You should probably just move. You came to a neighborhood, as did I, where many things existed way before you came here. For you to "freak out" and contemplate requesting more police presence is ridiculous. As eastbloc has said, you're not a blip on anyones radar. I think the block could use someone who wants to make a difference here, not someone who's gonna buy groceries, hide in their apartment and call the precinct for more police coverage. Break your lease.
end rant.
And how would you suggest I "make a difference?" I think given the fact I'm new to the area and all of this is going is a little disconcerting. So I think I have the right to be concerned.
I think the rest of you are probably right it's probably not going to be all that bad. Heck, the parade it's self might just be fun.
-
Wow. Wow! If you move to this neighborhood and you freak out that badly about the parade, you *should* move - so someone who can appreciate the positive elements of this weekend can have your apartment.

BEDFORD-STUYVESANT — As preparations and food vendors filled Eastern Parkway preparing for Monday's enormous West Indian Day Parade, blocks away gunfire broke out Sunday afternoon.
A man was shot in the hand at 1919 Eastern Parkway at 2:20 p.m., about eight blocks from where the parade is set to take place, near Ralph Avenue and Eastern Parkway.
The victim was rushed to Brookdale Hospital and in stable condition Sunday, police said.
A suspect was taken into custody near Eastern Parkway and Herkimer Street, but an investigation was ongoing, police said.

So far at least off Franklin where we live, things appear to be very quiet compared to last year. No street parties spilling into the streets at all. Just a few people playing music out of their cars and having a good time.
-
Concern troll is very, very concerned.
-
Regardless of which set of stairs one uses at the EP/Museum stop, there are police at the top of the stairs.
Among other things, they are looking at waistbands and gait for signs that the pedestrian may be carrying a handgun to tonight's J'ouvert celebration.
The food vendors have also begun to arrive for tomorrow's parade.
-
Just got home from running errands (who knew that the Swatch store in Times Square - ew - both fixes watches for free and is open until 1am?!) and the neighborhood seems so quiet!
I talked with some neighbors and they said that they were bored-no one is throwing good backyard parties this year apparently. From my overhearing of younger people (my age rather than my neighbors of the next generation up) on the subway, they had the same complaints - no one seems to be throwing parties this year. Not sure if it's a fear of safety, a concern of increased police presence, or just a coincidence, but it seems really quiet out there today.
Honestly, my most annoying part of the day - full of loud youths, smoking pot, and public drinking - was on my 4 train ride from the UES to Midtown and then from Midtown to Franklin Avenue -- full of kids coming from the Electric Zoo rave/party/festival thing on Randall's Island. What an incredibly obnoxious subway ride tonight! But yes....Crown Heights seems the quietest I can remember for Labor Day Weekend.
-
I suspect that tonight's rain showers may put a damper on J'ouvert.

This conversation occurred between whynot_31 and a vendor who was idly waiting by a table which would sell watermelon and pineapple slices:
WN: You think we will get a full house?
Vendor: I hope so.
WN: If you sell all your pineapples and watermelon, how much do you make today?
V: 2 - 3k
WN: Profit?
V: Nah, gross.
WN: I hope a lot of it is profit.
V: A lot of it will be.
WN: I hope everyone is hungry. Good luck
Needless to say, the outfits being worn today are also a major source of revenue for lots of shops. This firm is reportedly one of the biggest ones: https://www.facebook.com/FreaksNy

If interested, you can hear live radio police broadcasts from NYPD Special Operations; they respond to major police and fire events citywide.
In addition to the above, they just broadcast a report of Officers in need of assistance at St. Johns and Utica.
Go to http://scanct.com/
...then click on NYPD SOD.
So far, this weekend has been much more calm than in years past. Attendance may have been a factor.

Those who work for the media are now starting getting their version of the day in:
The NYPD assigned Mr. Williams two officers to prevent a re-occurrence of last year's um, "confusion":

NY1 wrote: All the sights and sounds of the West Indies filled the streets of Brooklyn Monday for the 45th annual West Indian American Day Parade and Carnival.
About two million people lined the route along Eastern Parkway in Crown Heights and many participants wore elaborate feathered costumes and danced for up to three hours straight.
Crowds were playing music, dancing and waving flags of Caribbean nations before the parade even started and some onlookers have been partying since Sunday night.
"I think it's fun. Everybody should do it at least once," said a carnival dancer sporting a feathered headdress.
"It's the freedom of just being able to dance down the street," said another carnival participant sporting a headdress.
Vendors were selling traditional West Indian food, including jerk chicken, oxtail, curry goat and roti.
"I'm having a great time. My family is from the Caribbean, this is part of our heritage. I have a great year, every year," said Brooklyn Councilman Jumaane Williams.
"I've never seen the parade. I feel like it's going to be an exciting parade. I hear there's going to be costumes, floats. I've never been to something this big," said the current Miss Jamaica, Deanna Robins.
This year's theme was "Unity, History and Culture," as 2012 marks 50 years of independence for two West Indian nations, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago.

Unconfirmed report of an additional incident (shooting or stabbing, nature of incident not yet known) at St. Johns and Schenectady between 20:30 and 21:00. Two people injured. EMS and police on scene.
-
An apparent helicopter search in progress for 20 minutes now overhead. Very annoying.
-
Eastbloc, based on my knowledge of your address, you are hearing a helicopter that is related to a killing that just took place (approximately 21:10) at EP and Bedford. This incident is believed to be separate to the earlier 18:16 incident at EP and Bedford. 1 person killed.
So far, my count is 3 people killed in
CH between Franklin and Utica since 6 PM....but the news is rapidly evolving/devolving
-
Don't think that's a search. Copters have been out since at least 6pm. My cats were in the backyard freaking out every time one flew overhead while we were BBQing. I think they've been doing crowd control/air support all evening.
-
That helicopter has been flying over CH since at least 11am.

The Post reports on the post parade violence:
Violence erupted hours after the West Indian Day Parade ended in Brooklyn this evening — leaving two dead and two others injured, authorities said.
A 26-year-old man was stabbed in the neck around 6:30 p.m. in front of Sing Wah Kitchen on St. Johns Place near Utica Avenue — two blocks from the parade route on Eastern Parkway.
The victim was rushed to Kings County Hospital where he died.
A suspect was taken into custody at the scene, cops said.
About 30 minutes earlier, a 27-year-old man was also knifed in the neck at Bedford Avenue and Eastern Parkway, cops said. He also died at Kings County.
And a man and a woman were both shot in the hip around 5:15 p.m. on Eastern Parkway near New York Avenue, cops said.
“The young lady was dancing in the street and there was loud music coming from the truck,” said one witness.
“At first she thought she got stabbed. But when she pulled up her clothes and looked at the wound, she realized she was shot and she freaked a little bit.
“She wasn’t hurt badly. She was able to walk over and speak to the cop and the ambulance came and took her away on the truck.
“It happened very quickly and nobody heard the shot,” the witness said.
The Post is reporting two dead (see above). The DN is reporting the same.
My source is reporting 2 additional persons likely to die, after the above stories were published:
1 at EP and Bedford
1 Schenectady and St Johns...CH between Franklin and Utica seems to have had four killings in less than 4 hours.
-
22:06 Scanner reporting shots fired at St Marks and Brooklyn Ave, suspect in hoodie fled...
Also, MNS (via Gothamist) reporting:

9/3/2012 10:08 p.m.Note: All of New York City seems to be having violent night, but I am focusing on crimes that occur near Eastern Parkway, so we can see how much of spike we get on the day of the parade, and the night after the parade.
-
I'm pretty sure this shot in The Post is of the bloody aftermath of the stabbing at Bedford and EP.
How does a parade that wants to attract and retain families and corporate sponsors deal with such an image?

In addition to the Post and DN, the NYT is presently running a story that appears not to include any of the violence that happened after 7 PM, so it is also reporting two murders:
The other two deaths I allude to above remain unconfirmed.
NEW YORK (WABC) -- It was a deadly night in Brooklyn that included gunfire, knives, and bottles.
Celebrations at the West Indian Day Parade turned bloody and two men are dead.
By the time the 26-year-old stabbing victim was rushed to the hospital from St. John's Place it was too late.
He was pronounced dead at King County Hospital.
Another man, 27, was stabbed along Eastern Parkway by Bedford Avenue and was rushed to hospital in critical condition, but the doctors could not save him.
Indeed stretched along the parade route there was dark red evidence of the outbreaks of violence and the chaos that followed.
Shoes dropped as crowds ran and pushed for cover.
What began with dazzling costumes, mouthwatering foods, and a festive salute to their Caribbean culture, ended according to police with shootings, 2 fatal stabbings, and bottles thrown.
Once emergency crews tended to the victims and police disbursed the crowds, an army of cleanup crews came in to remove the mountain of garbage washed up on the curbs of Eastern Parkway.
All this as celebrators tried to savor what had been a day of dancing in the sun.
So far, police have arrested one man for one of the fatal stabbings.
The other killing and other assaults remain unsolved.

I went and didn't get shot or stabbed!

Glad to hear it cremate!
When looked at statistically, you were clearly in the majority.

The separate incidents took place after the parade along Eastern Parkway in Crown Heights had ended Monday.
Gabriel Hernandez of Brooklyn was arrested and charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon in connection with the fatal stabbing of a 26-year-old man on St. John's Place.
It wasn't immediately known if the 21-year-old suspect had a lawyer.
The victim's name was withheld pending family notification.
In the second incident, a 27-year-old man identified as Leandre Mallinckrodt, of Monroe, N.Y., was killed at Eastern Parkway and Bedford Avenue. The investigation is continuing.
