Muddy Waters back from the dead??!!??

Muddy Waters was open this morning! It looked like the same owner was in there working. Unbelievable! Anyone been in? I know many didn't like the place, but it is better than no coffee shop, so lets support them!

  • You're kidding.

All you people who talked trash about Muddy Waters: ON NOTICE.
  • Oh gawd, no. Never had a good cup of coffee here, and it was served with a heaping portion of nasty attitude, every time. Really can't believe it. PH Masochists, rejoice! :?
  • I also noticed that yesterday. I have to say, having peeked in, that I didn't think they were reopening. It seemed more like "Well, I'm here, the equipment is here, why not sell some coffee? Oh yeah, and it's 90+ degrees. Perfect!" I mean, Pieces has been using that space for sales and stuff...I think the owner just hasn't found a new tenant.
  • NNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Subject: hmmm?

Wow that's weird. I thought that she opened up another business somewhere else? I saw two women cleaning out some stuff a couple of days ago but it didn't look like it would be enough to put back a place that has been closed for so long. I was kina hoping that the space would be bought and used for something a little more interesting - like a Home Heating and Sooner Oil. Oh well.
  • Too funny: I was taking a cab back from work last night and my driver was like, "Park Place and Vanderbilt? I used to live above that coffee shop. The lady was so nice sometimes and so mean other times. She just made one too many people angry."

The coffee shop had been around, though, since sometime in the mid-90s.

Anyway, I'll still never go in there again.
  • Interesting tidbit: My husband was sitting on the bench one morning last week (or maybe the week before) and some guy came and slapped an eviction notice on th gate. Huh.

I'm definitely going to get coffee there, she makes a mean soy latte. I'm really happy it's back.
  • Isa has the dissenting opinion. That is so PUNK.
  • i was really hoping for a little bookstore.
or a bakery to buy cupcakes and bread.
    :(
  • How much would it cost to start up your own coffee biz a la Gorilla?
  • Subject: Muddy Waters' 'tude

the woman who owns that place is the snobbiest, most arrogant store-owner in the neighborhood....really sticks out in an area where everyone else is so pleasant to deal with. I'm going to get my iced beverages at the new coffeeshop on Flatbush next to Redberi -- the guy who owns it lives on Vanderbilt and couldn't be nicer, and the place -- unlike Muddy Waters -- has a welcoming vibe.

Yeah, it helps when you don't actively hate your customers. I went there once and only once. While the coffee was mediocre, what really kept me from coming back was the fact that she made me so uncomfortable. I bought a cup, sat down, intent on killing a few minutes till I met someone. I was one of three people there and she stared at me with this "are you done yet?" look the whole time like I was homeless or loitering or something. I almost said something but thought better of it as she seemed like the type to go postal and curse me down the block if I messed with her. I haven't missed her much.
  • The first time I went in there, I got my husband and I two lattes. My husband sat on the bench with our dog while I was inside. Ms. Happy was outside and snapped at my husband and said "you arent allowed to sit here unless you buy". My husband replied "my wife is getting us coffee". She sucked her teeth and went into the shop.

The second (and last time) I went in there, I got a skim latte. I walked home (only around the corner) and sipped and the milk was SOUR!! YUCK!

I threw it out and VOWED to never go back.

Like others mentioned, it could be such a cool place if the owner lightened up a bit... A damn shame.

i ran into the owner yesterday in another shop. she was talking about how muddy waters was still going on strong, and how she could be reached there.

...a few moments later, we walked past muddy waters itself, and of course it was dark, empty and locked up, looking like a hurracane had hit inside.

so who knows? whats up with that?

(...and as a side note, the shopping interaction i observed her in revealed her to indeed be a humongous bitch. i dont even know her, just saying... she seemed very obtuse and was acting like she was entitled to the world...)
  • my building owns the space that Muddy Waters is in, and believe me I have enough stories about Ntozake to fill many a web page. Her lease is aaaaaaaalllllmost up so her scary self will be moving on one way or the other. in the meantime if you haven't been insulted by this neighborhood legend you owe it to yourself to come on down and experience this bit of local history while you still can.

Personally speaking, I'd like to hear some of those stories.

lol, i was just thinking the same thing... i mean, if were gonna talk behind someone's back, we may as well make it worth it, eh? lets hear a juicy one...
  • she scare me one day. i never go back.

    Damn!
  • That was SUCH a tease.... damn.
  • 11238 wrote: That was SUCH a tease.... damn.
    totally.
  • Wasn't she featured in a Village Voice 'Shelter' article a few months ago?
  • Alright fine!

If "Queen of Pies" isn't willing to dish the dirt. I will, dagnabbit!

It was a dark and stormy night as I walked into Muddy Waters for a cup of coffee and to beg alms for for my invisible cat's sex change operation. I approached the counter, but no one was to be found. Hoping someone would be along soon, I waited, tapping my foot and worrying about poor Fluffy, waiting at home, trying to tie a corset with his stubby little paws.

Gradually, I became aware of low, insistent slurping noise coming from the back room. After a minute or two, my curiosity having overcome my politeness and timidity, I stepped up to the curtain, separating the back from the front room and pulled it back slightly to peek inside.

What I saw filled me with dark, wretched intestinal horror.

Rows of transsexual cats, idly smoking cigarettes and reading Vogue while little hoses ran from their nipples to containers marked "half & half", "whole milk" and "skim".

I ran, screaming from the shop. To this day I swear that some nights, as I walk by, I can hear the slow, soft sucking noises of cats being milked and under that, the evil purring chuckle of a completely batshit crazy coffee bitch.

    True story, folks. Swear it.
  • That sounds like a Simpsons episode- the one where the mobsters are selling rat milk for the school lunches.
  • It's true! I swear!
  • i think the city needs to check the water on Vanderbilt, muddy waters & that laundry place with dell(?), they are both rude.
  • Subject: Chocolate Monkey?

Has anyone ever been to the Chocolate Monkey on Flatbush and 7th? Does she scare people over there in her time off from Muddy Waters? According to Citysearch, she is "quality-conscious," and "meticulous about keeping things up to snuff".

I've never liked the look of it, so I stayed away. The place just doesn't look like you can kick back there, which is what I'm all about concerning bars.
