  • Interesting ... to add to MHA's anecdote about a price increase at Nam's, I've noticed over the past couple of months that they are now selling produce that is on the edge of rotten. I didn't know that beets could get so soft! They are charging the same prices they always did for it though. Very disappointing.

I guess if enough people feel the way tsarina does (happy to buy it "at any price they charge"), maybe a higher prices/lower quality strategy could work for the owners. Personally, I'm sensitive on both counts, price & freshness. I didn't take those beets home.

On the other hand, the small grocery on the corner of Franklin/Eastern Pkwy by the train station has stepped it up. They are now selling fresh produce - at much lower prices than Nam's - although it is also a bit wilty and the selection is smaller. Still, for those of us who didn't move here to pay LES prices, maybe it will turn out to be a good alternative to a revamped Nam's?

  • I didnt get the impression from tsarina's statement that she's willing to pay any price for rotten produce.

It's fairly common for bodega produce to get wilty in fall and winter months. They don't move volumes like supermarkets, and it's self-reinforcing -- things don't sell, they get less fresh, they get sold even less, and get restocked less.
