Anyone need someone to help them once in a while?
Hello There,
First of all, I apologize to anyone who is offended by this post. That is not my intention at all.
I am one of those long-time Park Slopers who has found themselves recently, and suddenly, unemployed (among other things). To make matters worse for me, I am also a former homeowner (on PPW) who has had to sell their home at a loss, so yes - I am both jobless and homeless. As a result, you can now add penniless to that sentence - the worst imaginable trifecta. Not ever thinking I'd find myself in such a spot, and having been so for more than two months now, I am both still shocked and completely embarrassed.
Having looked through all of the usual job listings, websites and employment opportunities and having no success - none at all (I'm apparently not even a adequate panhandler - I've been told more than once that I'm not convincing enough!) - I am growing truly, increasingly petrified about my future, both immediate and longer-term.
There are, of course, many other details to this story, as there always are, and I'm happy to share them with anyone who wants to hear them over a cup of coffee or some other form of much-needed nourishment. But I'm writing this in the hopes that I can offer some other type of service.
I am resourceful (not to mention completely free of any negative vices or any other undesirable trait), and incredibly adept at picking up new skills with minimal teaching. In exchange for one or a few dollars, a little food, a modern-day version of a subway token or some other helpful resource, I would be both proud and pleased to provide my brain and/or body to help someone accomplish a task. Be it in an office, a home, or some other place where work is to be done, I am ready to help.
Alternatively, if you are looking for someone to assist in your workplace for a few days, weeks or months, and think that I'd be an appropriate fit, well, that'd be a present-day dream fulfilled.
Thank you for taking the time to read this, and if you'd like to reach me, please email me at [email protected]
If you'd like to meet up, tell me when and where. Chances are fairly good that I'm free.

For any business owners needing some extra help who are reading this - no matter where you are - I'd love to be that person. I come cheap!
(can you tell I'm desperate?)

Do you have a van? Can you do heavy labor or construction? If you head over to Home depot or Lowe's parking lot you might be able to get work with a contractor or worker that needs an extra hand. Are you good at painting? Put up a craigslist ad (obviously you have means to get online) and promote low cost painting and repair jobs.
Take care and best wishes. -
Thanks, Mamacita. I have ads up on CL, and will give the Lowe's idea a shot.
-
I saw a "drivers wanted" sign in the window of a car service the other day. I don't remember exactly, but it was definitely on 7th Ave. somewhere between 1st and 9th St.
-
Yes, it is on 7th.... drivers, with car. Thanks.

Truly upset for your situation.
I would suggest that you might want to register with some of the parishes in Bay Ridge. Bay Ridge has many elderly people who are looking for anyone from a full-time home attendant to ad hoc general home repair to weekly errand/chore assistance. You might also want to post with some of the senior citizen groups and centers.
Hope it works out! -
Domino, thank you so much for the idea. It is something I will surely look into. I assume that I do so by visiting these parishes, so I will try to save up enough to take the train there (that's how bad I am at begging for money from strangers - can't even drum up a few bucks!). In the meantime, I will investigate the more local senior centers.
This is the sort of gig that's up my alley... I'd prefer to help others while getting help myself. Thank you again. -
You can also go online and check with Catholic Charities; some of the local parishes are online and you can check via net before making the schlepp. There might be something available to YOU on a temporary assistance basis as well.

I sent you an email, but others might also be interested in this charity

Its a great deal (income regardless) -
I need help hanging some art work and there's an AC that needs to come up one flight. We could meet at the Little Purity on 12th street sometime. Does that work for you? Oh, and what do you charge ?
-
I could meet you tomorrow afternoon... email me, and we can discuss further. I can definitely help you with both tasks.
(sorry it took me so long to reply) -
Hey oldsloper... haven't heard from you yet, but I'm available for you. Just PM or email me at the address in the first post of this thread.
-
Sorry I've been remiss.
Could you meet at the Little Purity on 7th Ave. and 12th St. on Saturday at 11:am? -
Subject: wishing you good luck...
I understand how 'easy' and unexpected it can be to get close to the edge. I wish you luck. I think you've gotten some good ideas and you will get through this!
If you have a PayPal and maybe a few people can send you a few $5's just to get you through not even having a small amt of cash...
maybe (geez, I wish I felt this would happen ...) one of the copy shops could let you print up some flyers advertising what you are looking to do to be paid back later. I think a lot of people need people to do general 'stuff' for them. -
I know very little about PayPal, and I've never been one to ask people for money, but you're right... I have none, it would help, and I can do little without it.
I will read up on it a bit. Thanks for the thoughts.
And oldsloper- please email me at the address below. I need to set up a time, but that one that you mention doesn't work, unfortunately. I am sure we can find one that does, though. -
What time works for you?
-
I want to thank those of you who have reached out and helped me. I can't quantify how valuable your help has been to me, but every gesture has helped make my life easier to handle, and that, to me, means so much. I can only hope that I've been helpful to you, as well.
-
I am going to be moving on one day between June 28-30. I'm not sure which day yet, depends on what is most convenient for work. But I could use some help if you are still available. I am a student and can only pay around $50 or so.
As of now there is no heavy lifting of furniture but there's a *chance* there will be a futon/mattress. -
I am available, and would love to help. I'm broke, homeless AND jobless, so every bit helps.
Send me a PM or email, and we can continue to converse that way. -
I need help handing out flyers for my business. PM me.
-
Sorry about your situation. I may need some light carpentry (sanding/carrying stuff) help over the next few weeks. Do you have any references?
PM me if you're interested.
Are you staying in a shelter or with friends? Maybe put up a free wordpress blog with a link to paypal and offer your services.
-G -
samiam and brooklynmodern, PMs sent to both of you.
and thank you for keeping me in mind. being months into this homeless / jobless situation has started to really drag me down, emotionally. the only thing that has injected positivity and sanity into my day is knowing that i've been able to be helpful to others. -
If paypal doesn't work for you, why don't you simply post the address where you are staying? I'd be really happy to send along a twenty, during this difficult time for you--just to help you while you're getting on your feet. Others might do so too. You'd actually be doing me a service in that I haven't donated to anything locally this year, and I'd really like to do so?
-
also, in case you (or anyone who is uninsured in the nabe) needs any emergency medical care during this time, you can always walk in to the sliding-scale/free clinic in park slope (not sure if they're open weekends tho). here is the website:

OP:
I asked you via email but maybe you didn't see it- what industry did you work in? You mentioned that you owned a business with 20 employees...I have many friends who are recruiters and have worked in a pretty wide range on industries myself. I might be able to find you a connection for a job. -
lostlookingforlife, I never got your PM.
Try again. -
Samiam and brooklynmodern, I just re-sent you PMs, because I hadn't heard from either of you. Please reply and let me know of its success.
Carmen, I will send you a PM now, as well.
ParkSloperite, thanks for that lead on medical help. I don't need it right now, but I had a friend I work with at the place I volunteer at, and he will be going there in the coming days. Without your input, we'd still be searching for a lead in that department, so much appreciated.
I need to investigate the paypal thing a little more before I decide on that. It makes me uncomfortable to advertise to people and simply ask for money. I want to be able to provide something to folks in exchange for payment or donations of another kind. And although I have gotten a little work from those gracious enough to extend a hand (THANK YOU!), it's so difficult to earn enough to care for myself in a hygenic manner (Priority #1), find a safe place to rest my head and mind (#2), and have something nourishing once a day. But lately, it has worked out that I could do a variation of #1 and #3 (#2 is tough) each day. I couldn't have done it without the help of you guys. You have saved me from much worse fates, ones that have swirled, very realistically, around this head of mine from time to time. Not a great place to be, I can assure you.
THANK YOU VERY VERY MUCH. You have restored my faith in my neighbors. It is far too easy to dismiss one another these days, to go around with the belief that we are all out solely for ourselves and our own, and your gestures towards me have proven, in a very real way, otherwise. I am well aware of how difficult it is for all of us these days, financially, which makes your gestures all the more valuable and cherished here.
Fondly,
Will -
Subject: Re: Anyone need someone to help them once in a while?
Hi again,
Sorry to repost, but I'm hoping that there's more people who can use my services. I've helped a few people, and they have helped me, but with a few responses out of over 2300 views of this thread, I'm hoping that there's more that I can help out there.
As my references, as well as those who I've helped through this posting can tell you, I am a personable, resourceful person who is not a scam artist or one looking for something for nothing. I am just someone who has lost everything - my home that I owned, my job, and my savings (I am more than happy to share my story with anyone who needs my services). I can meet and work any day from this Sunday on.
Again, I'm sorry to repost, but I'm hurting. More than I ever imagined. I'm humiliated, and eager to rid myself of this situation. But I cannot do it alone.
Thank you for reading,
Will -
I'd post on craigslist. The 2300 "views" are not unique individuals. There is really only a small amount of people that check the boards regularly, and most of us click on the same link multiple times to see an update or just out of curiosity -even if it does not relate to them at all. Not to burst your bubble, and all.
-
To be totally fair, and not to be nasty, quite a few people have asked you what your work experience entails and no one seems to have gotten an answer (myself included.) I apologize if you're emails/PMs have been lost, but you seem to be behaving a bit oddly for someone who is honestly looking for work. If this is *not* an honest plea, it's really low to pray on people's good graces this way.
As I've said over email and here- I have a LOT of contacts in both the professional and "non-professional" (service, odd-job) industries and I can say with some confidence that I could find you *something* to do for cash, however youve made it exceedingly difficult to do so. I'm hoping that this is not some sort of scam, although it's difficult to imagine what kind of information you could possibly be gleaning from posting something like this, especially since any sort of "research" based on a fairly close-knit, small, local internet community could be extremely biased and therefor totally useless for reference.
If you really want work, you're doing a poor job following up.
