Loud booming sounds north of Sterling Place around 9 pm?
About five minutes ago, I heard a series of loud booms in the distance. It sounded kind of like fireworks, or thunder -- or explosions far off. I saw someone across the backyard looking out their window at the back of a facing apartment who seemed to be looking to see what was going on, as well Does anyone know what this was? It went on for some minutes.

Fireworks for sure. Barkeley Center maybe..

I would've seen them from Barclay Center -- it's about eight blocks away with nothing very tall in between. Fireworks seems the most likely explanation, except why would anyone set off fireworks when it's 20 degrees out? Anyway.

Well, lookey here! Bet this was it:

Fireworks on Ellis Island, which explains the echo effect -- it sounded like it was coming from both east and west. There's a Blue Angels flyover tomorrow (the 13th)
