I just want you guys to know I've been listening to this conversation, and I'm fascinated, truly.

Who are you and why are you fascinated by us (aside from the obvious - our wit, brains, looks, etc.)?

T'was me. I guess I wasn't logged in. I'm actually telling some of your dating stories on dates. Not as my own of course. All my dates are fabulous, and I never have trouble meeting the right people. :P

Ha - right! I'm telling THAT one on my next date

Actually, I have a 2nd date coming up. What do you guys think is a good 2nd date? Everyone always focuses on the 1st and 3rd. The 2nd gets no respect. I think the 2nd should be an outdoorsy date myself.

Been too nice NOT to be outside... but too early for a picnic, no? Maybe 3rd or 4th?! Something fun. Go for a horse ride. Or feed the fish at the Japanese pond at the BBG.

    Do something exceptional.

    Retreat.

    Coney Island.

I'm a big fan of go-cart racing (but I get a wee bit competitive at it - just ask the 55 year old man I got into a showdown with last time  )

i don't know... if she's in any way self-conscious this might not be the swellest idea.

Are you self-conscious to go to CI? Of what? I don't mean swimming and bikinis....I mean squirt-the-clown games, walking on the boardwalk and maybe racing some cars.

Good ideas all. I think we're gonna leave the city actually. Maybe go to Rockefeller State park with the dogs.

i'd be self conscious at go-carts, but i don't know what i'm doing there. the rest i'd be fine.
  • Oooh! I have a good one for you, Steve!

If this is a longer, in-the-daytime kind of thing, try packing a picnic lunch and going to Snug Harbor on Staten Island sometime! It's this 130-acre park that used to be a retirement village for "old and worn out seamen." So there are lots of really cool old houses and buildings. It's also home to the borough's botanical garden and children's museum, and there's also a maritime museum, at least one restaurant, and a bunch of gardens and fountains. The best one is the Chinese Scholar's Garden, which is *gorgeous* and a great picnic/makeout spot. Well, I know it's a great picnic spot -- I was there with friends, but I assume it would be a great makeout spot. I swear, every time you turn a corner there you find another breathtaking scene in front of you.

    Chinese Scholar's Garden, Snug Harbor

    Love it.

And there's also a huuuuge sculpture of the very famous end-of-WWII nurse grope, or at least there was last summer.

To get there, you take the Staten Island ferry and then take the S40 bus (about 10-minute ride). Best if you let the bus driver know that you want to get off at Snug Harbor, if you haven't been there before and don't know when to hit the bell thingy, because you could easily pass it before you know it. And go earlyish in the day, because stuff there starts closing up around 5 or 6pm.

    Some linkage...

I really think it's probably one of the prettiest, most romantic places in the city (along with the Brooklyn Promenade and the Cloisters). The ferry ride is a nice bonus too.
  • I once went on a 2nd date to CI (my one and only trip to CI, incidentally). during that date, the boy revealed his cheapness and anti-semitism. also some racism. it was a very telling date, and I'm glad we went so I could learn all of these awful things about him. but I was also really glad to get home and don't think I'll ever be comfortable on another early-in-the-process date to CI.

See, that's why I like the CI date - shows you A LOT about who you are with - better sooner than later, no?
  • Last night I got another number. I'm gonna start this as my new business, but I don't quite know what the angle is going to be :P

well, yeah, except I didn't really want to go on a date like that.

to be completely honest, the date started very poorly:

we were on the Q train on the way to CI. we were sitting in the 3 seat portion (I was next to the doors) and he was sitting in the middle seat. a crazy lady was sprawled in the 2 seats next to us - the 2 seats being perpendicular to our 3 seats. anyway, she was eating fried chicken (disgusting habit on the train) and throwing the bones on the floor. then she started muttering about the fuckin' white people on the train. well. I was the only person on the train with pale skin so she was CLEARLY talking about me.

let me interrupt my own story and say that if someone were, say, insanely talking shit about black people in that same situation, I would have grabbed this guy's hand and said "hey, let's change seats" and dragged him off to another part of the train.

back to the story, the woman continued ranting and started punctuating her racist diatribe by flinging bits of fried chicken shrapnel at the floor near our feet. I was feeling a bit disconcerted and would have moved were I alone. on a date, I felt like I was testing this guy out to see just how date-like he'd be in that situation. he turned to me finally and said "is this making you uncomfortable?" the woman was ranting so loudly at that point I barely heard him.

in any case, I would have been best served had I immediately gotten off of the train and gone home. unfortunately, I decided to let him prove his lameness a few more times during the afternoon.
