No, he was kicked out of the bar, and not allowed back for as long as they remember he was 86ed.
It seems there was a dispute with the bartender because he was chatting and watching TV and disappearing rather than serving drinks, and things got a little heated. So now when I hang out with this guy, 12th St. is off the list, which is too bad since it's close and I like the place... -
is it the cute boy with the tats and piercings? because he's adorable (i'm just saying...)

I don't know which particular bartender it was, but I have found them all to be decent enough. If I had to guess, I'd say my friend had a point to start off with but then took the whole thing way too personal-like. They've probably forgotten it by now (it was about a year ago) but he has counter-86'd them and won't go there on principle. -
Jacques Torres does not make good chocolate. He makes crap.
And he's an asshole taboot. -

That is so untrue. What's your beef with Jacques Torres? It can't really be the chocolate, because that's awesome.
And he's an asshole taboot. -
During the week 12th St. opens at 4 or 5 last time I checked. I have no idea why they setup the wireless.
I haven't been there in a while, kinda over it, but I seem to go through phases with it. -

I was just in the WT Connecticut Muffins and they had a sign saying they now have wireless. So that might work for you. But -- they were playing Billy Joel -- loud.
Any suggestions? I'm in WT, so South Slope or N. Slope on 7th would work (but 4th Ave. and/or 5th + too far North are too far) -

they always kinda sorta did. i mean, there was always some signal or another to piggy back onto (which is wrong, i know.) and the music there is loud... but yummy snacks.

if terrace got wireless it would rock. or the 10th street tea lounge -
Coco room and chocolate bar seem about the same to me, I frequent both, depending on what part of the nabe I'm in. The one on 7th (can't keep track of which is which) is like 3 or 4 blocks from my house, so I go there more. My g/f and I bring scrabble (they have their own but you never know if someone will be using it) and sit there for a while, drink, eat and be merry. It's a good way to keep the g/f happy.
My friend asked someone at the chocolate room if they had another restaurant on (7th? or 5th? like I said, I'm not sure which is which) and they got REALLY mad. Seriously though, both have chocolate, both have wine, both have comfy atmosphere... only in NYC would a place like this be open in the first place, much alone two places in the same name!
Now I'm hungry. -
Subject: Cocoa Bar vs. Chocolate Room
I've been to Cocoa Bar at least 10 times and Chocolate Room about 5.
Cocoa Bar- cool lounge vibe, very spacious and relaxing patio, but not always clean. The pillows are dirty and I've been there more than a couple times when there were dirty glasses and plates sitting on table for over half an hour. I go because I am in love with their Spicy Hot Chocolate (it's not on their menu get it with a homemade marshmallow on top). The other chocolate and coffe drinks are okay and the chocolates themselves are good, not great. The marshmallows I do rave about and the desserts are pretty good too. There is one boy with dark hair and glasses that works there (I think maybe a manager of some sort) who can be nasty. We got lectured by him twice. #1 for moving the furniture and #2 for ordering our drinks to go during tabel service hours. I have also heard him talk down to associates. But, he can be helpful in ordering. I will continue to go here.
Chocolate Room- the service here is excellent both dining in or getting chocolate to go, the staff has always been attentive and informative. The wine is yummy, I am a sucker for anything that is sweet. I thought I could convince my boyfriend he would be a fan of dessert wine, but he was not sold. They typically give you a free mini scoop of chocolate sorbet which is decadent and thumbs up. I found it a bit pricey, $30 for 2 glasses of wine (they are the small port wine glasses) and 3 pieces of chocolate. I would definately go back. -

All the desserts I've had at Cocoa Bar have been dry, stale and over priced to afford the 7th Ave. rents. The atmosphere is a bit like starbucks! Plus they don't have homemade ice cream. This weekend TCR did a spiced Valrhona cake with orange ice cream...to die for..much better seating for a dessert cafe...
It is unfair to bash a business that you don't like and at the same time promotes a similar type business. Very suspicious! If you have had a bad experience with a particular business, just don't go back, but please don't come on these boards and denigrate businesses.
but we all do agree that Lobo sucks, right?
Lobo is the worst. I can't agree more. It literally made me sick. -

It can't be worse than Mr. Tips' experience at the now defunct Sam's BBQ and Vegetarian.

Really? We've be to Lobo about 3x, once dinner 2x brunch and have always been pleased. It was always crowded as well.
Looking forward to trying the Chocolate Room even though the Cocoa Bar is closer. I won't tolerate rude behavior.street shooter wrote:

the only thing I have to say about Lobo is this: request white cheese/non "queso". if you don't, you get melted velveeta/american cheese. -
Subject: Cocoa Bar on 7th Ave - Worst Management Ever!!!!!
Seriously the WORST management ever at that joint! No lie, the spot would actually be a really good place under different sercumstances. They are extremely rude to customers, I have personally never had a direct experience but I did witness the other day that little manager wearing the glasses go completely bizzirk on a young lady who was using the internet.
He first mentioned that she had to purchase something if she was going to surf the net, at which point she made a purchase without a problem. What followed is the worst customer service I have ever witnessed. The manager came back with the tea and slammed it on the table right next to her and continued to rant and rave about the internet policy AFTER she made a purchase!! The customer took it well while the manager completely LOST IT! I mean, I couldn't believe what I was seeing?!?! I almost wanted to intervene on behalf of the young lady cause it was soo over the top!
When the lady went to pay at the register, she requested to see the manager.. At which point the erratic man stated that he WAS in fact the manager.. She then proceeded to ask for the owners name, which he was about to write down & then out of nowhere he told her to get out of the Cocoa Bar never to return with her business.. It was the craziest thing I have ever seen & I felt soo bad for the young girl that had to endure that ridicule over basically nothing.. You better believe I will never be visiting that place again & I would strongly advise to do the same!! -

I've been in there plenty, and I really doubt the veracity of this story. I've never been treated anything but politely by the staff including the owner who I met early on.

I don't doubt it. I was there once and the elecricity went out (it was hot, I think they blew a fuse) and the managers got all flustered and catty with each other. There was also a bit too much self-importance going on with some of the staff (unfortunately, not too uncommon on coffee houses these days) -
I went to Cocoa Bar last week...I was in a short line and ordered but some bitchy queen behind the counter was rudely asking who was next. I had the dark Iced Chocolatte which was good but not great for an over $5.00 latte...and I could tell that it was quality chocolate powder they were using but it was totaly gritty. I prefer Chocolate Room hands down...it was definitely more of a chill vibe. The brownie ala mode was delish and the Pinot Grigio. And the waitress was super friendly.

I have to agree with you Stacy (and not because you have such a cool name
). My son and I go to the Chocolate Room and they have great service and it is consistent. Whenever Brandon and I go he happens to get a little "freebie" (last night was a "full" serving of their chocolate gellato - not the "taste" size). Oh and by the way their special last night was an orgasmic chocolate bannana cake with a crispy peanut butter bottom topped with fresh carmelized bannanas, chocolate syrup, whipped cream and a scoop of coffee ice cream mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. -
personally, I think the cocoa bar is fine
the help has always been nice
the coffee is fine (although I have to remember that I don't like the cinnamon latte, at all)
if they do have a renegade manager, I'm sure his days will be numbered
when they first opened, the owner was there every night
and she seemed nice and friendly and to really want the establishment to work
that she's no longer there every moment of every day is no doubt better for her and I'm sure her integrity is still in place
I tend to avoid it at night (I don't see any reason to pay a tip to have table service bring me a tea)
but, if on a date, it seem a nice place to have some wine
perhaps sit outside
I'm glad it's there
btw, is Lobo the new southern style/tex mex place on 5th?
if so, I've been there 4 times and have loved it
their chicken fried steak may not qualify as "world famous", but it was good
their tex-mex (I had some combo) was very good
and their creamed corn is a revelation (now that's cinnamon used right)
Howdy, Stranger!
