Muddy Waters back from the dead??!!??

Here's a Muddy Waters story for you -- a friend of mine who used to live in the neighborhood took in a dog from a shelter, loved him to bits, but realized she just couldn't keep him. So after a few weeks of dog ownership, she was able to find the pup a new home, with people who were happy to have him, and that she felt good about.
Now, she had gotten to know Ntozake through the dog, and insisted on going to Muddy Waters for an iced tea (it was summer) even though I already had a "no MW unless I'm totally caffeine deprived" rule. So we go in, and Ntozake asks after the dog, and my friend explains whay happened.
"oh, NO! That's so AWFUL!" she said.
"Yes," said my friend, "it's sad, but he's got a good new home."
"Oh, that's AWFUL! How could you DO that?! Oh, NO!"
"It was the right thing," I said, trying to get my already clearly distraught friend to leave.
"Oh, that's so AWFUL! Oh, NO! Not [dog's name]! I loved him!"
This went on until my friend was quite literally in tears. Which Ntozake did not notice, since she was so focused on the damn dog.
I finally swore off MW for good when I went in there for a regular coffee when I was totally caff-deprived. It was $1.50, and I only had a twenty and two quarters. "Well," she said in a snotty voice, "I don't have change."
So she would not make the sale.
At that point, I had been walking past her store every single day for FOUR YEARS, and had been an infrequent customer for the same length of time.
If she valued a single dollar more than a neighbor, she could have someone else's. -
That Chocolate Monkey place is also NEVER open and TOTALLY uninviting. The last time I walked by there, there was a Karioke (sp?) machine. I don't know, that kinda scared me.
P.S. Terrible story about the dog and your friend. Sucks that she brought your friend to tears. The no change thing is lame too. -
i had a friend who was shopping around to start a coffee shop and looked at muddy waters several months ago, after they closed. the owner was selling the biz, as is, for an obscene amount of money.
i guess no one was biting so she figured she should just make dime and reopened.
she also informed my friend that she was moving her business to chocolate monkey...not sure if she is part owner of that or was just combing business.
just some second hand gossip. -

so i see that her place is obviously closed... but i heard her say she was open to someone the other day... but i hear someone on here saying her lease is up... and the fact remains that her store is cluttered and obviously not open...

so whats the deal with muddy waters? is it actually open or closed? -
just out of curiosity... is she independently wealthy or something? how does a small business owner with such a reputation, and who is completely arbitrary about opening the store everyday, stay in business and support themselves?
seriously, because i might like to do that... this going to work everyday and having to kiss a little ass here and there really gets tiresome

I just came upon this board and this thread from a random google search. I never realized how infamous this woman is! (I've lived in the neighborhood for four years, and have had a variety of strange run-ins with her).
One time two of my friends bought coffee and went to sit outside on the bench. One of them went back inside to ask for a napkin..the owner refused to give her one and said that she had put some in the bag. She hadn't, and so my friend asked once more (after all, they had bought coffee *and* food). She again refused, and then came out from behind the counter, went outside, grabbed their bag and dumped it out. Still no napkins. They never got any (or went back). On a side note, I was getting chinese food on the upper west side the other night and she was in the restaurant. Strange. -
Subject: Open. ? .
Walked by on Sunday and it was open along with a little Stoop Sale-esque table set up in front selling one man's junk etc..
Walking to the subway this morning, I saw Muddy Waters flyers on some cars, I was tempted to take one off the windshield and read one to see what was going on, but was in a hurry. I'm new to the hood and haven't had any experiences with past incarnations, I'm only curious because it's just right around the corner from me... -
Ga! Die, MW, die! It's not even about the bad customer service anymore (legendary, btw) - At this point I just want her to vacate the spot so someone else can use it.
Queen of Pies - any updates on the murky future of Muddy Waters? Read me the tea leaves and tell me it's almost over! -
I read the flyer... same ole BS.... we are open blah blah blah...... I threw it away.

waaaay back in the day I lived in the Home Heating Oil buidling, and one of the things I was excited about upon moving in was a little coffee shop a couple doors down called the Hot Buttered Soul Coffee Bar. Which is an awesome name for a coffee joint, right?
So one sunday morning, I go in, order something, and making idle chitchat, I'm all, "so, you're a big Isaac Hayes fan, I guess?"
And she's like, "Isaac who?"
"Isaac Hayes? Mr. Hot Buttered Soul?"
"Never heard of him."
Dumbfounded. I think I was rendered mute until my coffee was ready and I left. I don't think I ever went back, and they went out of business, but word on the street was the owner was a relative of the landlord, and re-opened a couple doors down as Muddy Waters a couple years later... -

her days are numbered, I assure you. she has no more chance of having her lease renewed than a camel has of passing through the eye of a needle. Note to all future entrepreneurs: do not go out of your way to alienate every person who lives in the coop who owns your retail space.

There is almost no way that the Muddy Waters lady could be unaware if this board, or of what everyone says about her.
Isn't it interesting that she's never posted anything here to defend herself?
Or has she... :?:
   -
It's entirely possible she's unaware.
1. She's stupid.
2. The average person is still oblivious of message boards, newsgroups and anything that doesn't reside or link from the homepages of AOL, MSN, Yahoo.
3. She's average, stupid and kinda crazy. -
I've got a beautiful tin hat for ya, Carnie...

How about this?
1. She's stupid.
2. The average person is still oblivious of message boards, newsgroups and anything that doesn't reside or link from the homepages of AOL, MSN, Yahoo.
3. She's average, stupid and kinda crazy.
4. She may be venting her rage by posting under an alias and attacking everyone here without identifying herself.
Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean everyone isn't trying to get me! -
daveb wrote: It's entirely possible she's unaware.
but the truth is:
1. She's stupid.
2. The average person is still oblivious of message boards, newsgroups and anything that doesn't reside or link from the homepages of AOL, MSN, Yahoo.
3. She's average, stupid and kinda crazy.
1. She's weird but not at all stupid.
2. She spends hours a day on a wireless laptop when no one is in her store, which is most of the time.
so she may very well be reading my message right now; in fact she might even be me! -
 Now things are getting good...

t-fal what's the place called?
I remember Hot Buttered Soul. It is the same woman as the Muddy Waters woman. I saw her in there yesterday too. If you have never been insulted by her go now. We will be talking about her for years to come. the Chocolate Monkey gives me the creeps I keep thinking I'll go in but my feet won't let me.

its called bagels and high tea. its right between the president street 2 stop, and e. pkwy.

Subject: Muddy Waters
Two things about Muddy Waters stand out for me:
1) Her coffee smoothies (this amazing magic powder mixed with ice and milk and blended), which were unfortunately different each and every time, depending upon who made them and, if SHE made them, what kind of mood she was in. They went up and up in price, though, until they reached $5.16 with tax. So I bought a blender, and figured out how to make my own with ice, milk and Ghirardelli hot cocoa mix. Oh, and she tried to sell the powder she used to make them for $10 a pound!
2) A ridiculous conversation: The first or second Park Slope Reader (before it acknowledged the existence of PH) did an informal survey to rate pizzerias in Park Slope. I picked up my copy there and saw the results while I was waiting for my coffee. I mentioned that they had naturally ignored Four Seasons (which was in the space where Amorina is now). She asked, "What's that?" I told her, "That's the pizza place across the street." She looked at me as if I were an alien and I asked her if she liked pizza. "Oh, no, I NEVER eat carbs." " I mentioned that my family is vegetarian and that my son would have a hard time with that. She actually sneered and said to me, "I hope he's not overweight when he's older because of the way you feed him."
I never went back. -
I cant help but wonder if shes somehow related to Della from the laundrymat across the street who always yells at everyone.
-
This is hilarious ...
The woman is truly becoming an urban legend. And the Elvis-like sightings !!

She might be more closely related to el chupacabre. -
sorta just being a devil's advocate here, as she has annoyed me too, but...
why can't those of you who have been scared away realize that dealing with crazy people once in a while is part of the pleasure of living in NYC, and embrace this lady in all her glorious freakiness?? we should think of ourselves as lucky to have such a character right in our neighborhood - does it take a role in a seinfeld episode (soup nazi) to appreciate her with some humor? if you want a predictable coffee experience, go to starbucks! better yet, move to japan, where you will get bowed to with every coffee, but may die of boredom. if you want to enjoy the constant suprises NYC offers, go to muddy waters! i am quite serious.
she causes no harm, the coffee isnt that bad, the muffins are great, and the location is perfect - i want muddy waters to stay. and she actually can be quite nice, if you are careful. a couple of times when she hasnt had change, she has happily let me pay next time, even though i'm not there all that often. -

But this thread is exactly that-- a celebration of her! It's like telling ghost stories around the campfire.

yeeeeeah. cause, you know, our lives are so boring we just gotta spice em up by purposefully interacting with one of the neighborhood crazies...?
to each their own, i guess, but im never *that* bored. -
ok, but go back, so you have more stories to tell!!!

I'm sure I'll miss her when she's finally gone...and I'm looking forward to it. Telling Muddy's war stories is fun, seeing neighborhood residents get verbally abused week in and week out is not.
