DA's sex ed warning befuddles Wis. teachers, kids

By TODD RICHMOND (AP) – 4 hours ago

MAUSTON, Wis. — Mike Taake has taught sex education for 30 years, and he says he knows what doesn't work: just telling kids to wait.

The Mauston High School health teacher has used abstinence-only and comprehensive curriculums, and he said students need all the information they can get about sex to make the best choices. But teaching them about contraceptives could land him and other teachers in court.

Juneau County District Attorney Scott Southworth last month sent a letter to area school districts warning that health teachers who tell students how to put on a condom or take birth-control pills could face criminal charges. The warning has left many teachers, school administrators and parents flabbergasted.

read more about it here :p just for you noobers.

  • Scary.

There are Republicans like this across the land.
  • This is just a continuation of things like the Scopes Monkey Trial... small minded people that get their way. Very scary.

(As a side note -- I'm very impressed by your restrained post. You told me your thoughts, shared a little of the article, and provided the link if we wanted to read more... so proud! )

For someone who I consider thoughtful in their responses your answer here shows not only an intellectual laziness, but shows you didn't read the article.
Southworth, the Republican, said he doesn't want to drag teachers into court but feels he was ethically responsible for warning them of the new law's potential consequences. He urged the school districts to refrain from offering sex education courses until the Legislature repeals the law.

"Listen, there's a real problem with the law," he said. "I didn't pick the fight. The Legislature dumped it in my lap."
As you can read, he admits it's a legal problem that needs to be solved by the Wisconsin legislature. As an officer of the court he is required to uphold the law. nothing more, nothing less.

Maybe armchair needs to paste the whole thing.
  • Come to think of it, as typical of most of bloggers on Brooklynian you self censor. As soon as you get to a line that confirms your prejudices, you stop reading, smug and safe knowing that all is right or in this case left with the world.
  • NO matter how wrong it is.
  • Honestly armchair, for someone who purports to be neither left or right your post shows a knee jerk pandering to the powers that be.

  • funny thing about people on extremes of either side always accuse me of being on the other side. they can't see how far they are into their own little dimensions.

The extremes in this case are those that know how to read and those that don't.

So not to be humiliated, both sides accuse you of being on the other side and by the way, what dimension are you from?

That's true, I didn't read this whole one b/c I read a different one earlier in the day that didn't mention the DA's defense that 'he's just trying to give a warning about the law'.

    Hmm. I also read this:
"To be frank, I can't follow exactly what he's trying to get at," Geske said. "If a teacher is educating a student pursuant to state law ... I don't see how under any examination (that) could be criminal."
So perhaps it's not as simple as this innocent DA objectively applying the law? I guess it's possible a public office holder could use a legal interpretation to push his/her philosophical agenda, or that of his/her electoral base?

This situation certainly bears watching, and we'll see if it falls in with the many instances across the country where evangelical conservatives try to limit sex education in a misguided attempt to prevent teens from sexual contact.
  • Good times:
Starting in the fall, the new law requires schools that have sex education programs to tell students how to use condoms and other contraceptives. Juneau County District Attorney Scott Southworth said such education encourages sex among children, which is illegal, and could lead to charges against teachers.

The new law "promotes the sexualization - and sexual assault - of our children," Southworth wrote in a March 24 letter to officials in five school districts. He urged the districts to suspend their sex education programs and transfer their curriculum on anatomy to a science course.

"Forcing our schools to instruct children on how to utilize contraceptives encourages our children to engage in sexual behavior, whether as a victim or an offender," he wrote. "It is akin to teaching children about alcohol use, then instructing them on how to make mixed alcoholic drinks."
  • Quickly, you site 2 sources that you don't link.
An article you had read earlier in the day and a letter (no link available) the DA wrote on March 24th that corroborate your point. Need I remind you that you are a stickler for siting sources, in the copyright/plagiarism thread you wanted examples of copyright case law which I obliged.

What is peculiar about this whole thing is the two quotes that seem to contradict armchairs assertion the the DA wants to prosecute teachers.
"I'm not looking to charge any teachers," he said. "I've got enough work to do."
    and
Southworth said he doesn't want to drag teachers into court but feels he was ethically responsible for warning them of the new law's potential consequences. He urged the school districts to refrain from offering sex education courses until the Legislature repeals the law.

"Listen, there's a real problem with the law," he said. "I didn't pick the fight. The Legislature dumped it in my lap."
I think a very strict interpretation of the law could leave some exposure for teachers. A very, very strict interpretation which in likelihood would be thrown out or completely ignored by a more liberal leaning DA, not even liberal probably even right of center!

Having said that I will admit it is likely the DA wants it both ways. A stickler for law and order and also to be popular among the typical voters that might propel him to higher office. An argument I've heard recently about DAs and AGs running for future office is that they should be prevented from doing so for at least 5 years. Something that would keep Cuomo from grandstanding in our state.
