can result in free/really cheap stuff (like free hummus and 34c bag of stacy's pita chips) - there are sites as well as awesome coupon books at some stores.
to go along with dumpstering you can check out the frugan living website where a person posts their finds -i only do it in the summer. my lazy ass just coupons in the winter b/c bike + snow = emergency room bill. not just for food though - dorms in may are awesome.
also there are free stuff websites where you can get free magazine subscriptions (vegetarian times, rachel ray, spin magazine, marie claire - big ones and not weird industry only), trial and full size items, etc
for going out to eat there is restaurants.com - having an 80% off special right now (make sure you read the fine print)
times out ny sometimes emails about free movies - i remember seeing murderball for free through them. bluestockings has some great speakers by donation and i think a free feminist book club. local colleges websites can also be checked for cool free programs/speakers/etc.
the craigslist free page is worth it sometimes - it did result in my getting my princess.

YES SCORE was amazing!!!
I googled but could not find any info on the next one. Does anyone know? Do they have a mailing list (i signed up for one but never received any mail) or a facebook page? -
i actually work with the Heart of Brooklyn occasionally during the First Saturday events - the scoop as i know it on the trolley is that, for now, it's operating on the evenings of First Saturdays only from 5-10p. basically it's a way to support local business in the area when there's obviously going to be a ton of people around that may not be familiar.
the trolley gives families and museum-goers a tour of the prospect heights neighborhood, and you can hop on-hop off anywhere along the route to visit restaurants, bars, and stores (some with First Saturday discounts). -
PMing about score b/c i don't think they have posted it publicly so i dont' want to jump the gun

^that kitty is gorgeous!

Thanks Saram.
There is a free flea market similar to SCORE. Sunday, March 28th, 3-7 Judson Memorial Church basement in Washington Sq Park S. But double check info on www.freegan.info and get on their list.
I got some cool clothes, books and free acupunture, which was great bc I'd always wanted to try it but was too scared, and since then I found 3rd Root in Brooklyn which has a sliding scale. -
Also, 3rd Root is having free community acupuncture next Saturday 3/27. Sometimes they have free Reiki that day, too. I'm not sure if it's open to everyone or only people in recovery, but contact them at

Just for clarification - this is the Manhattan Really Really Free Market if googled or something. I find it hit and miss- like a giant flea market, so go earlier than later.

I have only tried it once, but my friend and I were deeply disappointed to find that the bar was not even OPEN AT ALL when we showed up, much less having an open bar or even a happy hour!
I do not trust the info on that site. Always double-check it before showing up.
