Police Action in Prospect Park on Wednesday 7/26

Does anyone know what all the police were doing in PP on Wednesday evening? I saw three guys running and screaming, about 20 police vehicles, two ambulances, and the helicopter.

  • I was wondering the same thing. Damn helicopter was circling for a half hour.
  • I saw it too & have no clue. I was eager to walk on by quickly.
  • I was running in the park around 7:00 PM and saw the ambulances. No idea what it was about. The only injury I saw was a woman who had fallen off a scooter and had bloody knees.

I ran along the road that cuts through the middle of the park and there were two cars there that appeared to have been in a serious accident. But no one was near them, whatever had happened was over. There were fallen trees around them and it looked like one of the cars had been crushed. It was just bizarre, I couldn't make sense of it.
  • There was a burglary (attempted?) on 2nd Street, between PPW and 8th Avenue, and apparently, the cops were chasing the burglars.
  • attempted robbery, i spoke with a female officer as they were chasing down the suspect.
  • some guys stole a bag from the park belonging to soccer players. The players ran after the guys when one of the crooks brandished a gun. The players called police who boxed them in on 1st street and then caught them hiding in the back of some homes.
  • It was definetly an attempted robbery - started in PP and then the "perp" scrambled down through the backyards between the homes on 2nd Street and 1st heading toward 8th Ave. About 50 cops, three squad cars, lots of undercovers, a hovering helicopter, etc ended up on the street ands sidewalk and in the garbage area of my building around 7:30PM last night.

This was all to arrest one 15-yr-old black kid who looked scared shitless. The disproportinate amount of force was due to one cop spraining his ankle in the chase and a grossly overweight cop collapsing with chest pains and being taken away by ambulance. As I'm sure you all know, once you radio in "cop down" it turns out cops in droves.

All of this unfolded just as two of friends from San Francisco rounded the corner to come into my building. Their first thought was that a movie was being filmed ;-).
  • I don't have a problem with that amount of cops going after someone allegedly brandishing a gun in my neighborhood.

I only wish they did that across the city, it would certainly deter a lot of crimes me thinks.
  • dang i was hoping to read the perp got a good ole fashion beating oh wells.

Well dude, before you start in on an ecce homo style portrait of this young credit to society, do recall that he could have saved himself and his presumably soiled briefs a lot of trouble by, like, not being a knucklehead.

As for the officer I hope he's doing well.

    The ol' wood shampoo, eh?
  • The 2 posts immediately above are mine. I thought I was logged in.
  • Me and a couple of friends got mugged at gunpoint on the UES right after 9/11 and the show of police force was impressive. If that's what it took to get the dumb little shit than so be it, anyone brandishing a gun should do some jail time, that's a whole different level of crazy shit than just "kid stuff".

Yeah, but unfortunately once the guy was caught, I'm sure that with the one cop with chest pain and one with a sprained ankle, there were 48 cops standing around the ER collecting overtime and obstructing other patients' care. :x
  • Thanks for the explanation. I guess I was seeing the soccer players chase the kids down. The cop who sprained his ankle sort let his moped fall to the road when he saw the suspects then he tried jumping a wall. The cops gave this one kid a pretty good whack with his retractable billy club thing.

I go the park nearly every night with my dog and it's reassuring to see the police repsonse given all the muggings in the park this summer.
  • actually they were standing around high-fiving each other just like high school jocks at a football game. I know I feel safer now.

Stop being so upset that this kid got bagged. As for the "disproportionate" response, you hear this stuff on the radio and if you don't have anything else doing, you show up. It's not like the dispatcher or the other cops or whoever is going to get and there and be like, "Um, yeah, there's this kid we're after and he grabbed something that wasn't his and showed a piece when confronted. Now, please guys, I only want 4 officers MAX showing up because we don't want to make a big scene that will upset the locals - especially because the handgun appeared to be of small caliber and the kid is probably pretty scared so I don't think there's anything too much to worry about. So let's decide - who's coming? I need four people, remember...oh, and if we do catch this fellow without being shot at, please don't act happy or anything - we're likely witnessing the tragedy of another young life wasted on crime. Jesus, did you guys decide who's coming yet? Keefer, McHugh, stop arguing. Keefer, you can come next time..."
  • you should consider screenwriting
  • Ha! I probably have toyed with the idea after seeing a movie like, say, The Fantastic Four and realizing that at the very least I couldn't do worse...

hell i'll high five them too and ask them if i could have some fun with the kid.
  • how humane of you - an historically common suggestion - post arrest beating. lovely.

have you ever thought about moving to a high crime area and give these kids some hope of how humanity should act.

you'll probably join my boat faster.
  • matter of fact I have done that in my life. want to compare past addresses? want to compare past efforts?

why not just whip out the penis and see who is bigger :P.
  • Whew - I was geting worried that the level of discussion would never return to this level. Thanks for re-grounding me.
  • to quote someone from another board.

"As far as I am concerned you can give the cops complete carte blanche to rid those POS from the planet. "

+1, I came up from the subway, and around and around it went, right over my apartment!

you'd prefer no cops came, or the cops came, solved the crime and had some high fives. I'd give them a high five too. Eveytime the go out after some punk doushe bag with a gun, they risk their lives.

    Props to the NYPD
  • Also, high-fives after an arrest seem a lot better than catching the punk ass, stripping him of his gun and THEN beating the Sh*t out of him.

If all the cops did was high five, I think that's a good testament to the NYPD.

    More props.
