Filthy block party. — Brooklynian

Filthy block party.

downwardpuppy
edited November -1 in Park Slope

Yesterday there was a block closure for some sort of block festival. It was nice and lots of people were in attendance. The children seemed to revel in the limited rides and the adults were all cordial. It was a wonderful event up until it ended.

Why do people seem intent on not cleaning up after themselves. After all was said and done this little block shin-dig produced quite a but of refuse and it seemed that the organizers were not interested in cleaning up after themselves. It was a slap to the face of the local residents.

Is this not the guidelines of attaining a street closure permit? I am a firm believer that if you are hosting a large event then you need to leave that area the same way you found it. It was totally unacceptable that no one bothered hauling away the large bags of refuse left behind. The streets were littered with wrappings and bottles. DISGUSTING!

A BIG THUMBS DOWN TO THE EVENT SPONSORS WHO HELD THIS BLOCK CLOSURE PARTY AND DID NOT PICK UP AFTER THEMSELVES!

  • Downward Puppy, You are not being very specific. Where was this block party that you are referring to? Was it on Franklin Avenue between Sterling and Park Place? Because if that's the block you are referring to, I can assure you that the block was rendered in as clean a state as is possible, and this cleanup started 5 minutes before the function's end, and concluded for nearly two hours after. If anything, this block party was one of the best ever held in all of Brooklyn, 5 years straight. It's organized by the proprietors of About Time on Franklin Avenue, and they ensure that the concomitant refuse generated is always cleaned up.

  • Merely sweeping refuse under cars is not cleaning up after oneself. Why don't these people try hosing down the streets for a change? What angers me more is the fact that they make so much residual garbage that the garbage bgs are left behind to clutter the sidewalks. It is sunday you know and these bags are still there. Frankly it is an eyesore to teh community. Maybe next time teh organizers of this event will think ahead and pay a carting service to haul their refuse bags. Better yet, why don't they try hiring a mini dumpster instead.

i will be voicing my grievances at the next community board meeting. The police department must tighten down on the rules before allowing these block closures to happen. With any luck they will hold the organizers of this event responsible and remember them for the next next time they apply for a permit(2012).

  • Puppy let me tell you my take. On the corner just before reaching Lincoln on Franklin some buttplug put his or her couch to the curb nowhere near trash day. Around the corner 2 more soiled seating cesspools, walk a little further just across the shuttle tracks a homemade bed..or bunk bed setup complete w mattresses. No "X" or bedbug markings on anything. Just a 3rd world style with no regard for anybody else.

I personall saw the skinny guy from the ice cream place sweeping and cleaning up w a half dozen other people getting busy to sort out some of the mess from kids acting like kids. yes it was a little messy during and after but compared to the adult trash all over the block, come on man it's nothing .

PS as a dog owner I police and pick up my dogs every turd.If you want to go on a trash crusade or bitch session start with wing eaters. The mountains of chicken bones and trash on the area streets are both dirty and disgusting. I march over piles of chicken debris in every direction daily. Don't belly ache about kids running around and discarding a cotton candy napkin or popsicle stick. Walk w me any morning and try and dodge bottles whole and broken and enough chicken bones that would make Tyson or McDonalds blush

  • Cat, you just don't get it do you? You just don't get it. We are suppose to lead by example. If some nitwits decide to throw their household goods on the curb on the wrong day then so be it. They have to live with it in the long run but who are we to add to the mess that is already there. We are suppose to show them that we do not live like animals. We are suppose to be the shining example that perhaps makes them think twice about living in squalor. Unfortunately the organizers of this event failed on so many levels. How can you run an event and then not be bothered to clean after yourselves properly? I too saw the mattress and kids being kids I only cringed when they flipped it flat and started to bounce on it. Lord only knows if this thing was infested by bedbugs or not. Eventually it was flipped back on its side but then again why was it not removed in the first place before the event. Would it have hurt the organizers to even invest in a mini dumpster to make sure the place was spotless before and after the event? As for the chicken bones, who gives a crap about that. You are really nit picking when it comes to complaining about refuse. Here I am talking about all out dirt consisting of cans bottles wrappings and the such and all you can muster up is a complaint about the chicken bones. AMAZING! You say I am belly aching about large bags of garbage blocking the sidewalk and yet you sit here and make yourself look foolish complaining about biodegradable chicken bones. Like I said...YOU JUST DON'T GET IT!

  • oh silly puppy. First your ecology is a bit skewed. Bedbugs need a host to live any length of time. Tossing a chair, pillow, cushion, couch or bed that infested is selfish, period. If you have a problem chalk it up to bad luck and begin the process, don't toss your shit on the unsuspecting and hope that they figure out about the pests by walking by..bad form by the assholes who do it.

Chicken bones are biomass?? are phucking kidding me? Tell that to the pet owners that have them lodged in different parts of their pets digestive tract. Put on your bio-litter hat chickenman. Tossing any food in a plastic bag or styro container is bad form by child or adult. The rats and other rodents that cause asthma don't wait for the food source to degrade they enjoy it while it's fresh and yummy. Ask any of the area kids to "deal with it" while their health is compromised by rats and roaches.

I ma not here to have an internet duel with you, your point is valid I get it, the kids got things dirtier than the adults could and can keep up with,,examples gone wrong.

Tossing toxic things to the curb is still different in my mind than a bunch of spent water balloons and some temp litter from children. You can really turn it up and bake me now with your outrage of the little fuckers messing up the street When a super rat or roach crawls in bed next to you I hope his breath smells like chicken instead of cotton candy. remember that the organizers of the kids day were still cleaning today when I got sushi from Pine Tree so your blame window is closing fast.

mattresses and box springs must be wrapped in plastic by law even for dogs Mr.Puppy

probably lots of local and world wide web places for you to get knowledge of roach and rat effects on the health of humans. If you go deep and hard as I know you should look at the rates for kids in Brooklyn and the Bronx. Think twice before chuckin' your happy meal box on the ground thanks. Those kids didn't miss you at the fest. Everytime I see a kid walking or doing anything outside I will think that you don't care if they have to crunch down on a chicken bone while walking to and in the park. By any measuer you are an expert in biowaste

  • Downward Puppy, I'm a bit confused. Don't you live in Park Slope? What were you doing in CH policing the clean up of the Kids Day?

  • Dearest cat you obviously know nothing about Bedbugs. Entomology is obviously not you forte. Since you need some educating here is a tidbit you did not know about bedbugs and the discarded mattresses. The best way to dispose of a mattress is to put it within a plastic bed cover that can easily be found for as little as 5 dollars. Bedbugs do not need a host to survive. You are presuming that bedbugs are some form of symbiotic life form and I assure you your conclusions are erroneous. Secondly you know nothing about biodegradable refuse. Yes, bones are biodegradable. Hellooooooo!

Cat, you are correct about having an unnecessary duel. It is not called for but please if you are going to argue your point then at least know what you are speaking about. Cat do us all a favor and stop lashing outward and look inward. I am addressing the event and not the people who live in the community. It is not fair to attack them when in fact it was the event hosters who did not bother to cart away the refuse generated by the event. Like I said, simple planning could have avoided the filth left behind. Simply sweeping refuse into a bag and leaving it there blocking the sidewalk is not enough. Better yet, the clean up job was amateur at best and could have been done better.

Homeowner, I do not police anything. I am here venting like so many others come to do. The filth left behind just got to me that is all.

  • Ah, but if you indeed live in Park Slope, why were you in Crown Heights for this occasion, and why were you there afterwards?

  • Booklaw, you can assume all you want but since this is not a court of law hence all questions can be answered with a yes and no simultaneously but then again I do not know what your line of questioning has to do with the price of milk in Taiwan. I am a citizen of the United States of American the last time I checked it was not a crime to walk or live in any part of this country, city , town or neighborhood. Whether I live on Franklin Ave is irrelevant. What is more important is the filth left behind by a block party.

Wow, I love the law types, they always think their verbiage will scare someone into admitting something.

  • What is relevant is just how full of poop you are and how little anything you say can be trusted.

I strongly suspect you are a troll, and that your tenure on these boards will be very limited. I, and the other mods, will be watching you very carefully.

  • Now I am a troll for pointing out the obvious. So be it. If the truth hurts then kill the messenger. NICE! If there is anything you will learn about me is that I give it as good as I get it. So if you don't want sass then please don't give it. Better yet, know what you are talking about before engaging me in some friendly banter.

    Thank you.

  • This is not at at all friendly banter.

  • Not friendly banter? Really? And you are a lawyer and you find this discussion vulgar and offensive. Where are the cuss words and threats to make this anything but friendly. I harbor no ill will to you, Cat or any other poster. The only anger and disdain I harbor is for the filth of the streets. Let's face it the streets of our neighborhood could be cleaner. Don't you agree? Other than that, am I missing something? If not then thank you for your cander.

  • booklaw wrote: Ah, but if you indeed live in Park Slope, why were you in Crown Heights for this occasion, and why were you there afterwards?-

Good questions indeed. I would think that those who dislike dirty streets would encourage the people who organized the CH fair to organize more events.

I think the street was cleaner today (Sunday) than it was on Friday (before the event). For the right price, I bet the organizers in CH would be willing to organize an event in the Slope.

  • "our neighborhood"? Which is "our" neighborhood?

  • Downward Puppy and LillithofArc have suspiciously similar tones...same person?

In any case, I am always impressed by the fact that the Kids' Day organizers leave our block cleaner than it was before. Four years in a row. Great event! Thanks for hosting it again, and for sweeping my stoop :)

  • Yes, I was impressed by the event and all the kids had fun. The organizers have gone above and beyond to create a great event for this community. AND they used their own money and money donated by other shops and organizations to benefit the children. That is a big deal in these economic times.

It is extremely easy to kick back in doggs computer chair and criticize, and even to suggest that they spend even more money to get a dumpster(!!)

    I smell a troll.

  • tsarina and ridonkulus-

It is as if he thinks the fair was filled with food venders, creating large amounts of litter.

...when instead the fair had no vendors of any kind.

Yes, it does make me feel downwardpuppy, lilith, and Victor share many things in common, and shouldn't be taken seriously.

  • Walked down Franklin yesterday and didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. It was early evening and people had started putting trash out for normal pickups, and one of the shops was even out hosing down the sidewalk because some liquid was coming out of a garbage bag and they didn't want it to smell in the heat. All in all the street appeared generally clean. Didn't see any evidence of overwhelming trash or leftover filth from the prior day.

  • This thread has more garbage then whatever the fuck block party DP is referring to.

What a steaming pile of horrendous misinformation, confusion and mod threats.

  • The problem is this: Lately there are many new users that are actually the same person, you can tell by tone, grammar, and spelling. This person has nothing better to do than have a long threaded conversation with themselves. It's actually very strange.

I wish there was a way to have the user's IP address posted with each posting, it would solve this problem. I don't think this new user is smart enough to figure out and use IP spoofing techniques. There is other Bulletin Board/ Forum software that have this feature.

  • It's actually very strange

Not to mention sad and wasteful.... especially if this person has a job.

  • It strikes me as hilarious how so many people refuse to see past their very noses. No one is coming here and trashing the event. In all actuality it was a nice gesture to throw an event for the children of this part of town.At least on this point your heart was in the right place and I commend the sponsors for this. What I am not condoning is the fact that after the event all the trash bags were just left there piled up on the sidewalk blocking the mobility of the residents who live there. THAT WAS JUST WRONG! I simply suggested that a better job be done and what has transpired is a form of Brooklynian Inquisition. How dare I even mention that truth. HOW DARE I! Suddenly a simple recommendation and spot on observation has made me public enemy #1 on a forum full of people suffering of hubris. I have no doubt if this was any other country people like myself would have been tracked down and flogged for daring to insult the sponsors of this event. Thank god this is not the USSR of old.

My observations and recommendations still stand. A better job could have been done with the refuse. Simply put it could have been carted away or placed in a rented mini-dumpster....PERIOD! All these points will be brought up at the next community board meeting where upon the event sponsors will be held to a higher standard. At least I can rest easy knowing that a permit will not be issued in 2012 unless the event sponsors can cart away their refuse. THIS I WILL MAKE SURE OF!
