How about an assault on poverty and hunger? How about a petition about smaller class sizes? ...a decent living wage for rookie officers?

All this energy could be put to better use.
Yeah so, save your own world the way you choose. I'm glad that there are folks out there who are making an issue of this. How about getting initiatives and referendums in New York State? No one seems to care about this but it's the best way to actually have a say in your government and bring about change!
  • qtrain wrote: [quote=jayce]But firefighters leave their home every day kissing their partners and children goodbye with a pretty reasonable likelihood that they could get hurt or killed.
As do our city's taxi drivers, truck drivers, construction workers, and garbagemen (all who have higher job fatality rates).

Shit, I would be more scared of dying on the job if I was a pilot than a police officer. I'd be curious to see statistics on mortality and personal injury.

In terms of burnout and on the job stress, cops sure ain't no IT guys  . http://www.wytv.com/news/health/2788381.html

So that allows them to park like an asshole?

Maybe the FDNY and the NYPD can use that in their recruitment ads, "JOIN THE FDNY/NYPD, YOU CAN PARK LIKE AN ASSHOLE ANYWHERE! AND YOU CAN EVEN GIVE THE PERMIT TO YOUR WIFE SO SHE CAN DO THE SAME!"

    Give me a break.
  • I didn't say a word about parking. I'm just saying that there ought to be a little more respect here for firefighters.

its actually kind of astounding that you all can't see that.
  • This is like watching a car crash at the Indy 500...
  • buckle you seatbelt :D
  • The real fun is going to be all the post you get from people who are being threatened by cops and firefighters for taking pictures of thier illegally parked cars.
  • jayce wrote: I'm just saying that there ought to be a little more respect here for firefighters.
I think that there's plenty of respect here for firefighters that don't try and cash in on perceived karma by taking liberties not afforded to others.
jayce wrote: I didn't say a word about parking ... its actually kind of astounding that you all can't see that.
That should tell you something - that you haven't done a great job of getting your message across. Sorry bud.

most people here actually haven't disrespected fire fighters. we're merely asking that they wait in line and obey parking rules just like the rest of us.

To connect public workers' heroism with being able to park on the sidewalk is a joke. To imply that taking issue with said parking abuse is tantamount to disrespecting our heroes, give me a break.

If there are particular comments you take issue with, be my guest. but your post above implied that there's rampant disrespect of firefighters in this post and that's simply not true.

I have all the respect in the world for cops but when they double park outside Kum Kau on Myrtle Ave turning it into a one-lane road, it pisses me off as much as when anyone else does it.
  • I just think its amusing that people get all bent out of shape over waiting a few minutes more for a bagel when these guys think nothing of running into a burning building for people. They'd do it for any person on this board. So is it worth getting your panties in a wad over another 2 minutes for a bagel? If so, hey, thats cool. I have a lot of other things to be pissed off about. The extra 2 minutes really isn't all that much.

People on this board crack me the heck up. You all seem so angry all the time. Always someone else to hate on. Today is bagel-line-cutting-9/11-firefighters. yesterday it was park slope mommies.

so go on ahead and get all worked up that a 9/11 firefighter jumped the line. or parked on a sidewalk. just like you get worked up over someone leaving a pile of dog crap, or whatever else it is. maybe it makes you all feel better. have at it. I'll leave it alone now.

They had a fire engine double parked on a street with only two lanes of traffic, which, last time I checked, is illegal--especially for an extended amount of time, not to mention dangerous. And the line was out the door--about a fifteen minute wait not counting line cutting. But I thank you for your concern regarding my panties, which are very cute and quite well situated. I mean, really...would you like me to continue adding details or can we all just conclude these guys were just sort of being inconsiderate jerks? And that these inconsiderate jerks just happened to be firefighters. How that extends onto every other firefighter employed within NYC - you got me on that one.

This talking about getting "worked up" is certainly the pot calling the kettle black (no racist connotations here--wouldn't want to add another layer onto this ridiculousness)--I see plenty of angry posts with your name attached, too.

Pardon me, I'm off to put glue in the wheels of all the strollers at the tea lounge and strategically plant dog crap in high foot traffic areas (+5 points if some runny nosed white kid with a indie band t-shirt and $60 shoes steps in it). I love this neighborhood.
  • I can't hate on FDNY... not just because they selflessly save lives (and should be paid like movie stars) but because the Brooklyn ones I've seen are freaking HOT. There was some smoke in the building next to me and two firetrucks came. I had to walk past these guys and they were THE HOTTEST REAL LIFE MEN I HAVE SEEN. Good bodies, smiling faces, exuding friendliness. Young or old and grey: freaking hot. Do you hear me? Even the old guys were HOT! Outrageous. I was blushing so hard walking by these guys, they were that good looking.

Now these are the type of stories we should be talking about when we mention FDNY. :-)

Cops? While they have come to my rescue in the past, are not so hot. Sorry dudes. :-)
  • Firefighters and Police are given parking permits to park in the immediate vicinity of Precincts and Firehouses. The area near Bergen st and 6 ave is highly congested, making parking difficult for all parties concerned. Thats why on Sunday theres a row of doubled parked vehicles extending all the way to Carlton ave. The majority of those vehicles, belonging to church goers. Not only is that illegal, but it is also extremely dangerous for the responding firefighters to navigate through double parked vehicles in an effort to make it to emergencies quickly. You will never see a summons on any of those vehicles, nor anyone outraged taking pictures for a illegal parking website.
  • WhyFi wrote: While I can sympathize, how does that translate in to breaking the rules made by the system that employees you? Further, while pay may start out bad, it certainly gets much better and retiring 20 years later is nothing to sneeze at...
It certainly gets much better? Do you even know what they get paid? I don't think you do.

Suffolk County top pay is $94,417
    Nassau County...$92,432
    Port Authority...$80,720
    Westchester PD...$80,366
    MTA Police...$68,781
    NYPD...$59,588

Now I want you to realize that the pension is fixed. If a NYC police officer retires tomorrow, his pension would be roughly $30,000. There's a very good chance that he is in his mid 40's and has another 40 years to live. There may be a COLA raise but that isn't a guarantee. 40 years from now $30,000 will be nothing. The cop will retire at 45 after 20 years of service and half to get a new job anyway. If the state would guarentee those pensions after completing 20 years of service alot more cops would stay. There is a serious lack of senior, knowledgeable cops in this city. If one day after completing 20 years he gets fired then he loses his entire pension. There is no reason to stay.

Back to the original topic...Yes, some cops do park like a-holes. There is no excuse for parking in crosswalks or blocking somebody's driveway. There are many areas where the DOT has placed improper or inadequate signage. The DOT may put up a sign that simply states "NO PARKING" but they should have added the "police vehicle only" line. The city agreed to provide parking at police facilities in contract negotiations with the unions.

Has your car ever been vandalized because you are a CPA, a carpenter, a dog groomer? No, probably not. Personal cars are targeted all the time. The get their tires slashed, windows broken, doors keyed, mirrors broken, etc. Why? Simply because a guy in blue drives that car.

I've got no problem with how cops park around a station house. I do, however, get pissed off when I see a car parked on a hydrant with a PD plaque in the window while the guy is in the diner having dinner. Guy, find a legal spot.
  • ParadeRest wrote: new cops get paid approx $25,500/ann. before taxes. Cut that in half and knock off taxes and your down to what $8000? Now take out uniform expenses and your down to $5500. Break that into six months and you get $916. Minus health insurance and union dues and now your down to about $850 a month.
Which is why there will be no crackdown on police parking illegally. The pay is pretty bad so there has to be some other incentive to join the force. Think of it as a perk.

Actually, I worked in residential lending and, at my bank, I was responsible for programs extended to city employees - I worked with several cops, sanitation workers, firefighters, etc - yes, I do know how much they make, I've had to process their income statements. I've had several making more than $70k, how does that work if you're saying that the cap is $60k?

It's because of overtime. And since their pensions are based on their salary at the end of their careers including overtime, most cops do a ton of overtime for their last year or so, boosting their pensions way above the numbers ParadeRest mentioned above.
  • So as an agnostic when is my day that I can double park wherever I want?
  • Stephen Colbert wrote: Agnostic? Isn't that just an atheist without balls?
  • There is no guarentee that they'll make any more than 60k in a given year. If they are lucky enough to work 6 days a week every week for a year then sure they'll make more than 60. In many commands the admin. LT. and Integrity Control Officer closely monitor any overtime by cops nearing retirement. There have been several lawsuits brought against the ciy by cops because of age discrimination in the denial of overtime.

On St. Johns between Utica and Rochester there is a firehouse. There is also a church. On any Friday night there is double parking on both sides of St. John's by churchgoers. They also park on the sidewalk. This causes problems trying to get the rigs in and out but are tickets issued, no. It's called discretion and as soon as the cops can't park where they need to, neither will anybody else. It'll be open season on every car. Bus stops, hydrants, crosswalks, no standing, no stopping, no parking. The old,"can't you just give me a warning" will be out the window as will,"I'm just waiting for my friend to come out of the store."

Be careful what you wish for.
  • I haven't read any replies. this is bullshit. they should take the train like everyone else. if they can't find parking. or paid for parking like everyone else!

if anyone pulls any sort of bullshit about that, they are heros and other bullshit. they are being paid for doing a job. if they don't like the danger don't do the job.
  • 'Cause there are so many parking garages on Utica Ave.

Let's suppose that you got hired to be a flight attendant (or any other job that may be union) and a contract stipulation stated that the airline is responsible to provide parking at the airport. What would you do if you came to work everyday and your "guarenteed" parking was non-existent? I'm just wondering what everybody else on here would do if their contract was being violated. Guarenteed parking is a benefit just like health care and vacation days. The city promised it but doesn't provide it.

    Great site Oiseau.

I always thought it ironic that the area around the yards was designated "blighted" when its the precinct that creates a lawless, run-down, blighted atmosphere. No one should be above the law.
  • A friend of mine just informed me of this enormous Dodge Ram something or other that had been parked on the sidewalk at St. John's up near the Firehouse by Washington for 3 DAYS!!! Didn't move once. Then it left for a day, now it's back, parked on the sidewalk again.

    wtf?

There are lots of races who attend that event. In fact, both Catholics and Protestants like NASCAR.

But not hindus. Hindus hate NASCAR, or so I hear.

there's no logical connection between being heroic and double parking on a busy street while you get chinese food.
So is it worth getting your panties in a wad over another 2 minutes for a bagel? If so, hey, thats cool. I have a lot of other things to be pissed off about. The extra 2 minutes really isn't all that much.
people are just airing complaints. I wouldn't accuse anyone of getting their panties in a bunch (aside from the dude who made a website).
People on this board crack me the heck up. You all seem so angry all the time. Always someone else to hate on. Today is bagel-line-cutting-9/11-firefighters. yesterday it was park slope mommies.
A large majority of posts on this board aren't anger-filled at all.

again, it's just posting on a message board. it's just complaining. most of us aren't about to take out our aggressions on public servants.

if you don't think double parking and cutting off all traffic in one direction on Myrtle Avenue while you get chinese food isn't obnoxious, then i'd hate to see what you do think is obnoxoius.
  • OK, last time.

The issue was not with the double parking. Although you all seem to want to make it about the double parking. So just to cover that base... here...

    What is “double parking?”
Double parking is when the operator of a vehicle stands the vehicle on the roadway side of a vehicle that is stopped, standing, or parked at the curb.

Under what circumstances are commercial vehicles allowed to double park?

In most situations, a person may stand a commercial vehicle alongside a vehicle parked at the curb at such locations and during such hours that stopping, standing, or parking is not prohibited, while expeditiously making pickups, deliveries or service calls, provided that:

    there is no unoccupied parking space or designated loading zone on either side of the street within 100 feet that can be used for such standing, and;

provided that such standing is in compliance with the provisions of Section 1102 of the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law.
    from this website:
    http://home2.nyc.gov/html/dot/html/motorist/parktruck.html

and just to make sure... Here is section 1102

§ 1102. Obedience to police officers and flagpersons. No person shall
fail or refuse to comply with any lawful order or direction of any
police officer or flagperson or other person duly empowered to regulate
    traffic.
    from this website:
    http://law.onecle.com/new-york/vehicle-and-traffic/VAT01102_1102.html

So basically... double parking is not illegal.

Secondly, where do you think someone can just park a fire truck? Lastly, if a fire crew is on duty, they are required to leave the truck ready to go in the event of an emergency. So double parking for a fire truck is not only legal, it is the preference.

Again, my outrage was with the comment "when does the 9/11 privilege expire" in the context of bagel line waiting. You may not like that people are jumping the line. Fine. But I feel that wondering when 9/11 privileges expire is offensive. Matter of opinion here, it should seem. I am surprised a virtual room full of new yorkers aren't offended by such a statement. Did anyone here have anyone close to them die on that day? Is anyone still missing from this neighborhood? Or has the magnitude of that day been lost already?

So complain all you want about line jumpers and double parkers. But don't take so callously 9/11 heroism. Its not something you should ever make light of. Those were peoples husbands and wives and children. That privilege never expires. Not ever. Not so long as the survivors are hacking up their lungs from asbestos poisoning. Not so long as bones are still being found atop neighboring buildings. Not so long as there is a great big hole in the ground where we cannot even get a memorial completed. You may not like that it is used for bagel line cutting. And thats fine. Be thankful you had the "privilege" of not being down there that day.
