Deacon Blue
So, out walking the dog just now I see that the new restaurant on the corner of Prospect and Grand, Deacon Blue, has some activity. I peek in and before I get 10ft away I am called back to inspect the premises by one of the partners, Santos, a thoroughly warm, charming and engaging fellow. The place looks great, intimate - ok, small - nice decor, and open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, 7.30am - 9pm, approx. Call me a pushover but I'm rooting for them! And yes, Steely Dan.

YAY! Thanks for the news!
Did you get a peek at the menu or any other sort of hint as to what kind of food they're going to serve? -
Oh, yeah and it won't officially open until some time next week. whoops, sorry for leaving that out! I think the guys are Brazilian. As far as food and vibe go I'm thinking it's gonna be more upscale diner, with Seu Jorge blasting. I was told there would be an emphasis on (good) music.

My wife and I spoke with Santos last week - he's a really nice guy and I get the impression that he'll work hard to make sure things get done right. We talked about sending customers to each other - he insisted that we come back to eat there (we talked shortly after closing time) and then recommend the place only if we thought highly enough of it. That shows some confidence in his product, I think. He said that the menu would be changing, but he gave us the daily menu so we could get an idea of the type of food. Burgers, fries, eggs benedict, waffles, fish and chips, fish and grits, chicken, some pasta dishes, etc. nothing too out of the ordinary, but rather stuff that you can/do eat on a semi-regular basis.
-
Great! Because I think we need a place that has everyday food. Can't wait to try it, and thanks for the tip!
-
I am very excited... its right on my way home from the 2 train. Do you know what the prices are like?
-
i know (because it was posted in my building) that the price for their labor day sneak preview was $12 for brunch -- i think there were 3 or 4 choices (eggs benedict, waffles, something else), and that the price included juice and coffee.
-
thats great prices!! Affordable!! Thanks!!
-
My husband walked by today, and they're open... just wanted to alert the troops... always nice to have a new restaurant in the area, and the owner seems so nice
-
Just finished having dinner at Deacon Blue with my roomie!! The food was great!! Dinner for two approx $20 at a sit down restaurant fits right in my budget...
Pros:
- owners are nice
-waitstaff is cool
- atmosphere is soothing... I love the couch and candles
- food was great...
-clean
- TV is tuned into VH1 Soul!!
Cons:
-BYOB for now... the are hoping that they will get the Liq License in a few month
-some stuff is priced a bit too expensive... Turkey Burger for $8 seems excessive... I pay $5 in Manhattan but...
The are open Tuesday- Sunday (T-F 8am- 9:30 & S-S 10am-10:30pm). I hope when they get their license they will be open later...
Oh my roomie had the fish and chips and I had the pork chops with the bomb sweet potato puree... I am definitely going back for more...
And they deliver too!! Or they will be soon actually... they have a seperate delivery menu.
I don't have to go to Vanderbilt to eat all the time anymore!! Yea!!
My roomie and I reccomend this place!!

how does the TV fit in? that sounds kind of annoying....
but everything else sounds good -- thanks for the update! -
Cool, thanks for the report! I can't wait to check this place out.
And I love the new Nina Simone avatar.

well... you can't hear it... the volume isn't up. And its behind the counter... so I guess during the World Series or something... it will be a convienet place to watch the game... i dunno thought it was cool
but everything else sounds good -- thanks for the update!
and sometimes... when I am on a date... and I am bored... I need a distraction... lol
Thanks Chris, I was reminising listening to the Fugees and remebered how much i loved that lyric... -
Checked this place out yesterday, already looked like there was a bit of a crowd inside. The menu looks nice -- classy food at pretty affordable prices, and the atmosphere inside looks simple but nice. The menu's posted on the door if anyone's interested, and the breakfast looks especially great -- there was a classic eggs/potatoes/toast plate for something like $3 or $4.
Finally, a reason to travel to Grand Street other than the 24-hour laundromat! -
Subject: new to the area...24 hour laundromat?
where's that? where do most people do their laundry at? -

there's a 24 hour laundry place on grand between prospect & st. marks. -
I'm glad that someone has stopped by. Everytime I walk by, the place is empty and the manager/owner is all by himself.
We definitely want to try it out, but we've been good about cooking more at home and saving $. Though the prices looked out of this world. Seriously, the menu showed salmon entree for $10. I can't do that cheaper at home. -
I just finally made it in there this morning for brunch -- had a great meal and it was super-cheap! I had eggs and the rosemary potatoes with toast and bacon and my brunch companion had the French toast, and with coffee for both of us it was only $15! It was very tasty and the staff was really nice. Can't wait to go back and check out the dinner options sometime.
I do wonder how long they can play Steely Dan before they get sick of it, though.

My husband had takeout last night, and he was very impressed. He's a big and picky eater. Also confirmed that Santos is a super nice guy. Am happy to support a local business that also serves good food! (As much as I appreciate Shane, I just don't dig the food).
-
FYI -- tried to go back for dinner tonight. They were closed and there was a sign saying the owners had had a death in the family and that they'll be reopening in a couple of days.

Made it by for dinner last night. Overall I think it was great. There were a few bumps. The waitstaff changed after we ordered and the food came out of the kitchen in the wrong order. We were seated and ordered before either of the other two tables, but they both got their food before we did. However, everything was fresh and good. The two of us ate for less than $30 and that included appetizer and desert.
Spouse was all concerned because the interior is red and not blue. "Why is Deacon Blue? It should be Deacon Red? Did they get a discount on red paint? Where is the blue?" -
I made it! I had a leisurely breakfast this morning. Great french toast, huge mug of steaming coffee. I was sad to be the only customer.
To the previous poster, Deacon Blue references an album title, am I right? Someone said that somewhere else. And anyway, don't you think that red is such a cheerier color for the inside of a cafe?
Everyone should patronize this place, because it's such a great addition to the neighborhood. -
I'm definitely going to try to head over there sometime this week - it looks awesome. glad to hear so many good reviews.

I was fine with it. When I think blue interior I think late night jazz (thank you Blue Note), which doesn't quite work with breakfast or lunch. Spouse is just far more anal than I about these things. -
gotcha.
I'm a warm color girl. My living room is orange, the bedroom is yellow. -
Subject: We LOVE Deacon Blue... GO!
My husband and I are such fans of Deacon Blue that I am making my first ever blog post.
We just came back from our third visit to this new restaurant on the corner of Grand and Prospect. The food is very good.... they are still figuring out their menu but I can recommend their sweet potato fries and the pork chop. I didn't love the eggs at brunch but i am way picky about eggs... i want to try the french toast. The coffee is terrific and they seem to have a nice "hot drink menu".
The owners really are lovely people. Santos is great as other people have noted but his wife (and the co-owner) Marcia (pronounced Mar-see-ya) is also totally delightful. The food is mostly appropriately priced and the service (although not as speedy as some might like) is friendly and makes you feel totally at home. I think the lack of speed in food preparation speaks to how fresh everything is. Oh and ask about any daily specials... i had a fabulous bbq chicken last time i was there that wasn't on the menu.
Check it out. I want these wonderful people to stay in business. We are pretty new to the area and they make us feel totally at home and extremely welcome. -
FYI - I picked up a take-out menu for Deacon Blue from my building's lobby this morning and it's got actual quotes from Daily Heights users that were left on the board!

Guess that means they're reading us. Hi, Deacon Blue folks! -
what did it say?

don't have time to transcribe the whole thing, but quotes one person who "just finished having dinner at Deacon blue with my roomie!!!..." and another who says, "finally another reason to travel to Grand..."
Plus there's a callout to "read more ... at dailyheights.com" -
my boyfriend was passed one of the delivery menus while walking our dog on Prospect Pl, so i felt inspired to order.......
OMG! I was not disappointed. We had the most delicious burgers EVER!
....and such totally impeccable service as well. Great addition to the nabe.
THANK YOU DEACON BLUE!
Howdy, Stranger!
