How safe is Classon bet. Prospect St. Marks? (edited) — Brooklynian

How safe is Classon bet. Prospect St. Marks? (edited)

Hi,
I know this question has been asked before but I wanted to specify a little in terms of the area I am looking to move to.
I'm young female professional & Asian, thinking of moving to Classon Ave (Between Prospect Pl & St. Marks) - how safe is the area at night?? Should I keep looking at other areas.
Looking to move in a couple of days - appreciate anyone who can give an honest answer ASAP!

Thanks!

MOD NOTE: Moved to correct neighborhood and edited title

  • Best advice... walk around there at night and get a feel for it. If you don't feel safe don't do it. I would look at Greenpoint personally.
  • You'll live, just don't get into any 'disagreements' with the locals.

If everyone followed the "if you don't feel safe don't do it" credo, most newcomers to the city would have high-tailed it back home.

Greenpoint's ok. We almost bought a condo there, and we're very glad we didn't in retrospect.

Also, some blocks are nicer than others, in terms of the neighbors and the vibe. That goes for here as much as it does for other neighborhoods, so in that regard at least part of CTK's advice is worth heeding.
  • Theres a nice gentlemen who hangs out on the corner of St Marks and Classon gesturing to himself, he'd probably be the best one to ask about the area.

Yea never mind all the nice well to do folks who live there. You're a very positive dude
  • How safe do you need it to be? It meets the Jane Jacobs standard in that there are always people around on that block and a 24 hour bodega at the corner of Classon & Prospect Place. I'm a petite, white female (not sure if I look "professional") who lives nearby and I have never had any problems walking around the neighborhood, but after 10 pm at night, I limit my walks to the bodega or to the "S" train. Having the "S" nearby is a really nice option for coming home late at night. Since everyone is piling off together, it's quite safe.

All of that said, it is an urban environment. I make the same suggestion to you as I would any young woman living in the City: take a self-defense class so you'll be able to handle any issues that come up. Whether you live in Crown Heights, Greenpoint, or the UES, I'd still make the same suggestion. Awareness of your environment (taught in these classes) goes a long way.

Also, if you decide to move into our neighborhood, please say hello to me and your neighbors (a lot of whom have lived here a long time). Besides encouraging and sustaining community, there's a direct benefit to you as well: neighbors look out for each other.
  • I live around the corner. Dangerous. I have to dodge dog shit on the sidewalk every day.

Amen! This is great advice. Take it.
  • I lived there i think its been 3 years now since I moved

I moved cause I got mugged I had been living in the area for 2-3 years prior to being mugged.

i lived at 698 classon between st marks/prospect place.

I never really had an issue once in while somebody in the bodega would open there mouth about something stupid about people moving in to the area.

I know the locals have been living there for soooo many years but so what really so what it sucks you get priced out but that is that nature of the beast it sucks but its life.

I got mugged a week before xmas as i was putting my key in to the door of my building its was 8pm. There where a few people walking around since it was so early nobody did anything. I played football and wrestled in high school so I was able to fight free for long enough ring every buzzer in the building people finally came out.

I still live in PH but haven't been back to the block it makes me sick even the cops where dicks no report made they mademe feel like shite for living in the neighborhood whatever

as you can see i'm still pissed about it

I love PH not sure what is considered PH when i lived there it was crown heights Washington Ave being the border.

I lived in Harlem for a while like about 3 years before moving to BK and we had tons of new comers moving in the area I lived on 137 and riverside and nobody gave 3 shites that new people where moving in to the area but in parts of PH/crown heights its an issue

    Huh?

People please don't dissuade a potentially nice new person from moving into the neighborhood. The more good people around the more things will improve. The area is fine, it's New York City....

like I said I love PH I still live in the area

but it was pretty traumatic so i haven't been back to that block

your right it was my fault

you must have been there one of the people i could see in the corner of my eye walking by as i got beat

    nice!

Did one of the assailants pull the stick out of your ass and beat you with it?

Look, if you're not smug and you're not stupid, you'll be just fine. Each and every person in my building has been in the neighborhood between 2 and 6 years. Against all odds, we've avoided muggings and random beatdowns even though we are the very symbol of gentrification on the block.
  • Excuse me for being a bit sensitive about being mugged

I'm glad nobody in your building has been a victim

But sometimes it's just about bad luck

It seems everytime someone reports a crime on here they get bashed

    I don't understand that logic

Maybe your trying to be funny but it's not funny to people that have gone through the same experimce I had.

    I haven't posted here since
07 for that reason my last post was about being mugged
  • I, too, was mugged in this general area, but that was in the early 90s and the area has improved a lot since then. Classon and Franklin have gotten a fair amount of yuppie amenities over the past 5-6 years and the crime rate, while still an issue, has declined over time. One thing you may have to deal with are quality-of-life issues, namely loud music and other noise complaints. Aside from that, I'd say give the neighborhood a try.
  • Obligatory MOD NOTE:

C'mon folks...let's do our best to observe site rules and please keep the conversation nice and neighborly...
  • I don't see what the problem is with a woman posting her story on being a victim of a Crime on a thread directly asking about the safety of a certain area. No one she be Robbed period. I don't see the need to blame the victim of a crime, you should be allowed to walk around your neighborhood without being afraid of been victimized. Had she been Raped would it be any different?

    Oh, that's funny.
  • Let's get back on track and be helpful in regards to the original OP's question
  • In a nutshell, in my experience it is better than you could tell from reading this board, and getting better every day.

After some consideration, I've decided that I should re-word, or at least elaborate upon, my statement. Does one, "bring it upon themselves?" No, and it wasn't my intent to imply that. At the same time, you need to take some responsibility in that you left yourself open to it.

Is using a shitty lock on your bike asking for it to be stolen? Is leaving something of value on your car seat asking for your window to be broken? Is traipsing, or even cowing through the neighborhood, oblivious to your surroundings, asking to be mugged? The answer in each instance is "No," but at the same time there is a responsibility on your part to not leave yourself open to this sort of thing. This neighborhood and this block are no different than any other area in NYC, in that regard. It would be lovely if we lived in a world where we could smile rainbows and fart butterflies, but that's just not reality.

    Horrible experience.

    Very sad.

I am sorry for the loss of your feeling of safety.

All you have to do to get mugged is be at the wrong place at the wrong time. The only "responsibility" a victim can take is accepting the risks of living in a relatively dangerous neighborhood.

That said, as far as the OP is concerned, I don't think the risk in that area is high enough to warrant not checking places out. That area has a lot of foot traffic and is occupied by a lot of "young professionals". I was there for 2 years and have friends who live there and love it.
  • it's safe. i'll protect you if you want.
  • Ladies,
If you're raped on Classon and you had on a mini-dress, Whyfi offers you no sympathy. It is at least partially your fault.

What, are you a ventriloquist? Keep your thoughts and words out of my mouth. Stop being such a pussy, Mr Avatar.
  • MHA, play nice, you are flamebaiting via inflammatory strawmen.

WhyFi, 99% of the time I would say the victim of a mugging in CH/PH couldn't have done much to stop it. Be a little considerate + empathetic.
