BROKE IN BROOKLYN (FREE STUFF/ SERVICES)

Anyone have info on free/ dirt cheap info?
We can all use some extra $ saving ideas right now. Here are a few of mine;

Steve Wildman Brill gives free foraging walks (I think year-round on good weather days)

freegan.info has great info on free (recycling) flea markets where everyone brings stuff they no longer use, and you can take whatever you need, and they have

free food parties

dumpster diving trainings and tours,

info on workshops where you can make and/or repair bikes for free, and

The Cheap Bastard's Guide To NY is a fantastic book to check out, and

Freecycle, a yahoo group, is a forum where people can give stuff away or post for things you're looking for, and its all free.

And I've gotten one penny tickets on SpirtAir.com to places like jamaica, mexico, guatemala, and $19 to Puerto Rico.

Brooklyn Legal Aid gives pro bono legal assistance, including helping people to Apply for SSI/ SSD

PBRC (Public Benefits Resource Center are advocates who help (and fight for) people applying for (and fair hearings) public assistance, including welfare, ebt food stamps, medicaid/ medicare, etc, AND they are a fantastic resource for absolutley anything you might need like glasses, free/ low cost/ and sliding scale doctors and other services

And 3rd Root Community Center in Bed Stuy I think gives a free acupuncture and (reiki sometimes) community day once a month for people in recovery 12 step programs but have a sliding scale from $18-40 for acupunture and yoga classes weekly

Launch Pad will be opening soon on Franklin Ave (near Park Place I think) and dont ask me to explain what they are, its a community center but its not really , a performance space, sort of, a place for artists, space for groups & for people to hang out, and possibly a barter group and a bunch of other stuff, but you have to contact the owner because its diifficult to explain exactly what the space IS, but it sounds really cool. And free, (but they really really need donations)

OH, and most importantly, there is a free Women's Writing Group very informal, all genres and skill levels, not a workshop where you can learn writing skills but a place to get feedback and support and inspiration and just talk about fears and dreams and ideas about writing, and to meet your neighbors. For now meetings are held on Classon Avenue near st marks, 2 streets away from the shuttle train at park place, monday nights from 6-8pm, but hopefully we will be meeting at the new space on franklin when it opens (LaunchPad)

And of course, we can't forget The Brooklyn Museum's First Saturday event (check out their website of you've been living in a cave for the past few years)

i think the Heart of Brooklyn Free Trolley operates year-round
